Title: Robot Wars: Extreme Destruction
Post by: hypnodisc7 on October 25, 2009, 10:15:25 AM
Post anything interesting about the game here.  :-D

Btw, does anyone know where I could buy it?  I think it was only released in the UK, but I'm not sure, 'cause I live in the US.  Or is there a good torrent download somewhere?

Looks like there is a copy of it on ebay for the 1st gen xbox. It is in PAL format though & I am not sure if the original xbox is PAL + NTSC compatible.  Torrent might be your best option if you can find it.

WTF, are you kidding? I had it on PC, and up until I got RA2,
it was definitely a nice robot combat game. Who cares about
paint, as long as the gameplay is good? For that fact, as well
as the generous choice of real robots available, and the cool
arenas available, it's a good simulation of the sport, if not the best.

In closing, I find it a fun game, which I still like to play from
time to time.

I had the game and it was a good substitute before getting RA2...

AOD was a better game though, ED just moved to fast

Robots were too fast (plunder-bird, firestorm)

House robots were to fast,(Sir Killalot moved about like an F1)

Match ended the second someone was pitted, knocked out or thrown oota .... cease wasnt called or anything like AOD

Spinner Robots like Hypnodisc did virtually no damage by the time power ran out for the weapon

AOD was a much better game imo... alot more realistic too but Extreme destruction was still a good source of amusement

I liked AOD but it was really hard to iota any robots.

its like someone could make exactly the same robot as you

Yeah, heh, they really needed more suitable dialogue. Or much better implemented.

Extreme Destruction was far too cheap of a sequel in commentary. For instance, they play the "Looks like the engine's stalled, they're immobilized" line when the bot loses a single motor (and keeps going with the rest ofcourse) .. in AoD, the line is used correctly.

Ed was made when the producers care only about MONIEZ. Remember that.
Title: Re: Robot Wars: Extreme Destruction
Post by: RedSawn on December 05, 2009, 09:13:39 AM
Yeah..

Hmm. It's hard to choose between games sometimes. ED is cheap, production and mostly gameplay/AI-wise, AoD has crappy replicas that you can have more armor points then just by having a barebone chassis (no armor) with unpowered wheels.

Poor gameplay vs. Underpowered replicas of the bots you love (one of the reasons you'd get the game in the first place)
Title: Re: Robot Wars: Extreme Destruction

In AoD, Behemoth is overpowered.

Title: Re: Robot Wars: Extreme Destruction
Post by: RedSawn on December 05, 2009, 01:25:18 PM
True, those two have quite a bit of power - but the replicas all have reliability problems, which in custom bots you'd be very unlucky to have.
Title: Re: Robot Wars: Extreme Destruction

True. I once took out Thor in literally 1 second.

I have to disagree, AoD had some powerful replicas if you used them correctly, which made it more realistic.. for example

Hypnodisc, if you start spinning and keep pushing at your opponent your going to get no where slowly, avoid your opponent and spin up for like 5 or 6 seconds then hit once before backing away and I had the AI's armour off in a few hits

I have also found with razor you can be cleaver and pluck out parts on the other robot, I defeated hypnodisc in one hit by sticking the claw right in where the battery was  ;)

I think ED has worse replicas, Hypno Disc and Revolutionist, 2 of the most destructive bots in RW out of the ones included in the game and could do nothing to other robots

for the replicas I feel that some of them are really powerful like wheely big cheese for example.

If he's used on the boat arena it's just too easy to win with him because he throws them straight off the edge.

For the underpowered hypno disc and revolutionist I have to agree with you.  I wanted to see what razer vs hypnodisc would be like. when hypno disc was computer and I was razer hypno got thrashed and when razer was comp and I was hypno, hypno was still get thrashed.

I know that hypno would cause some damage in real life against razer but in the game he does nothing.

