no offense intended to anyone but it does seem like a little bit of a personal attack to LRA2 by you Naryar?, your making the most one of the most popular DSL AI Pack for this current time and if he is asking for help to do the same dont you think that's somebody looking up to you ? or admiring your work so much they want to do it them selves?

Im not taking sides here but I do think we should all get along, the only rivalries on here should be the friendly competition kind :-D

I think Naryar is frustrated.  LiferobotArena hasn't slowed down since signed in. He hasn't taken alot of the advice seriously thus far, when we told him to slow down and gracefully learn more about the game before hosting a tourney. While I do admire his ambition, he does not know what he is getting into, and has not expressed the desire to know what he is getting into. He just wants us to teach him all this stuff NOW. Naryar sees that as a waste of time, because most of us here know how overwhelming it is to learn AI code and tourney stuff, and really, he is right.  Its one thing to teach someone that proves that they are really into the game and can accomplish great things right off the bat (Tankcat comes to mind) But its another thing to try to support someone that does not slow down and soak in the initial stuff that he was taught in the first place... Look at how much his showcase has progressed... He has not taken serious the beginner concepts of the game first, how is he going to handle doing a complex Tourney if he does not understand the basics efficiently first?

LifeRobotArena... I commend your willingness and enthusiasm...
but slow the heck down!

Well, I'm kind of in between at this point. I graduated high school in May, but I want to pay tuition to go back to the vo-tech in our district for my 2nd year of graphic arts. Then after that, go to a local community college.

Thanks for the tip!

You are welcome.  If you have a friend that is in school, that works too... they are pretty lenient about it.  I had a friend that was not in college get the EDU version by having his college enrolled friend buy it.  It's not a hard system to circumvent really.

Hey Andrew...

Adobe offers huge discounts for qualifying students and teachers.  They offer most of their products under education licences.  You might qualify. I trust you are still in school?

Go to adobes website:   ADOBE EDU DISCOUNT SITE

Thats your best bet, good luck.

Chatterbox / Anybody skateboard, BMX, or pro scooter?
« on: June 16, 2009, 05:48:40 PM »
Wow... o.k. gather around kids, I'm gonna show my age.

I skateboarded back in the day. And back then Tony Hawk was still insanely popular in his late teens.  Skateboard wheels were sold in a variety of sizes for different applications, and boards were not commonly symmetrical for trick riding that you do.  I had a Tony Hawk downhill board, a set of T-Bones wheels by Powell Peralta, Indepentent trucks, I was also lame enough to screw some Schmidt Stixx on my board (those were plastic rails that you could put on the bottom of your board for slicker/faster railslides) . I could easily get the board going about 40/50 mph on a clean paved road downhill. Damn, what a rush. I lost interest when I narrowly missed a school bus, crash landed and shaved a ton of my elbow off. (pads were not really common back then either).

Don't get me started on how stupid scooters were back in the 80's... You guys have it made now.

Edit:

ooooooh *drool* Datsun Z

Is that a 280?  I absolutely adore the old Slot Mag rims of that style. Excellent choice!  I have an RX7.  Rear Wheel drive cars like that are a blast to drive.  Congrats Mike!

so what do they have to do with canada?

Something Mysterious... I'm not entirely sure.  There was a time when I was selling a bunch of Monkees merchandise (lunch boxes, signed pics, art, etc) for a collectibles company that I worked for around 1999/2001.  I sold appx 20 to 30 items and all of them went to various addresses in Canada.

Rumor has it, the band was really popular in Canada... I speculate that they still are.

Robo could probably shed light on this... but... uhhh... I don't think he's gonna budge.

Can't blame them Canucks though... not much musical excellency has come from the frozen tundra.  Though, the Barenaked Ladies are pretty awesome.

We do not speak of The Monkees.

Ever.

Lies!

I've been selling stuff on ebay for 10 years... Anything Monkee related always ends up being shipped to Canada.

Any anything karaoke related ends up being shipped to Japan... go figure.

Yeah, Spyguy is a 85 year old pervert. :D

Summer '07 for me as well. I was on a hiatus for a while because my life got insanely complicated for some time.  It still is pretty complex, but i can build a bot every now and then.

I'm really glad that psycolone does not have the avatar of the kid eating cereal anymore... Dang... seeing that animated gif was creepy and transfixing in a weird way.

I sold most of my battlbots toys on ebay a few years ago... I think I still have my RC Battlebots in the closet though.  My wifey got me a Biohazard Keychain back during the shows second season, and it still survives on my keyring today.  Tough little thing, has a working arm and everything. All the stickers are worn off, but it still functions like a champ!

Goes to show... that bot was built pretty solid :P

Hey man, that's pretty cool! There are many more things that you can learn to advance your building skills, but you have already mastered the key element:  "Just have fun."

Stick around... hey, make a showcase. Your positive attitude is nice to have around. We can give you feedback on your bots (sometimes it's going to be painful... like fraternal hazing... but its only because we want you to join the ranks.)

good luck! keep playing.

Discussion / How Much Does a Hard Copy of RA2 Go For These Days?

I have a hard copy, anyway, but I am wondering how much it would cost me if I hadn't bought it for like $10 back in the day.

Y'know... aside from Guild Wars... this game has been the best bang for the buck I have ever spent. (about $5 on ebay) I would say that any price under 10 bucks is worth it for this kind of building fun and community to boot.

Thanks for the link! Wow, the similarities are uncanny. Well, I suppose when you have built as many bots as Naryar... these duplicates are inevitable.  Sorry if you feel copied Naryar.

I totally understand what Naryar means by this design being unstable. When i first made it, it would not stay on the wheels at all. It would flip over like crazy. After some tweaking... making it 4 wheel drive helped, and adding the tail was the clincher.  Now it sticks to the ground, and simply wont flip over.

What is the best way to test the effectiveness of a SHW bot in DSL?  Are any of the AI bots SHW in this pack at all?

Thanks for your comments... more bots to come.

I like the tail. What kind of armor does it have?

1mm Aluminum... I am also working on trying to put a sheet of metal under the bot to protect it, but the extenders go a little too far and hit the ground. Still trying though.

Naryar... what does it remind you of? Did i manage to clone a bot without actually seeing it?

This is my first effective DSL bot... It is tough to say how effective it is though, because I can't seem to find any SHW bots in DSL (if any exist) This will most likely be my Clash Cubes entry unless I can design something that does more damage.  I will probably work on a HW version of it next... and see how it fares against other HW bots in the pack.

Any feedback is appreciated. I have stuck to the realistic rule as best as I could.  I have not skinned the bot yet... I might tweak it or shoot for a smaller chassis, but it is so stable as-is I really like driving this one.

Edit: 13th warrior has now been renamed Lament Configuration for the clash cubes tourney.  I will post a pic of the skin soon.

I appreciate having you veterans kicking around. Can we all gather around the campfire and you can tell us bot stories?

Stick to these forums, we all have a pretty good time still. This game is certainly not dead by any stretch of imagination, and heck, it is still evolving as we speak.

Even though I never met you before, welcome back.
