Intro
-Well, I'm new here. My first post also. I started using RA2 DSL a few days ago. I have gotten used to it, But my designs are wearing down. Just like the picture above. It works efficiently with a few problems though. But I'm looking for some tips from some robot building pros. Cause all my designs don't seem to work for me. Mostly they just have the worst layouts. I liked playing RA2 for the first time also. But anyways, Tips please?
[INFO ABOUT THIS BOT -Dark Extractor-]
Dark Extractor was kind of like a robotic scorpion on wheels. The Spinning Disc with the small DS teeth? Was supposed to be run into a robot's front at high speeds. But, It turned out weak for doing that job. The 2 hammers were supposed to swing onto the side of a bot to crush it with lots of power. It worked well, but it did little damage.
[More TO Come]
P.S All The Robots I built Turned Out To Be Heavyweights. I need Help On Component Use.
-
Are you using custom motors for the drive and disk? If so, do not use custom components anymore. They are considered cheating and people do not generally like them.
-
The hammers do little damage cause their on the wrong way.
-
I don't use custom components. I use stock components. Here is the Inside of the RObot.
(http://filesmelt.com/downloader/untitled41.JPG) (http://filesmelt.com/)
-
So this can't drive then?..
-
Oh boy.
-
Don't use stock components in DSL.
1. Take out the axles and switch them for NPC Fasts
2. Don't use the square extender, use a polycarbonate or aluminum one.
3. Use Tornado wheels, there lighter and have much more grip than Mud tires
4. Never use angle connetors or anchors. Use Multi-Extenders
5. WWWWAAYYYY underpowered, put in another battlepack and a few ant batts.
6. Remove the ballasts
7. The spinner should have a Perm or TWM motor
Also, look at other people's showcases. Take a good LONG look at their bots.
-
THis drives. Look at the small motor near the wheels.
I need a good chassis shape. Any have ideas?

That's an axle mount, which it's drive purposes are -99999999999999999%.
-
No What I mean is I'm using the Default DSL components. That Axle Mount is the small motor with High Power.
-
Small motor = cheat part
-
I'm guessing that the small motor is a cheatbot2 part in DSL, which is a nono.
-
NNNNNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!
ANOTHER N00B!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!111
*runs to bomb shelter*
EDIT: Just being sarcastic...lol, but your bot needs a lot of work.
-
wtf?
-
Triton that was uncalled for...
First off StoneHead let me personally welcome you to GTM :-D
next thing, those little axle motors that seem to be the hot topic, I have had an issue with DSL 2 before were it can show parts it isnt supposed to, my guess is that your experiencing the same problem
so grab this https://gametechmods.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1396 its a complete DSL 2.1 ready to go, just extract and play, no need to copy files or install, anything you find in that game you can use
Best of luck with that, I hope to see you stick around
:-D
-
If what you're saying is that those parts are available in the bot lab instead of hidden, like they should be, then I'm guessing then that you didn't install the DSL mod correctly. I can't think of another reason why the cheatbot2 parts aren't hidden in your bot lab, other then that you made them so.
If that is not so, then try to stop using cheat parts altogether, you wouldn't gain a lot of respect by doing so (please spare him Nary).
Edit: Dammit JB you beat me :(
-
Don't use stock components in DSL.
are you on crack, or am i?
-
oops, i'm using DSL 2.0
Well anyways, Any tips for components i should use? Cause my mind is making random uses for the components I'm using. [Stock DSL components]
-
oops, i'm using DSL 2.0
Just download the one in my signature. I made it so people could just download it and be done.
-
are you on crack, or am i?
I guess you are.
-
I did.
-
wah

First of all, welcome to the forum.
To answer some of the questions
1. What parts can I use to be consider DSL 2.1 legit?
99% of the parts included in DSL 2.1 (without using cheatbot2), I think the only component that normally shows up on 2.1 yet is banned is typhoon flag.
Some parts (like the axle mount motor) should not show up if DSL 2.1 is installed properly. If for some reason it shows up without the use of cheatbot2, consider deleting your current version and redownload it either from Joe's or Sage's link.
2. Why should I follow this rule?
Due to balance issues, it is impossible to comment on the effectiveness of a bot if it has external parts. Sometimes it's because we simply wouldn't know how the part performs(as in the case of the axle mount). But more importantly, it is to prevent someone from using imbalance external parts to make their bots better.
3. What other rules are there for DSL?
This part of the forum also follow the "realistic rule", which simply states that, if it can't be done in real life, don't do it. For example, things like batteries stacking and 10 spinning components cutting into each other are physically impossible in real life. It is difficult to explain this in detail, so you would have to be the judge.
However, if you do decide that you do not wish to follow these rules, but still want to post, you can try the "custom component" section.
-
Welcome to GTM's. Props for posting the intro.
If I remember correctly, the small motors with the high power (that look like axle mounts) are from Firebeetle's component pack, and are cheat parts. Pretty good thought process on that bot though. I suggest looking through other DSL showcases like Naryar's, Reier's, and Pwnator's in particular for more ideas and ways to improve your bots.

