Title: Apple's iPad
Post by: russian roulette on January 29, 2010, 08:24:58 PM
Is it the kindle/netbook/videogame/world changer? IMO not. For people who don't know what the iPad is then you may remember any rumors about a tablet computer coming to apple. Essentially it is a Ipod touch with a 9.8 inch screen, weighing in a 1.5 pounds or around 3/4 of a kilogram the iPad uses iPhone OS. With that being said, it is not a computer, it is a mobile device that once again sided with the worst 3G company in America :fail: . There is no Camera and no flash support making web browsing even more of a drag :fail: . It starts at a Apple version of a low price at 499 for 16 gigabytes, yes a computer that has 16 gigs is pretty pathetic :fail: . And 100 dollars extra for 32 and another 100 for 64. Add 130 dollars to any of these models then you can press your luck at finding the "good" 3G coverage that doesn't seem to exist with AT+T :fail: . Even worse there are no SD or USB slots in the device :fail: .The apps are more blurry and your thumbs hurt from pinch and zoom over load. If you want to get one, I say wait until the second or even better the third generation. The first generation iPad will be sold with AT+T starting in March. What do you think of the iPad?

If there is AT+T 3G support there, if not then he is SOL with any connection to the internet.

That would be an awesome upgrade for the Kindle, which is only $10 cheaper. But then, there's this:

Call me retarded, but I think it's a good concept. Most of computer users just browse the web right now, and a tablet with the iPhoneOS is a geat idea, as much as I hate closed platforms, I predict this will be quite a success. Also, the screen with it's multi-touch surface is a programmer's and designer's heaven, plus it's a dream to move on from the iPhone's API, since it's the same :D.
You can't argue, the iPhoneOS' MobileSafari.app is the best mobile browser there is.

I may get one if this gets jailbroken. As R1885 said, add a terminal and a VNC/RDesktop client and it's a sysadmin's most useful tool ever, apart a microwave for all those ramen noodles.

I gotta say... this product is very typical of Apple in a lot of ways.  They release a relatively cool product with glaring flaws or features missing.  Die-hard fans and trendsetters will flock to buy it. 6 Months from now, a new version will be released with a couple of new features that should have been present from the beginning.  Wash Rinse Repeat.

Apple is one of my favorite companies.  I was an Apple service tech for a few years and then worked sales for a few years as well. Apple introduced me to sushi which was nice.  But, the one thing that I have learned with Apple products over the years, is that never take the first version of a groundbreaking product seriously with them.  In about 1 or 2 years, the iPad will be revised and awesome.  Heh, now that I think about it... I still have Apples first digital camera in my bar dowstairs... I will have to take a picture of that thing and show it to you guys.  (classic stuff)

Edit: pics of Quicktake 100 ftw

I think Apple should stick to Ipods and itunes... There stuff looks good and seems super hi-tech but in reality the only thing special is that they over price all there stuff.I really don't like mac products because of all those reasons. And a big question I've aways had was why didn't Apple put in all those customizable features that you get from jail breaking your Ipod in the actual Ipod.

Why spend precious payroll money when hackers across the globe will do it for free?

Plus, If you let the online community "hack" your products you are not responsible to fix them under warranty when the product gets screwed up.  In the long run you end up selling more units because people mess up their ipods and its not technically Apples fault.

It is actually pretty savvy tech business practice... Nintendo has been doing it for a while too.

Problems with the chart posted by Mr. Somestrangeguy: iPad does allow for video and audio out. Also, that 1 GHz processor is much faster and more efficient than those from 2003.

No need to shriek. You probably don't even have much experience with Apple computers. I've been a Mac user since I got my PowerMac G3 six or seven years ago, and I assure you that their computers are top-notch. If I still had an external monitor and keyboard, I would still use my Mac Mini and G3 on a daily basis.

As for the iPad, I see a lot of potential with this thing, but do not yet see it as something I would buy. Some things that would change my mind include: Built in iSight, the iLife Suite, multiple processes, competitive apps in the app store (MS Word, Google Chrome, Firefox, etc).

I'm not trying to start an argument, but how do you know? If Apple products are good or bad depends on your point of view.

Because he used rhetoric instead of listing actual problems with the platform (such as the Mac build of Flash being a major resource hog).

I agree with him to a certain extent, but there's no reason why I can't run both a messenger and a browser at the same time (not with that processor).

The iPad looks cool, I would get one if I had the money.

What I wanna see is a jailbroken iPhoneOS on that, it would allow multitasking (like it already does on iPhones and iPods).
Ideally, we would see Mac OS X instead of iPhoneOS, but that's not going to happen, since porting Finder and the most common Mac Apps to another processor architecture (ARM instead of the usual PPC / x86) is a lot of work. I can't blame them for doing what they did. They get a lot of control over the devices, but it's a real shame for advanced users, let's not lie to ourselves - most people just want to use the web browser.

Comparing processor speeds is stupid. An x86 is a really crappy processor for mobile devices. It has a lot of boilerplate needed for compability with older (real mode) software, is a power hog, and it's mostly not fully used on most computers. More complex arithmetical operations only arrived in SMD extensions (starting with 3dnow! and MMX, then came SSE1 up to SSE4), which are mostly used in advanced apllications (graphics, video editing) and not in everyday use.
How well a device works depends on how good the programmers are. Check this out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EF3-U9Lb12k&feature=player_embedded# (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EF3-U9Lb12k&feature=player_embedded#) . See what you can do with an 8-bit microcontroller running at a 12 Mhz connected to a cheap touchscreen and 4 KILObytes of RAM.
ARMs are great CPUs for mobile devices. They offer various opcode modes for maximum cramming of code, they are light on battery AND on heat. An ARM running at 1Ghz is a MASSIVE, GARGANTUOUS  TON of power.

I currently have a tablet pc that uses AndroidOS. It is about the size of a PsP 3000 and is 200$ less than the iPad for 16 GB.

It has a lot less screen real estate. You should be comparing it to an iPod Touch, if anything.

Yes, keep on circlejerking. That's so mature.

A : "iPad is FAIL!!111 <funny images>" lack of arguments
B1: "yea lol trudat" people agree because they don't have a slightest clue
B2: "yea lol i agree lol"
B3: "dat is tru rofl ipad fails lol"

C : "yeye the iPad may be crappy atm but it has potential lol" reasonable arguments
B1: "yea lol trudat" ????

A : "haha ipad suck lololo FAIL OMG" ignoring previous arguments, repeating previous statements
B1: "yea lol trudat" people agree because they don't have a slightest clue and they don't care about any other logic than the one that lets them to go "FAIL" and "OMG APPLE IS TEH SUXXORZ"
B2: "yea lol i agree lol"
B3: "dat is tru rofl ipad fails lol"

It's all 30 GOTO 10 when you think about it. There is no discussion, only kids covering their ears yelling "LALALALALLA I DON'T HEAR YOU LALALALALALA". Or like a mob just wanting to vent out their anger on random people. Or like a bunch of mindless sheep following another person / idea.
