Title: Robot Wars:Arenas of Destruction
Post by: Badger on August 03, 2011, 03:16:28 PM
IMO, the best of all the official RW games. I also have a fun challenge, kill SirKillalot. It's easy if you use mortis, sotry somone else. ;)

I have a dl for it in my sig, as it is a dead game, like RA2. 400MB, no viruses, came straight from my disc (My 1st ever PC game, still have it. ;) )

Also, discuss any other points about the game, what you like, strength of bots, building tips ect.

I've got the PS2 version to this day, actually- still take it for a spin now and then.

Although my opinion on the reps tended to vary. Sometimes, they were reliable, and a joy to play with. Other times, I couldn't stand them.

The 4000c saws are insanely over powered, use with a lifting arm and Titanium or Kevlar armour (depending on your budget) for a relatively cheap way to pwn. Also the house robots AI is messed up on the Tokyo rooftop because they keep randomly attacking you, ruining the match :(.

What seems to be the problem?

If you can, try to start it in windowed mode, there will be a tutorial somwhere on the internets.

Provided it doesn't break down- which it does often. Very often. One particularly bad match I remember, both my weapons and one of my drive motors broke in the first minute after cursory contact with an opponent.

Wasn't tokyo in RW:ED?

And I fing rending spikes to be the most OP. I love the Firestorm type flipper.

I find it much better than Chaos 2. C2 flipper comes off in a instant whilst Bemoths flippers rarely comes off.

I disagree. Behmoth rarely flips OOTA, as opposed to Chaos 2. All the weapons in this game are insanely fragile.

I think the worst bot in the game is Mortis.

It was desroyed in 2 seconds. As soon as the match started it died.

It can happen to any rep- for one thing, I remember playing as Chaos 2, fighting Heavy Metal. Immediately charged in, flipped it over, and tossed it into Matilda's CPZ...

...and then my battery died. Three seconds.

On a Collateral Damage match with the Scragger, the first thing that JP said was: "Oh no, they seem to have broken down". They lasted one second. :/

I was just playing it, and when playing as Behemoth, I could not turn left or right after Timser and Hypno-Disc rammed me at each side and I got stuck in forwards and the while moving forward I pushed Timser who was in front to me in the pit as well as myself when getting stuck in forward drive, so Hypno-Disc won while Xmas Destruction was thrown OOTA and Behemoth and Timser were in the pit. I got the game 3 months ago after getting it off eBay.

Title: Re: Robot Wars:Arenas of Destruction

At some point I remember flipping Sgt. Bash out with Mortis.
Then there's the JOHN PIERCE cheat, where you get max budget if you type it in as a username.

Anyway, I built SnS by getting a low circular shaped bot, spamming spikes all over it and then spinning one the spot via the V stroke Engine with the low power differentials.

Best weapon is the lifting arm overall, I remember a certain Laurey Calvert (from the Lightning team) being rather good at flipping things OOTA with his bot he made.

And some how came after AoD

I have a dl for it in my sig, as it is a dead game,

Well the company that produced it is still active and running unlike RA2 so its debatable.. Ill let ACAMS have a look and decide if he is ok with it..

I don't know if I can believe this, but... can you 'unlock' the house robots in this game? I know you can in Robot Wars Extreme Destruction, but what about this game? Is "JPEARCE" the only cheat in the entire game? Please reply!

Yeah, pretty much. But you do unlock everything and receive 999,999 credits.

I just started playing through it again for Nostalgia, and I've got a pretty good bot, I reckon. 4WD wedge with a lifting arm on the front and a Pussycat saw on the back. I was seeded third for the Alpha Viking Open Tournament. =D

You can't unlock the house robots in AOD. You can in ED trough  some cheat code. (http://www.neoseeker.com/Games/cheats/PC/robotwars_extreme.html)

And utilising the JPEARCE cheat, I created two pretty awesome machines-

Thunderbolt 2
Weight Class: Heavyweight
Chassis- Low Classic Wedge
Locomotion- Medium Inner Foam-Filled (at back, done by equipping six, and deleting the two at the front)
Power- 5-Horsepower 4-stroke Petrol Engine
Drive- 4 Differential High Ratio motors
Weapons- 1 Cassius II flipper and 1 Lifting Scoop
Armour- Titanium, coloured black
Notes- Much faster and more manouverable than a standard 4-wheel drive robot, comparable to Chaos 2. Can self-right.

Napalm Death
Weight Class: Superheavy
Chassis- Low Block
Locomotion- Steel Caterpillar Tracks
Power- 5-Horsepower 4-stroke Petrol Engine
Drive- 6 Differential High Ratio motors
Weapons- 1 Flamethrower and 1 Torch Cutter, with two 15cm Ramming Spikes at front, and two stacked Triple Spikes at rear.
Armour- Titanium, coloured Bronze
Extras- 2 Insect Antennae arranged at sides of Flamethrower
Notes- Intended primarily as an improved version of Manic Volcanic, and as a House Robot-elimination design, with its insanely high attack power, weight, armour, pushing power and strength.
Low centre of gravity, and can self-right ala Maximillion with its tracks when tipped on its side.

Quote from: Wikipedia
The House Robots cannot be played, won, or bought by the player, but can be pitted-against them in a one-to-one training confrontation. The RefBot is not included in this largely series 4 based game, but appears in the game that succeeded Arenas of Destruction; Advanced Destruction. The House Robots cannot be played in this game, either, although 'cheats' have appeared in various gaming magazines, which, by pressing a certain button combination, allow the player the option to play as the House Robots. There were a number of gaming bugs, that were attributed to the House Robots, such as attacking before the player came to the Corner Patrol Zone, or randomly, particularly in the Japanese arena, attacking the player, with no referee to stop them. This often resulted in the player's match being compromised.