And not Urjak's!? ;)
Anyways, R0B0 is right. The best way to learn how to make good robots in DSL is to check other people's showcases, and maybe try to copy their designs. This is a good way to get used to DSL, and then you can begin making your own, original robots.
-
You use flails bud. Bad influence. ;)
-
All I seem to use in my bots is brute force and major speed. weird.
Ok, So anyways, I looked at some designs. It got me thinking. But they look complicated.
-
But they look complicated.
oops you have wandered into my showcase then
but in all seriousness, small chassis are the way to go, much better on weight so with a small chassis you use things like shell pieces and flipper segments to your advantage...
try make a small chassis (like a 2x2x2 cube :P) and build externally with extenders an armour
-
I guess my bots are fairly simple, yet effevtive, try starting off with mine, other starters might be DM649, 123's, and Ounce.
-
Hello there.
About the DSL showcases, The top ones are Reier's, mine's, R0B0SH4RK's and Urjak's (dont use flails as they are gay though). 123savethewhale's, Pwnator's, Ounce's and Clickbeetle's are worth looking at as well.
And finally don't end building over 9000 generic popups. When you will be good enough, develop your own style (Click, JoeBlo and 123STW did it pretty well)
Oh and about your bot, your extender work is way too heavy.
-
 im hurt naryar you didnt even mention me
-
You're not one of the top builders :P
1st is me (probably), 2nd is R0B0, 3rd is Urjak, 4th is Mike, 5th is Reier, 6th is 123STW, 7th is Ounce, 8th is Pwn, 9th must be Click and 10th probably Scrap.
-
so I dont fit into making your own style part :P ?
flail flame throwers, Gyratory robots, Full Body Flippers, True FBS, Omni Directional servo turret popup ? :P
actually on second thought my showcase isnt a good place to learn from.. too much crazyness in there XD
-

Nah, I'm better than Urjak or Mike... >:P
-
I'm better than Urjak
NOES U R NAWT
-
YES I IS
-
Really ?
-
we shall see soon enough
also I disagree with being better then Mike, Reier
anyways how about everyone stops filling up Stoneheads thread ? make a topic for all your competitive talk :P
-

im guessing you havent seen his Warhead replica and that turkey bot that 123 made.
-
I saw....they aren't really effective, mainly for show, and yes very complicated.
-
I IS THE BEST DSL BUILDER. EVAR. THAT IS ALL.

-
No WAY Click is 9th. 1st or 2nd.
-
I find it hard to believe that Nary considers me one of the top 10 DSL builders: most of my bots are generic :P
And yes JB is under-appreciated.

(http://filesmelt.com/downloader/Robo.JPG) (http://filesmelt.com/)
Well I'm back guys. Here is a new robot.
[ABOUT THIS ROBOT]
BladeHorror was built for charging into robots and inflicting lots of damage. It's 4 blade saws are powered by 2 Perm 80's. It's battery power is low, but it can damage robots that are unprotected easily. The Average Points earned for each charge against a enemy is between 1000 to 1250. It's side skirt panels protect the BladeHorror from side attacks from robots, Like the Big Metal Friend. It has weak materials to hold the whole body though.
[STATS]
Power - Low to Medium
Armor - Very Weak to Below Average
Weapon Choice - Strong to Strong, But easy to fall off.
Wheels And Grip - Average to A Little Over Average
TOTAL - A Little Below Average To A Little Over Average.
Please help me on this robot. I fear it has some problems in the design. But it works good enough for me.
~Stone:gunz:Head~
-
Build to the weight limit and use NPC fasts. Saw blades aren't very good, try using a Mako 4 weapon system.
-
Mako 4? What is that? NPC Fasts? I already built to the weight limit. [As in, I don't know what to put!]
What is better than saw blades?
-

What is better than saw blades?
1. https://gametechmods.com/RA2wiki/images/6/66/Mako_4.jpg
2. You don't have to use all extender as multi extenders.
3. With remaining weight, you could put armor on the bottom
-
I am very new to designs. Mako 4 Looks Reaally complicated.
-
MAGS ARE SSSSSSLLLLLLLLOOOOOOWWWWWWW!
-
sorry! but i could only fit that.
-
That version is a decent improvement from your previous bot. You are learning the ropes... it takes time and patience.
Patience from you because everyone is going to slaughter you with advice and it will be a tad overwhelming.
Patience from everyone else because most of us take our skills for granted but we all started somewhere. (noob wars tourney examples anyone?)
Anyhow... when we say build to the weight limit we mean that you should aim to build stuff on your bot that maxes the weight limit. If you don't have any more room in your chassis for stuff... consider changing the armour type to something thicker to max out your weight. But the better thing to learn is to use components to protect your chassis so it is not hit in the first place.
You stepped up your game and made a much smaller chassis for this bot, you implemented a bunch of the advice to improve your building. Awesome. With time you will do well.
-
Any ideas for my next bot?
I might give you guys the bot. Just for you guys to edit.
-