My problem is the judge's decisions - I could dominate the fight, but still get ratted out by the judges. This is particularly a problem in rumbles. One of the New York tournaments, the one with all of those rumbles, took AGES to get past.
Title: Re: Robot Wars: Extreme Destruction
Post by: JoeBlo on December 07, 2009, 09:25:18 PM
I just had the same problem after I made my post ^

I eliminated both other robots and time ran out before I could take out the 3rd and it won the judges decision ? lol

LOL just had a funny glitch happen, was on the navy ship arena and got pushed off the side of the lunch ramp but just when I think its over I could drive on the side of the boat ? I drove back up and onto the surface

meanwhile the AI robot drove of the side trying to attack me XD

best match win ever :P

awesome video

I forgot about extreme destruction on game boy, yes despite the graphics was the most realistic to the actual robot wars. I downloaded it for an emulator so I played it on PC :P

I have to say that ED was much worse then AoD wedges simply didnt work in ED and half the robots couldn't even lift with CO2 flippers

ED was probably worse but I still play it sometimes... has anyone got a save file for ED that's near or totally completed? When my computer got wiped a while back I lost mine, and I dunno if I can be bothered to suffer the horrible lag of the Japanese Rooftops much longer.

the wedge system wasnt implemented in that game at all.. you couldn't get under another robot.. you had to spam the flipper button until they magically turned over

I think he worst thing was Hypnodisc running out of weapon power before it even starts breaking things

Thought so. Anyway, I'd recommend using a fast custom-built bot with strong armour (Just make a generic robot with spikes on the front and the fastest drive and the strongest armour available to you), and try driving around the four "Drop Zones" in a square pattern.
If the boxes are white, drive through and smash them, before turning 90 degrees and making your way to the next one. If it's green, drive around that Drop Zone to the next one in the sequence, before wrinsing and repeating according to the circumstances. Hope this helps!

What does the golden robot look like anyway? Anyone post a picture maybe please?

I cannot give you a picture (yet) But it's a golden hovercraft with front 4-piece extending/grabbing arm and a flamethrower on top. The setup's a bit like Sgt. Bash I suppose but the claw extends on a wire/rod and grips horizontally and vertically rather then just vertically.

I personally don't find the weapons that good, and the chassis can only have those weapons, but the gold motor, armor and traction/hover are the best parts of their category by far.

I usually go for Wedge - Gold Motor - Gold Traction - Gold Armor - Xtra Heavy Flipper (Firestorm style) - No second weapon - Thunder Charge - Powerslide. That reverse flipper has a LOT of power at high speed. To the point where I'm winning by KO in Ultra-Gold Bash and Dash. I've played it on PC. Best memory was flipping Sir Killalot OOTA with Behemoth several times; I could never do it with another bot. And that WBC was a good flipper as long as you flipped their components and not their chassis, but was painfully slow. Thermidor II, on the other hand...

The gameboy advance version of Extreme Destruction was legendary! (not advanced destruction, the less said about that gem the better) By far the best Robot Wars game. Too bad the PC and Xbox versions kinda sucked.

I had have AoD somewhere on my laptop, and ED on my Xbox (Best console ever, amirite?). I'd guess that the PC and console versions are identical in every way. Crap physics and all.

Honestly, my mate at school can make a better physics engine than this game (probably)!

The flippers do not work properly at all.
If you even have so much as 3 small titanium spikes with classic wedge shape, you can kiss self-righting goodbye.
Plus there's absolutely no way to flip house robots, even if you have multiple flippers, whenever Sir K (or another house bot) falls onto his side/is inverted, he magically self-rights for no reason at all

still fun game though despite it's many physics flaws

I didn't like how random flipping was. Get a tiny part of your flipper under a spike or weapon and they'll go barrelling into the air. Get your flipper anywhere near the chassis and they'd bump into the air slightly and not be affected. It was lame.

My beef is more with the uber-aggressive House Robot AI. Very often they'll come out of nowhere to shove you into traps or chase you across the arena to attack only you. I've even had Refbot flip me over when I'm dominating the fight more often than not.

