Well I made a copy, but then I overwrote the original when I put it in the folder .

You can always make a copy of the original skin, and then modify the copy.  Re-save the original skin under another name (like "originalbattery2.bmp"), and then rename your modified skin with the original skin's name.  Works well - i did that with my Sears DieHard battery skin.
