Title: SKBT's showcase

This is Hang Time. It is a HW. (I know using the tehcnodestructo arm and Judge burst motor is not technicaly allowed but it makes the robot look good and functional)

It uses 4 battlepacks and 2 PC454 batteries
4 NPC fast motors on vlad wheels
Judge burst motor for weapon

Nice. Is that arm attached to the baseplate anchor or a burst motor under it?
Anyways, you should propably change those battle pack to ant batteries if it has a burst motor.

WAIT! Hold on a sec! I just noticed that the background doesnt have the DSL gradient! That means you only have taken the DSL part pack and have it in your stock game.

Burst motor. Baseplate holds Tornado wedge on.

I have the download version of RA2 and installed the DSL 2 download version

Judge Burst motor....not good, that thing's a cheat part.

Did you install the 2.1 patch?
Title: Re: Shish-kabot's showcase
Post by: SKBT on February 03, 2010, 04:36:49 PM
Yes I did install DSL 2.1

About the Judge burst motor. The normal magmotor snapper doesn't have enough power to get the throwability I wanted so I used the Judge one. I know it is cheating. I am not planning to use this bot outside of my game.

or added parts of the stock UI to DSL ? or not copied over the UI ?

the gradient is only an image file within UI

He might have DSL for the download version. The one that doesn't come with a UI folder.

Nahhhhhhhh. :D  We will just learn from it and progress.  You have shown that you are pretty competent builder.  I think most of these savages are just waiting for you to post a totally legal bot so that they can tear it to shreds with constructive feedback.  We really like it when somebody competent starts a showcase, so you are going to get a bunch of attention.

Looking forward to more! Keep building and have fun.

I know I know more cheat parts. I don't like the AI complete control so I attempted to make a more realistic one. When I try to clamp and lift it throws the other bot much like fight or flight though.

Weight class
HW 700KG (I know it is below the limit more of a test right now)

Power
4 PC545's
6 battlepacks

drive
4 NPC fasts on small? wheels

Lifter/clamper
Beta burst (bottom forks)
Mag snapper (clamp arm)

By the way can anyone make a skin for this (sorry template is a BMP)

The Techno Destructo arm is actually a stock part (it's in a drop down menu somewhere in extras).  The only "cheat" part you're using is the Judge motor.

If you want to try and make Hang Time legal, you can try a JX burst or a Beta burst.

I didn't have anyone in particular in mind when I said that.  I was just giving the new guy a heads-up on the possible perils of getting feedback from the forum. Sometimes it is brutal.  Kinda like fraternal hazing.  In fact, I am just going to stop giving feedback about bots now and just post a picture of a paddle whenever I don't like something about a bot.

Looks great.

I would switch those extenders for aluminum ones. Then with remaining weight go to Hypnos or Tornado wheels. And one more ant would be best.

Title: Re: Shish-kabot's showcase
Post by: Pwnator on February 10, 2010, 05:26:34 AM
Good job! You can still have a smaller chassis (have the ants arranged in a 2x2 form, all lying down, and the control board above it), which means you could either have stronger armor, or longer and stronger extenders (like DSL bars). :D
Title: Re: Shish-kabot's showcase
Post by: SKBT on February 10, 2010, 05:41:56 AM
I already tried it with the same chasis as the LW version but it was unstable. It would spin and then start to go crazy and then start to spin on a hammer.

I found my showcase!

797,7KGS
plastic 1
Double Perm weapon motor
4 70KG hammers
2 NPC drive motors on hypno wheels
4 ant batteries
1 Funky asembly that sometimes self rights it
Title: Re: Shish-kabot's showcase
Post by: Clickbeetle on March 02, 2010, 11:00:36 PM
Plastic 1?  Something's not right here, you should be able to get stronger armor than that with the stuff you have.  The srimech can't be THAT heavy.

Speaking of srimechs, you might try the setup I used on Tempest (in the Megaton team).  That's the most reliable way of self-righting a shell spinner I've found.  The key is the stabilizer that sticks out beyond the shell which also doubles as bottom armor.

Looks like a solidly powerful shell spinner you've got there, in any case.

There's gotta be a better way to attach the drive motors, so you can get at least 1mm Ti.

Otherwise looks great.

Title: Re: Shish-kabot's showcase

It's RA2 - your bot's components can pass through other each other.

They are coming out of the axles because of the centrifugal force (obvious but still)

Post by: Somebody on March 20, 2010, 05:30:50 PM
Chassis could be shrunk, and theoretically this could run on two ants. More is better though. One thing that I like to do is to angle down the discs to hit lower targets and protect motors.
You could at least try it to see how it works.