Thought I'd bring this topic back to life, with a video of the game. Although I've figured out how to mod this game, along with Robot Wars Extreme Destruction, it's extremely moddable. Here I increased the power of the house robots weapons. Afterwards, I realised I might have increased it just a little too much :baffled:

*BUMP*

Once again, I modded this game! This time, I made sure that the competitor robots will at all cost NEVER freely enter a corner patrol zone. Thanks to some tweaking in the global.dat, and local rwarenat.txt file, that tells the game what spots of the arena are "off-limits" for competitor robots.

Note: Yes, I did indeed change Hypno-Disc's flywheel's damaging capability from impacts and also it's cutting edge

With all respect, I wasn't actually planning on keeping it in high quality as it is only a GIF animation. These are just for fun, and works fine for me. I can record in higher quality, if need be.
Title: Re: Robot Wars:Arenas of Destruction

It's not just the quality, it's the gifs take up a ridiculous amount of bandwidth compared to videos. Your gif is 83mb; it's fine for me on a 300mb/s connection, it's not so much for people on data caps or very slow connections. There's a reason that gifs aren't used for anything over 10 seconds at the most.

That's a good point. I didn't think about that. For future GIF's, I'll set the recording to around 10 seconds. That's for the tip Badger, I will certainly remember that :)

So I started playing this on my PS2 emulator again and...jesus christ, I think the POWER SOURCE DISABLED immobilisation message is going to be ingrained into my sub-conscious. The only reason I can think of for having this dumb mechanic in the game is to try and balance the real life robots and something overpowered you created. It seems to happen at complete random.

It's not Robot Arena 2 by any means, but as a casual arcade style game, it's pretty fun, if you can get past the bullsh** power supply failures. It runs pretty much perfectly on my emulator, which is more than I can say for games like Everybody's Golf and Crash Nitro Kart.

I've never played ED, but honestly, it looks like the better game. I'm still perplexed as to why they never released it on PS2.

I also have as a goal to get Matilda with her chainsaw into Extreme Destruction, so far though it's not without crashing the game...

Just grabbing the *.rwm file (Robot Wars mesh) and putting it in the Extreme Destruction directory, replacing it, won't work.

Gonna try comparing the chainsaw with the flywheel with HxD and see what I can dig up. The chainsaw, the only thing that makes Arenas of Destruction better, in my opinion.

EDIT: The two *.rwm files are completely different in hex, no use trying to change byte after byte to any kind of byte and figure it out, as it's going to take more than a lifetime…

EDIT2: Changing the texture of the flywheel to the chainsaw's texture worked just fine... hmm… but that of course won't do... I want the chainsaw instead of the flywheel.

The Monstoco chainsaw from Extreme Destruction will do.

pahahah! how does it work? also wish they went for her flywheel in Extreme, There was a image of her with a bigger flywheel but they never put it in (https://d3isma7snj3lcx.cloudfront.net/optim/images/photos/00/00/20/02/ME0000200202_2__830_470.jpg)

Yeah! Weapons can be changed, but only to some degree. It doesn't seem to be possible to change to any weapons from Arenas of Destruction to Extreme Destruction or vice versa. Oh well...

How well did the chainsaw work?

Well, it works just fine. But the body of it is outside her shell, as shown in the previous image. Looks kind of exposed though. I still prefer Matilda with her chainsaw. She then looks like she was meant to look :)

I like her flywheel for her destructive power but for her chainsaw for aesthetics :P

Good point. Although I like her method for damage with the chainsaw better. Flip them, then slice the underneath of them, which is in many cases not protected. And as always, she's not alone. She's got at least (in the fourth wars and down) three more colleges ;)

I haven't even noticed! But now when you say it, yeah! They are! XD I could give that a try as well, we'll see what can happen if I switch them.

I would love to make Sir Killalot's claw bigger, but the models are in *.rwm format. When opened in HxD, it clearly reads "MSH", but I'm not sure if you can just rename the file extension to *.msh. I don't think that'll work...

Thinking about matilda can you move the placement of the chainsaw so the base of the chainsaw into her body?

I'm afraid I cannot do that, as It'll probably require me to edit the model itself. As said, it's a *.rwm. In hex, it says "MSH" at the beginning, no clue what to do about that really. Oh well...  :(

It's a great idea. Being able to modify the looks of the weapons. The models themselves seems exported into this *.rwm format I don't know a thing about... I really wish (I believe you're with me on this one) there was a modding toolkit of some sort to both Arenas of Destruction and Extreme Destruction.

I could always try to lookup *.msh though... see what that's all about...

Just wanted to say that I've found in hex in the "system.dat" file where the sound provider is located. The sound bug might be occurring when another provider than Miles Audio is selected. So, for those who are experiencing the bug with the sound, use Miles Audio. It may sound awful when in battle, but so far I've yet to encounter a bug with Miles Audio in the main menu.

EDIT: The bug is still present with Miles Fast 2D Positional Audio selected, I spoke too soon -_-... Well, back to the old drawing board.

I've actually found out that some weapons cut from Arenas of Destruction made it into Extreme Destruction. By renaming the .wpn and .rwm files accordingly, I found the tazer and liquid nitrogen gun. I made also made sure to modify the weapons and robots lists to temporarily remove robots with projectile weapons, as those weren't allowed on the real show.

I now know how to at least duplicate weapons, making Gravedigger's 2-tonne hydraulic ram from the "Lifting Arm"! Adjusting the position of the arm wasn't too hard :)