Cheers, guys! Tornado is admittedly a tricky one to OOTA, due to it being all chassis- you'd think something box shaped would be easier to throw.  I was eventually able to get him to the side wall and toss him out- felt good considering that it'd beaten Chaos 2 twice in Extreme 1.

On a side note, in that particular fight, I started with The Argo due to its spikes and easily flippable dome shape, and then finished with Thermidor II.

I may well have created the RW:ED equivalent of SFTW. Behold-

And somehow, I won the RW Championship with this piece of crap, even if it did spend most of its time on fire   :gawe:

I did try that, but it wouldn't let me do so for some reason or another, so I went with 4WD instead.

it'll be a long time though, there's a lot to be figured out and planned.

i'm considering using a newer version of havok, or bullet instead of the broken one installed in there now.

maybe crushers will be able to do some kind of damage

flippers WILL ACTUALLY WORK

I managed to install the game yesterday, and I Played the game through today.

All I can say is that the Car Factory is the creepiest battle arena I've ever seen. I simply love the Sao Paulo arena, and I hope it will be made to RA2 some day. This game has lots of potential but it's basically ruined because of sh**ty physics and ridiculous judges who will never give you points by style or control.

Definitely. I personally liked the Aircraft Carrier and New York Subway Arenas myself, but the Sao Paulo and Car Factory Arenas were awesome too- hopefully we'll see some of the Arenas from that game remade some time.

Mind you, I liked the look of the Replicas they had in there as well- so it's great to see the Textures and things being reused for Wham's RW AI pack.

That always gave me a heart attack because you never knew when it could happen. Sometimes you can be at 0% damage for every component and your robot broke down in 5 seconds, or you could have 66% drive and battery, and nothing bad would happen next match. Inconsistency is what made me stop playing it in the first place. Weapons snapped off at random and half the flippers you could put on your robot were inverted for some reason. This is why I prefer RA2, because things break for a reason.

Indeed. I think my record for it happening was when I was playing in a RW Championship match with Chaos 2, against Odin. Got a good start- charged in, flipped the guy over almost immediately...and then died after 4 seconds.

you can add any game that uses an .exe to launch it into your steam library. it isnt sold on steam AFAIK, and the company that made it went completely out of business last year so it wont come to steam anytime soon.

Title: Re: Robot Wars: Extreme Destruction
Post by: SkullKid2000 on November 27, 2014, 04:28:21 AM
Finally found out why Dead Metal's pushing power was so great in Robot Wars Arenas of Destruction. It was the "COMSHIFT" value in the chassis descriptor for him in Robot Wars Extreme Destruction which had a "\" in front of it. In other words, it was ignored.

The "COMSHIFT" value had three rows of different numbers, supposedly the three XYZ axis. So, I removed the "\" before the Z axis, to make use of the "-25" that was there, and voila! Dead Metal in Robot Wars Extreme Destruction was tilting a little forward, giving him more pushing power, strangely...

Oh, and by the way, while we're talking about the "COMSHIFT" thingy, is there a way to change the center of gravity of robots as well, possibly? As the "COMSHIFT" seem to do just that. There are two lines of the "COMSHIFT" thingy. One for the front, and the other for the rear? No idea... anyone is welcome to reply if you got an idea, or shoot me a Private Message

The only thing the official games have on RW right now is the nice arenas, house bots and perfect replicas.
Our modding, building, physics, etc is all better than the RW games atrocities in most of those respects, plus we'll have all the RW stuff in the aforementioned mod.
I think you're literally the only person I've ever met who prefers any of the official games to RA2 :P

What have you been smoking/drinking/absorbing to think either of the main Robot Wars games are better than Robot Arena 2?