Title: Re: Shish-kabot's showcase
Post by: Pwnator on April 17, 2010, 09:57:51 AM
Shrink the chassis, use Vlads, remove the flipper segment, and just attach the sledges directly to a multi-extender each (you'll have to widen the chassis a bit but you should make it shorter) so you can use metal hinge wedges. If you still have free weight, add 2 more ants.

Also, if you have enough time, try using a 4 30kg-sledge setup like this one from Inf:

But I think he used a skirt hinge. A metal hinge would be better for that. :D

You might use NPCs rather than NPC Fasts because Fasts have only 400 HP (unlike the NPC's 11000) and can get ripped off REALLY quick in such a design, or put them inside the chassis.

Small perms also have only 400 HP btw.

It doesn't looks bad, but maybe would be better with a longer wedge and a more trap-ish setup (V-or U-shaped weapon setup)

I am not sure about that heavy extender work as well. You could also try just a skirt hinge to hold the 3 hammers, maybe more for caster armor-style protection.

Nice heavy weight, Do those *insertnameofspikeshere*  drag on the floor? the Duel Perm may be overkill, i would use a 6 mag. does it drive straight?
Middle weight, you could shrink the chassis a bit, and the setup looks good, looks like it could win quite a lot. May i add it might will do well in my tourney? also again, does it drive straight?
These bots can will most of the time always destroy mine!

Nice.

I've been working on a way to get rid of those pesky shell spinners. I know it probably looks kinda sloppy right now.

Name: The Spin Stops Here
Batterys: 4 PC625's and 1 ant
Weapons: 10 Beater bars on a beta burst
Drive: 2 Drive E-tek
Tite 3

It de-shell all shell spinners in Nar AI 2.3 and does decently against most SNS's and HS's. Fails against anything with a wedge becauses the wedges on it are bad.

Betas are bad for hammers. They have torque, not speed, and you need speed. Try JX Bursts.

Not to mention moving the motors back will increase the pressure on the wedge(s) and make them better. I had the same issue with a few revisions of one of my bots.

Not to mention moving the motors back will increase the pressure on the wedge(s) and make them better.

I tried that when I first built it but then I decided being able to piviot to get the weapon facing the other bot faster was more important than wedges.

Now time to go have fun with those multi extenders.

Betas are bad for hammers. They have torque, not speed, and you need speed. Try JX Bursts.

What are you even talking about ?

Seriously how many DSL HW hammers did Somebody built ? True they aren't very fast and multiple smaller bursts are a good option, but Betas are NOT bad for hammrs.

Hmm i said that ? Well that was probably a VERY long time ago, but i was wrong (probably did not built enough hammers at the time)

Undeadbeat (the original one) is bad because it has no wedge, next to no trapping capabilities and a very average weapon.

KLONE!!

(https://gametechmods.com/uploads/images/60509Fire fight.png)

plastic 3mm
4 ants

It works decently mostly subject to recoil effects and inability to wedge under anything at all. I'm undecided on what to do with the extra weight. (Somehow fit wedges on it or add heavyer weapons.)

EDIT: Should this even be in a DSL Showcase? It has NAR AI components and NAR AI is a different mod than DSL.
Title: Re: SKBT's showcase
Post by: SKBT on July 01, 2010, 08:00:09 PM
I see you have changed your forum name ;D

I do not think that NAR AI should have its own section because it is so piggybacked off of DSL and other packs.

About the bot... Needs a wedge, and uses GHEY parts.

I changed my forum name because everything on this forum that I ever posted in showed up in google when I searched my bots name.

No about the bot. I could easily build this with a perm 80 and it would be comparable.

Don't use NPC's for LW's. All you need is a TWM3 Drive version, and you should be fine drive wise. With that, put more weapons on it.

It's a rammer. In the LW division, you NEED at least normal NPC's. I should know... it's my big weakness with Kurt Rambis in BBEANS6.

Also, Somebody is right. The chassis can be shrunk and razor tips can be brought into the equation for more weaponry.

Otherwise, that robot looks rather good, and I wish that I put something in like that for BBEANS instead of what I did.

ARGH!! looks ok but lacks the T chassis and has a wedge ?

im just messing with you, its nice to have people cloning my robots for once.. but just remember my designs are not so basic.. I usually tweak designs to get the effects (Like T-Roads quick oota ability)

get a T chassis (at least if your cloning) and put the 2 skirt hindges in the bottom of the T and the drives up the top.. the batts shoudl fit between the skirt hinges and use razors on a LW

wait why am I telling you this ? I was going to make a LW T-Road for the Trials  ;)

I'm not sure sometimes how RA2 handles damage, but I presume that the razors have to get up to speed before they will do serious damage.
Title: Re: SKBT's showcase
Post by: Gazea2 on July 17, 2010, 01:35:24 AM
For future reference, any components, including razors, do more damage with the more faces that come into contact with the other bot.

