I was tempted to buy it because I like mon-collecting games like Pokemon and Dragon Warrior Monster, is it anything like that?

Sort of. By the way, this is about Persona 3: FES.

*WARNING! PLOT DETAILS BELOW*

You start off as a guy that has just moved into this city. Every night there is a "hidden hour" called the dark hour. Only a select few can wake up in that hour. You wake up and see monsters roaming the streets and people turned into coffins. The other people in your dorm are monitoring you, as they have the special ability to wake up too. A monster attacks your dorm and you get given a special "gun" called an evoker. This, when used, summons your Persona. Each character has a specific persona but you have a special ability called the "wild card" ability. You can change your Persona at will. You defeat the monster. Everything gets explained blah blah blah... Then you get transported into this room that no one else can see. It's called the "Velvet room". You can change your Personae in here and you get told hints on what you have to do. In the dark hour, your school becomes a dungeon called "Tartarus" (spelling?). Every full moon, a major event happens. Anyway, lots of things happen and in the end, you end up saving the world by defeating the ultimate monster "Nix". After killing it you sacrifice yourself to seal it away forever.

*SPOILERS END HERE*

Gameplay-wise, it is a good game. You go to school and develop social links with people. These unlock "special Personae". You get to have girlfriends and go into the dungeon on a night if you want to. Once you have completed the game, you can do a "new game +" where you start a new game whilst keeping your main characters level, all of your items, all of your equipment and all of your Personae.

So, yeah.... A great game. :P

Anyway, tl;dr, a great game that I strongly recommend.