*The RW games were made in-house at a studio owned by the BBC, so that's already not a good sign. It's also the same studio that put out that awful Little Britain game a few years later.
*The physics engine for both RW games are awful. Everything bounces about without any regard for realism or common sense. The robots in Robot Arena 1 may have moved like slabs of concrete, but at least they didn't bounce like they were made out of rubber.
*The house robots are a pain the arse. In ED especially, they just do whatever they like half of the time. You could have the best robot in the game and still get ****ed over because Killalot decided to push you into the pit for no reason.
*Self-righting is bugged so that only specific weapons on specific chassis will work. If you have anything that's not a wedge or an invertable box, you're in for a rough time when you get flipped over. House robots and a lot of replicas automatically right themselves without doing anything and it looks dumb.
*Speaking of replicas, half of them look off. Look at WBC, Tornado and Razer if you don't believe me.
*Robot customisation is extremely limited compared to RA2. Good luck building a wedge robot that can run either way up in the RW games.
*JP won't shut the hell up unless you completely mute him.
*There are way more custom items made by the communty for Robot Arena 2 than for the RW games put together. In fact, are there any Robot Wars game mods that aren't just slight tweeks to the code?

The only thing that the RW games have over RA2 is that they can have more robots in a battle than RA2 can.

I would've have said my replicas are better than the ones from RWED. I know it's a conceited thing to say but they are far more detailed and accurate. Even my earlier Hypnodisc and razer meshes are better.

The thing I think makes the game is atmosphere, aswell as the arenas. So with the Offical MOD I'm doing, all this is revived and you probably won't want to play RWED anymore. Best part is, J Pearce talks a canny bit in the MOD but he's no-where near as annoying as he is in ED or AON.

If someone said that this alone ISNT better than the all the reps in the original RW games then I'll retire :P especially considering its officially the 'new' robot wars game.

Knight, with all respect, everyone can have their own opinions. I prefer the official Robot Wars games, no big deal. That's my opinion, period. I'm not saying that Robot Arena 2 Design & Destroy is bad, did I? No, I did not. Also, I don't drink, smoke or "absorb" anything for that matter. I own Robot Arena 2 Design & Destroy, Robot Wars Arenas of Destruction and Robot Wars Extreme Destruction, but Robot Wars Arenas of Destruction is my favorite of the three, and that's MY opinion, yours can be different. But you don't respect my opinion, I don't respect yours.

talking bout atmosphere...

ED has shadows. RA2 only has shaddows for the chassis but non for components. It's noting you recognize thst often but I think your brain does.

But other than that RA2 is ways better.
Title: Re: Robot Wars: Extreme Destruction
Post by: Lemonism on November 28, 2014, 07:43:08 AM
Thyrus makes a good point. The style of the robot wars games was pretty different to RA2, much more gritty (did I just use gritty in a serious context?) and industrial, and I really prefer that style over the arenas found in RA2. From the looks of things this will change with HB's mod, though.
I just can't put up with the physics in the old robot wars games, nor the limitations on designing my own robot.

I smoke and drink... And I'm a nutter but I'm working for the Official Robot Wars company, so it can't be bad.

Absorb? Did someone call you a sponge? I may have missed that. ;)
Why don't you explain why you think the old games are better rather than saying it repeatedly. That might be why others find it hard to understand your opinion without reason.

Also When the new mod is done SkullKid, if you don't like it more than the old games then I'll eat my hat.

Skullcandy, Before making the mod I actually would have agreed with you purely out of nostalgia and atmosphere but because the mod I'm working on has almost everything from RWED including the house robots and obviously I can play it whenever I like at this point, I feel my mod is literally as good as RA2 and RWED being combined. And I'm not saying that because it's my work, I'm haying it because The team and myself have given it everything we love from the games and more. :)

I'm onto making the house robots playable in this game as well (the GameBoy Advance version). Does anybody have a clue on how to somehow edit .gba files? I opened the Robot Wars Extreme Destruction .gba file in HxD, and found the robots names, nothing more though...

I would hope there was some kind of binary value, something you had to change from 1 to 0 or vice versa, to get them to show up in the robot selection screen... But to me that sounds too good to be true.

