Stock Showcases / Re: R0B0SH4RK Stock Showcase
« on: August 29, 2010, 11:41:17 AM »
Cool design. As mentioned previously, it looks like it would fall over as soon as it makes contact with the opponent. If this is a problem, I would try downgrading the weapon motors (not sure how much this would help) and adding some castor armor to the paper thin wall (in the hopes of it doing better against HSers). Does the bot remain stable after one of the blades fall off?

Your starting to become one of my favorite builders here. Not only did you use my glitch but a majority of your recent bots have been original/innovative in some way.

All the stock wheels have 1 grip and 400HP (the default for wheels). The only difference, besides the obvious size and weight, is that shinies and minis don't have .2 resistance (they have .12 and .1).

I would upgrade the wheels with the extra weight. If resistance is related to turning (as stated on the beetlebros site) then having nearly anything else would be beneficial.

Other Tutorials / Re: DSL Install Instructions

Depending on what you checked during the WinRAR installation, you may not have the extract options when you right-click. In that case, you would need to click Open (or double-click the icon) and manually select WinRAR from the list (you can associate WinRAR to .rar files to skip this step). When the WinRAR window appears, all you have to do is click the Extract button and select the destination.

Discussion / Re: Multi-Bot A.I Question
« on: August 23, 2010, 08:01:00 PM »
The AI that Mad and Pys just kept Pys's bot away from Mad's bot. Originally, I was working on the AI that they were going to use but due to time restraints, we were forced to use the Mad's less powerful AI.py. My original coding could potentially be altered for your purposes but I don't think Mad's would work at all. I've got both his and my unfinished python (I stopped working on it when we switched to his python) somewhere on my hard drive so I've got a pretty good idea of their differences.

Didn't Click make an Evasion tactic? My AI.py (for Pys's popup) works by switching between my own evasion tactic (which takes into account the heading of all the opponents before weighting them depending on distance) and the Engage tactic when the closest bot has its back turned. I'm sure if you ask politely, Click will give you his evasion tactic (if its finished). Then either I or someone else can make some sort of switcher depending on the heading of the closest bot. I don't have enough time to work on this until the weekend but maybe someone else has time before then.

Off-Topic Discussion / Re: RA2 ALMOST works on Ubuntu
« on: August 20, 2010, 09:22:18 PM »
I dual boot with Ubuntu and Windows 7 on my laptop. I prefer the speed and customization of Linux over Windows.

It would be really cool if RA2 worked in Ubuntu so that I didn't have to load up Windows all the time. Whenever I load RA2 in wine, it always has to switch the number of "Users" to 0 (which doesn't make any sense to me) before it will get stuck in the main menu. Wine doesn't appear to be translating the system mouse's direct input correctly.

Discussion / Re: Stacking outside the chassis
« on: August 15, 2010, 01:10:46 PM »
Just like normal stacking, exostacking doesn't work for all components and usually only works with certain placements. Even with an excellent stacking ability, its still not easy (possible?) to make an entire side invincible with stock components (besides the baseplate). Invincible armor has been considered fair for stock in the past so I don't see any reason to change it. DSL is all about realism so NARmour and exostacking should not be considered fair. IRL components that stick out will take damage regardless of what they are connected to but since RA2 makes baseplate components invincible, it needs to be restricted.

I'm away from my main computer so I can't test but it looks like you have a problem at line 29. It needs 8 spaces instead 4 before 'self.canFire'.

When I first showcased a bot using this glitch on the old forums, Pysclone said he had managed to get a control board completely out of the chassis.

I use this glitch quite a bit. I've had the most luck with baseplate anchors but I'm aware of it being possible for axle mounts and control boards (the most that I've gotten is only about a third of the way out).

Discussion / Re: Your UI?
« on: August 12, 2010, 12:31:23 AM »
I keep a list of the dimensions for all the stock components. I've also added a few unfinished guides for the sliders (the height ruler is the only one that I've finished/released). The rest of my UI isn't all that impressive (for the most part, its just an abstract background).

Modifications / Re: In need of an arena.
« on: August 09, 2010, 12:56:42 PM »
I've been done with the Arena.py for quite awhile (it just needs a few touch ups after the Arena.gmf is made). The only reason why I haven't said anything is because I'm still waiting for Mad to give me the go-ahead (although, Joe might have gotten it...).

Features of my Arena.py:
  • AI won't attack caged bots
  • Caged bots won't move unless they are being counted out (if you would like, I could also stop them from rotating their weapons)
  • If there is only 1 non-caged bot, the next available caged bot is released without a delay.
  • As time progresses, the cages are consecutively opened (30sec and 1min after the fight begins)
I'm still in favor of turning this into a group project but if it makes things easier for everyone else, I could start on the Arena.gmf and skinning...

In general, the problems that most people experience (when trying to play online) are the result of their router or their firewall conflicting with RA2.

I get that sometimes... I usually see it when there is a problem with one of my components. You would still get this error message regardless of whether or not the CD is in the CD-ROM drive.

To fix it, all you have to do is remove the problematic component from your game (or reinstall).

anyone feel the forum is missing something? i do and it got me thinking...

1. An RA2 weekly(?) wrap-up, a video that covers all happenings for the past week in tournaments, showcases and discussions. people could use this weekly video magazine to promote tournaments and/or get their bots recognized.

2. A yearly All-stars tournament, BBEANS happens roughly every year so what if we had a yearly all-star tournament featuring the 10 best robots in the lw, mw and hw weight classes from both stock and dsl versions of the game (60 robots). The best 10 could be decided on by the veterans etc. and pulled from showcases and/or tournaments from that past year.
A complete overview of the week is a neat idea but it might be more work than its worth. Making a special video every week with stuff that gets submitted at irregular intervals is no easy task. It might be easier if we did it every 2-3 weeks.

I'm personally not too fond of the second idea. It would exclude too many people/bots and wouldn't have as much variety as a normal tournament.

Edit: Lets try not to stray too far off topic... Otherwise, posts will get deleted. *cough*Pysclone's*cough*avatar*cough*

Stock Showcases / Re: SKBT's Stock Showcase

Using one of the pointed sides rather than a flat side is better IMO. The razor's collision mesh sticks out further which potentially means that it is harder to hit what it is attached to (usually 100 HP extender). The text file specifies that it doesn't have normals so all sides should deal the same amount of damage regardless of how much contact is made (by that one razor).

The EXE prevents us from having more than 15 teams in the tournaments but some of us are using batch files to rotate the AI team numbers. I think philetbabe released something for this but Mad made the batch files that I use.

huh, I must have missed it on RFSHQ... or I got it and forgot about it... Either way, thanks dalesec7.

Her site contained several RA2 things (ranging from the Wheel Tutorial to custom components) that were later moved to GTM by ACAMS and Goose. They had been paying to keep her site up after her death but the site was falling apart without constant maintenance. Something that made her site different than the rest was that it had a virtual room filled with her RA2 components (for easy previewing).

Lu-tze made a chariot wheel but I don't know where you can find it. It used to be on her site but it was a broken link when I first joined but maybe someone else has it.