Try a shell spinner.
-
And yes JB is under-appreciated.
*walks over to ounce* im going to hang out with this guy now :P
that last bot you posted Stonehead is a really good start at things, JD's advice ^^ is really good, his advice got me starting off building better robots
the next thing I suggest is try using some of the other extenders (aluminium and titanium are good ones) and try to compact everything so the extenders are less exposed as they are the weakest points in construction
another tip is the Half Sheet of titanium can actually be attached the base of your robot with one of the middle attachment points (there is 2)
-
Saw blades aren't very good
I'm pretty sure saws are nice in DSL
-
I don't like it that you can't attach sheets or otherwise known as skirts on their base side. It sucks. Well anyways, I'm going to look at some designs and think about this Sheck Bot. [Sheck Bots are kind of like the Industrial Coal Miner Bot Right?]
-
in the extra's click the ramplate preview and in the styles find the half sheet you can attach it to the base using one attachment points.
industrial coal miner is a Face Spinner (if im not mistaken) is you want Sheck Spinner robots look in Urjaks showcase as he is the local expert
-
I guess you are.
I thought you could use stock stuff!?! Ex: I have seen razors on DSL bots
-
some stock things like Irons, Maces, Razors, Sledge hammers, etc were rebalanced in DSL and can be used things like plastic extenders, supervolts, niffy, pink batts, are not allowed in DSL, easy enough If the component has the DSL style preview image it can be used if not then you cant
-
Round, not plastic extenders.
-
I don't like it that you can't attach sheets or otherwise known as skirts on their base side. It sucks.
I guess this game is part design, part puzzle. Even after you know what you want the finish bot to look, you would still need to search for all the right pieces, and a way to fit them all together.
There is the "side panel" if you need some armor connected on the base side.
-
Round, not plastic extenders.
plastic extenders from stock are not allowed for use in DSL..
-
Build to the weight limit and use NPC fasts. Saw blades aren't very good, try using a Mako 4 weapon system.
yes, yes, FAIL!
and joe: That's what he's saying.

New Bot! WIDELOAD STYLE!
[ABOUT THIS BOT -Double Trouble-]
This robot is almost exactly as the Wide Load Bot. Having reinforced beater bars. Lots of protection has been added. Medium plows have been used to protect the bot. Very versatile at ripping off weapons. Easily breaks the Backyard Shredder's deadly disc weapon. Isn't good enough to beat the Undead Beat Bot, But it can last long. Uses Piglet Motors to power the EggBeater Weapon [I think it's that.] Can't destroy armor easily, but once a bot is armorless, It's real damage comes out. Easily destroys Lightweights.
What ya think?
P.S - MY MULTIPLAYER ISN'T WORKING....[As in I don't see servers. I even toggled the online box.
-
Weight Class? Because Lw vs Hw is not fair.
Its a drum, not an eggbeater.
Invertible please.
-
Heavy Weight.
Invertible? What is that?
-
Being invertible means that you can drive upside down.
Can we see some inside shots?
-
That thing is SMALL for a HW.
-
EDIT - I can make it invertible, but, It's too small for that. I can't put the motors back more.
-
Spike hammer?
-
WTF is a spike hammer?
-
...Guys I was confused. I accidently talked about my second bot. But yes, I can make it invertible. But I will have to change the whole setup.
Sorry it's covered. You'll have to figure out the whole thing.

:Confused::Confused::Confused::Confused::Confused::Confused::Confused::Confused::Confused::Confused::Confused::Confused::Confused::Confused::Confused::Confused::Confused::Confused::Confused::Confused::Confused:
-
o_0? What. I made it really armored.
-
its nice to see a drum (not a whole lot of people build those)
your slapping on huge amounts of armour yet it has two exposed arena right at the front that a HS will find quicker then you can say.. "damn should have put armour there"
you will find robots that damage the bottom of another are more common then the top so bottom armour is recommended
-
Working on a second bot. Any ideas for this next one?
-
VS.
-
a HS or Sheck spinner I think are good robot types to start off with
even an SnS
-
Still could do things with that weight like add wedges.
-
Your drum doesn't looks bad, excepted it needs Perm 80 weapon motors to be effective.
-
TriTon, you're posts are pretty (https://gametechmods.com/uploads/images/82878LameOmeter.gif).
-
Um, Can you guys tell me what these initials mean? like that HS? Btw, I don't see servers in multiplayer. I even toggled the internet box!
Anyways, new bot.
(http://filesmelt.com/downloader/Kool.JPG) (http://filesmelt.com/)'
It doesn't seem to do much damage.
-
Well, the weapons are too low and there's not enough.
HS stands for Horizontal spinner, VS for vertical, FS for Face, etc.
You need hamachi to do multiplayer. But honestly it's not too great. TONS of lag.
-
Someone should show this guy the RA2 Wiki. He seems kinda out of the loop.
-
Where you download hamachi?
-
Google it.
-
replace these extenders and razors with heavier weapons and no extenders.
Also S3 wheels aren't very good. Put Tornado wheels on.
