Directxx 8.1 object error

Attempting to install Robot Wars Extreme Destruction on Windows 10, but whenever I run the setup it gives me a directx 8.1 object error.

I've tried Windows XP compatibility mode + running as admin and neither seem to work.

A quick search in older forum posts says you need to set setup.exe into compatibility mode with Windows XP.
