The idea of building to win is probably not dead. There are always people trying to win. But Stock/DSL-S seems both so concrete ("Nothing but HS and Popups.") and so hard to finish ("Those robots are too good, I'd never do well.") that some builders don't bother.
Those same builders have more fun with a meta if it's abstract, and they are happier if it's easy. The builders are then able to build more things and perhaps defeat less skilled or non-competitive builders. After that, some builders may build off the new information they learned and potentially be the best.

That FS is funky, you test it against HS? I'd guess people would play more stock if it didn't feel like HS/Popup spam to them. If only there was a way to show various kinds of robots in a fightable collection.

If you want GTM to grow (I think that would be good for you right now tbh), then GTM needs more things for people to do with RA2. When a website has more avenues for people, then more kinds of people show up, and their friends and counterparts will come along with them over time. We'd have plenty more tournament, showcases and other chit-chats if our new member numbers hadn't gone down for 5 years now.
I acknowledge that generating activity is hard. Look at the Challenge Belt. For many eligible builders, entry into the contest required trying new things. Not entering the event is somewhat excusable, because that "new" thing was another playstyle, but the turnout is still a bit embarrassing and an example of something that would've gone better on a larger site. Also, BOTM sure seems smaller now that only 2 to 4 people enter per month. However, given time and a chance, GTM can get big enough to prevent that from happening.

The only way it would look better (imo) is if you replaced the real robot's sponsors with RA2 stuff like the old Infogrames logo.

By my quick count it has 46 irons, 4 razors to protect the weapon racks, 4 icepicks for stability, DSA 4 pinks, and really high up HPZs. Generic LW Popup with 3 razors and DSA. 9HS with DSA. I also fell for the weapon breaker meme, lmao. Big ramming rack, 4 razors, 2 supervolts. It's armored with DSA. 36 Maces, but they're colorful. So it's not generic?
