Title: Spinner Bot's Showcase
Post by: Spinner Bot on December 14, 2010, 03:07:29 PM
hey everyone these are my first dsl bots right here so plz say if you like or ways to improve :) Hey guys i updated it no cheat parts and insides!!!!!!!!!!!

First off is my bot Nightmare. A flipper powered by 2 jx burst motors and 2 npc-t64's for drives. (armor: titanium 1)

Now here is my Flipper/full body spinner thingy. Again I used 2 jx burst motors to power his 2 flippers. His name is High flyer (armor: titanium 1)

(https://gametechmods.com/uploads/images/34077high flyer.png)
Lastly I have i think one of my best bots, Whirlwind 3. A full body spinner with 4 30 kg hammers vertically on the sides and the antenna things are to keep him from being flipped if your wondering. his weapon is powered by an extremely powerful duel-perm 132 gearbox. (armor: plastic 1)

Was just about to PM him asking him to showcase a sledge hammer flying Guillotine as his first bot...
Good start but try not to use cheat parts as people will be hating on you.

Yes, there's a lot of improvements here.
First of all, read this to know how to keep your showcase neat as such https://gametechmods.com/forums/index.php/topic,5020.0.html (https://gametechmods.com/forums/index.php/topic,5020.0.html)

Also, erm, I worry about that botlab, that's the starcore UI.
Did you download your DSL from sages sig?

Skins aren't too bad, actually. =) Though one thing we always like is what Armour the bot uses, 'cause we can't see that. And you probably want a shot of the outside, but also the components of the bot as well.

A quick tip, the display mesh (what the component looks like) and the collision mesh (what makes contact with stuff) are sometimes quite a bit different to each other, and the Vlad Flipper is quite a good example. It's got a "step" at the front instead of a wedge, so it makes quite bad wedges compared to Small Wedge components.

And cheat parts are frowned upon. More than ballast.

At scorpion I actually did have regular dsl but I downloaded starcore on accident and now it's screwed so I gotta fix it back to dsl 2.1 some time. This is upwards everyone now I had no idea about others looking at these bots so I didn't know not to use cheat parts. If you want I could make different ones with regular components. And the insides will come maybe tommorow 99% sure. And whirlwind's plastic is 1 and the others are titanium 5. Any other advise/questions to post feel free
Title: Re: Spinner Bot's Showcase
Post by: Scorpion on December 14, 2010, 03:30:37 PM
Ah, that's alright, I was worried you'd have mixed up components and/or AI which would be bad.

And TBH we can't give you that much advice untill we see the insides really.

And I'd edit the first post (and ofcourse future posts) so they adhere to the advice in that link I posted before as it also helps us a lot in helping you.

Well, i've seen worse.

Crop your pictures correctly, please. Go into the "how to create and maintain a quality showcase" thread and follow the hyperlink that is here to the screenshot posting tutorial.

Yah I know this is a bad showcase but it's my first attempt and I threw it together in literally 9-10 minutes
I'll be uploading better pictures with insides and no cheat parts.(might be hard but I'll try) by the weekend or on the weekend. Pictures will be cropped too so keep an eye out

Not too bad, really. Though there are a few flaws.

First off, the only batteries people seem to use around here are the Ant Battery (highest total electricity) and the big 30kg one, I forget the name, only if we're using Beta Burst motors. Long batteries, especially, suck. Battlepacks aren't the best choice, but can be used in certain bots, probably LW and lower.

Also, the best wedges are made using Metal Hinge wedges instead of skirt hinges. You can use skirt hinges on LW's where weight is a concern, however. But you should either use a skirt component or Small Wedge component as a wedge, as they are shown to be the best.

Post by: Spinner Bot on December 15, 2010, 06:47:51 PM
Thx for the pointers. I had no clue those batteries were bad I only picked them cause they fit well enough.
Title: Re: Spinner Bot's Showcase
Post by: NFX on December 15, 2010, 06:49:21 PM
True. And there's really no need to update your first post all the time. You can post new images in a new post, so they're easier to find for people giving pointers. And it's a lot easier to see what progress you've been making.

True true however my first version was garbage so I just replaced it with the better bots. Any other questions/concerns?

On the flipper, instead of using those big burst motors, use Beta's instead.

I'll see into that
Title: Re: Spinner Bot's Showcase
Post by: Scorpion on December 16, 2010, 11:37:21 AM
Some more advice for ya':
Try to minimize chassis space, you'd be surprised how much weight you can save just by tightening up your chassis'
For wheels, hypnos, technos and vlads are probably the three best choices (although there are a few other great choices aswell, depending on what kind of bot you're building).
T-connectors and angle connectors should be avoided, they're too heavy and too weak really, you're better of using normal extenders when possible really.