Sure, but I don't think there's anything of interest in the .sav file... what would be interesting would be the .gba file I think... my .sav file is after all not complete.

I usually end up like this... quitting and then retrying again and again XD Alright, I'll check the .gba for any clues...

For me it says in HxD 4194304 decimal lines. But I don't get discouraged because of that. I made the house robots playable in Robot Wars Arenas of Destruction. Although that was on the PC, so it was a little easier... but I want them playable on the Game Boy Advance version and I want it badly. Now though, I'm going to search for clues...

WP? No, this is a emulator running on Windows as a .exe.

EDIT: I am comparing a start, "empty" .sav file with a more "complete" .sav file now in HxD to see what the difference is.
Title: Re: Robot Wars: Extreme Destruction
Post by: SkullKid2000 on May 02, 2017, 12:01:32 PM
The .sav file is extremely small, so I begin to believe it MUST be some value or string in the main .gba that changes something, like adding the house robots name somewhere etc.

I just discovered something really interesting with the VisualBoy Advance emulator... you can indeed hack game save states, so it might be possible to "unlock" the house robots by editing the total robots value, in hex possibly...

Try this out by first uploading the video file that you use to make the gifs. You won't be able to embed but the quailty will be 100x better and the file size will be way smaller.

It's often just one of those features that were meant to be finished off, but the developers must either ran of time when making the game, or the game never went through major testing through all the game's features, resulting in the first person camera system never being completed properly. Still, do keep up the work with working with the game's source code.

Not a problem! My interest in Robot Wars will live on probably for as long as I'm still alive ;)

*BUMP*

Just thought I'd post this here, instead of making a new thread with the same name. Every possible cheat for Robot Wars Extreme Destruction for the Game Boy Advance was found in the ROM of the game. Right here.

Except that "CONTRARIO", "OPPOSE" and so on doesn't seem to work... there has to be some way to edit what robot gets unlocked when you beat a certain level or opponent. Either that, or simply try to use one of those cheats at the right time in the game.

I just so wondered if anybody here is good at hex editing game saves. Specifically Game Boy Advance one's, if not that's ok. I am still looking to make the house robots playable in the Game Boy Advance version of Robot Wars Extreme Destruction.

Matilda with her flywheel, single-handedly taking on both Razer and Suicidal Tendencies! Razer with it's nine tonnes of force in it's claw, and Suicidal Tendencies with it's proclaimed twenty-six tonnes of crush. I'd like to say like Jonathan Pearce commented on it: "I find that hard to believe to be honest!"

bump.

Tried installing the Non-CD version from the downloads section.  Might be me being stupid but as soon as I clicked the application a black screen showed up and closed again

Does it not work anymore for Windows 10 or am I missing something?

Go into properties of the appSet compatibility to Windows 98/Windows Me

Now it should work :)

Hello bigbiggerbiggest.

I will download that version from here and check.

EDIT: Hmm... for me it works... but that's under Windows 7... I will provide the updated executable (cracked, and updated to version 1.115b) here in case you want to test that one instead. I doubt anything will change though. But I somehow suspect that it could maybe be the graphics driver that needs to be reinstalled? Not sure...

Razer: "Time for you to find out what it feels like to be a pepper pot!"

Dead Metal: "... Ah, I'll show you what pain's about! I'm gonna rip you up!"

Suppose I'll have to link to the images with another hosting service than OneDrive. I will give ImageShack a try.

EDIT: There, I fixed the links.

Well, it damaged Matilda in the Southern Annihilator. So this is revenge for her I suppose. Still, it's just a game, and I kind of like Razer anyway

Well, if you've got a Nvidia graphics card, it's at www.geforce.com, or, if you've got a Radeon, it's probably www.amd.com. A search engine is your friend

EDIT: Or maybe I can pack/zip my game, and share it here for you

Nah. I tend to stay away from chats, forum's more of what I'm used to. But thanks for the suggestion anyway.
