Title: High-Quality Stock Component Textures
Post by: Serge on November 02, 2008, 05:47:11 PM
I was bored. I had Photoshop opened. Should I make mroe of these?

I am also working on creating a higher-polygon model of the redbird.

Looks good. But just remember that higher quality could mean more liability to lagg or havoc. Depending on the computer.

how did you get such a big picture of them.

Resized the original, it is common practice to make original skins bigger to make them better....at the cost of load time and lag.

I would much rather be able to decompile/recompile the car steering

This is just a project I'm doing in the meantime. You know, rpogramming 24/7 makes your brain hurt.

That picture is big because it's a render from 3dsmax.

There's no way this can cause increased lag, unless you have a really old computer. Thrust me, textures used in your new FPS game are ten times bigger.

Neither will this make the game more prone to havok explosions - Havok calculates collision data by using the collision mesh only. The display mesh (including the texture) is only used to draw the part / object on screen.

For example, this texture went from 128 x 128 to 512 x 512.

The load time isn;t going to be enormous either. It may be a milisecond slower or so, but again, I am sure 99% of you have such powerful computers that you won't notice anything.

The texture wasn't just resized - I painted it from scratch.

Looks great, but I fear that with every component having a skin like that, the Components folder would get really big, really fast.  And my RA2 is already a bloated, out-of-control behemoth on my computer.

I think it would be cool to have more skins like this.

Mine too. it's at 2.4 gigs presently. I like the skins option, though.

Lightweights .......... I wonder if this would be a good place to mention that just the new textures and skinning stuff I've been playing with is over 62.8GB?  I got a lot of different things I've been trying out ....

Nice motor skin, Serge. I'd like to test these skins for lag...

Leave it to the Dermatologist himself to not forget his elephant size 'pack-a-derms', which 'heavyweights' should be brought out of their dungeons and put out on public display sometime...