Oh, and to expand a bit on what NFX advice about batterys, the reason why everybody uses ants is because, due to the weird way power consumption works in this game, one ant battery is enough to power any SPIN motor. Even the dual perms can get by on one ant!
(Although if you want to play it safe you should use 2 ants)
Title: Re: Spinner Bot's Showcase
Post by: NFX on December 16, 2010, 11:42:35 AM
That's true, Scorps. One ant per spin motor (This includes the Geared Beta). BSG's require 2 ants, Mag Snappers need 3, 5 for Small JX's, 7 for Large JX's, and Beta Bursts need the equivelant of 21 ants, or just ofer 3 of the 30kg batteries (saves around 30kg using large batteries for Beta Bursts). I always make a point of slightly overpowering my bots, so they have almost maximum power for the full three minutes. It's never a good thing when you run out of power close to the end, can't self-right, and get counted out with one second remaining on the clock.
Title: Re: Spinner Bot's Showcase
Post by: Scorpion on December 16, 2010, 11:49:40 AM
I personally try to get a number inbetween the minimun power and the max (2 ants per spin in other words), although that's a lot harder to do on LW for example.
And I think there should be a page on the wiki or something about power consumption (i.e how many ants are needed to power each burst) as I always get confused for some reason when it comes to the JX bursts in particular.

123 says it's best to fully power them, and yes it is, but if you're short on weight you can give a burst 80% of it's elecmaxinoutrate, and it will work fine.

Hey everyone. I have a new robot to show you guys named DESTROYER. He is another FBS with vlad pokers as weapons that work suprisingly well. Under are aslo some battleshots of him tearing apart increasingly easy starcore bots.

Armor: plastic 1 due to weight limits

I don't know which world you're in, but that is definitely not starcore and you're not allowed to use DSL in stock.
Title: Re: Spinner Bot's Showcase
Post by: GoldenFox93 on December 27, 2010, 01:57:37 PM
But those are stock bots, and you're fighting them with a DSL bot.

lol thats alright. I actually do have starcore but different bots than him. As i mentioned recently in a different post i had starcore and accidentally downloaded some garbage so now I have these bots until i have some time to download a new version. Just call these bots garbage bots
Title: Re: Spinner Bot's Showcase
Post by: NFX on December 27, 2010, 02:04:57 PM
You don't mix DSL and Stock. ;)

Few things you can do here:
Faster Drive, this probably needs NPC's and Hypnos.
Less ants, this technically only needs 3 ants, but I would probably use 4, or 5 at a stretch.
Conserve weight by using less shell panels, you only need the ones holding the weapons on, really.
UPGRADE THE ARMOUR. Plastic 1 is going to offer very little protection against anything.
Could probably have a lighter anti-immobiliser as well.
Finally, shrink the chassis, it could be a lot lower. Drag the slider all the way down, I think that might work.

That's good. OK then, first things first. In order to do so, you'll need to reinstall your RA2 to how it was when you started out.
Title: Re: Spinner Bot's Showcase
Post by: Scorpion on December 27, 2010, 02:09:02 PM
Head against wall
Face in palm
Fingers in eye

Don't mix stock with DSL!!
Stock bots, even the well built ones in the starcore packs (I presume that's an old starcore pack though) are gonna get ripped to shreds because they have a lot less strength.
In DSL, the parts and the armour is alot stronger, so, just don't do it as it's pointless really.

Now, ignoring that, on to the actual bot.
Rember, ONE ANT CAN FULLY POWER ONE SPIN MOTOR.
You only realy need 3 ants in there, not the 10+ you've actually got there.
You could get away with mag drive for that bot, but put better wheels on it.
Hypnos are the best wheels of that size (rather small).
Vlad spikes may seem good, but they have normals (meaning that they only deal damage with certain sides) this means you're better off not using them.
The top self righter doesn't need to be so heavy, a poly sheet would be sufficient for that.
Try and put some protection on the bottom of the bot, if you click on the middle Atatchment point of a titanium half sheet you can stick it on the bottom of your bot it will protect it nicely (as it becomes invincible).

Also, please could you post the weight of the bot aswell.

Edit: Jesus, 11 replies while I was typing ma wall of text
You'll have got my complaint about DSL and stock mixed by now, and some of my points have already been said by NFX now, but still, I can't be bothered to change that post :P

In this mixed stock/DSL version of the game, yes, unfortunately. However, it's a sacrifice you'll need to make.

Theoratically, yes. Make two copies of the directory, though. You'll need that for the Starcore and DSL.

Good thing you've got me to show you, then  :D

But anyway, enough gloating from me. Once you've deleted the messed up version, here's how to copy the directory-

1) Click on "My Computer"
2) Then click on the button for the C Drive.
3) Program Files
4) Infogrames
5) Once in the Infogrames file, select "Robot Arena 2", but don't go into it.
6) Copy
7) Paste
8) Once the copied file appears, rename it "Robot Arena 2 Starcore". This will be your Starcore directory.
9) Copy the file again, but rename this version "Robot Arena 2 DSL". This will be your DSL directory.

Once you've done this, reply, tell me if you did it correctly, and then I'll continue.