So, if you put the razors with two faces hitting the other bot, they will do more damage.

This is a myth IMO. Pyscolone suggested this as a theory, and it got accepted as gospel somewhere along the line.

As for your question about damage, Inplabth nailed it. The faster a component is moving, the more damage it will do (basic kinetic energy principles). As a result, in order to do adequate damage the razors on a popup have to be in motion when they come in contact with an opponent (why do you think R4 has ears?). If you look at how your bot is designed, the razors start through the wedge, so they aren't impacting the opponents chassis at all, just flipping it. To fix it, just start the arc of the swing lower.
Title: Re: SKBT's showcase
Post by: 123savethewhales on July 20, 2010, 10:13:51 AM
The damage is different between having the razors hit on the sharp side vs the flat side.  This is most noticeable on flail SnS.  I have done extensive testing on this.

However, I have not test this for any other weapons.  So this phenomenon can be cause by something else.  A more likely reason will probably be how speed is calculated on contact, as this game clearly does not do that consistently.

That said, burst motor/piston need start up distance to gain speed, so razors need to stay under the wedge to deal damage.

Weapon assembly is on a servo piston so it can be lifted out of the way and then brought down ontop of the other robot acting as a clamp. It works best against shell spinners rammers and anything it can outwedge.

Grindstone: That actually looks quite good. How does it do when inverted?
Spinoff: Not bad. If you lost an ant or two, you could probably get heavy DS teeth on the hammer, I think they might work a bit better than Beater Bars.

Regarding the drum, I built something like that about a year ago, but its wedges sucked.  Yours are probably better though.

Personally, I find that having more individual weapons on gut-rippers is better; try a combination of small beater bars and small DS teeth.

You could probably get away with 6 ants on the hammer, but the output from the motors might not be as much.

@JoeBlo: The clones are invertable for what ever reason.  I think it has to do with the large colisin mesh of hypno wheels. :P
Thanks I didn't know my showcase was popular.

@NFX: The drum is invertable but looses most of it's effectiveness.

All wheels have a collision mesh that extends the same distance from the surface, IIRC. I thought it was something to do with resistance.
Title: Re: SKBT's showcase
Post by: JoeBlo on August 30, 2010, 07:15:58 AM
not collision.. the collision is the green mesh that sits tightly around the wheel itself .. the red mesh is where the grib is applied.. the stock wheels had quite small ones but some DSL ones have large.. 123 demonstrated this exploit but using the bike wheels on a crawler to allow perfect grip and drive

but it only used the grip mesh... the wheels were concealed inside the "dome" components making the crawler weaponry

What angle did you use on the axles? I've had best luck with 90 degree ones for the extra sweeping power.

The first version has a wider radius, and width is very important for sweep.

You can probably turn those multi extenders out by 30 or 40 degrees, so you have a larger radius.

You only need a min. supply for Flamethrowers, they run after it is out of CO2 as long as the control is held down.

These flamers aren't well placed anyways. Not going to deal much damage.

Also your heavy plow extender work is exposed, making the extenders prone to getting ripped off quickly and not using the plow's fracture to the best.

yes and no... yes if your player controlling, no if your AIing.

traditional AI methods wont be able to abuse this for some reason only hax can have the robots maintain a strong flame constantly under AI otherwise it will slowly die out like it is meant to.  ;)

BRAVO for doing a UHW hammer.

I thought about it... but when it came right down to it, I didn't have the guts to try building one.  It's a risky move.

Silly Pwn. Thanks to the shape of the BSG's, it's unlikely that he'll get to the chassis. Besides, my teeth clamp from the sides, so unless he deliberately goes for the side due to AI'ing, he'll walk right into my trap, and his chassis will be all mine.

Heck, you didn't even design them

the crossed weapon design with Skirt Hinges (which I specified) was my original concept to create a larger area of contact (see Lo-Road and T-Road IV)

this robot of SKBT's doesnt quite use it to that effect but I imagine it would also help with the weapons not touching the ground..

Silly FOTEPX. Clearly my simple English statement is too much for your cocky attitude. I never said that his bot would beat yours. I was just attacking your statement that your bot will easily finish him off.

Seriously. Did you even analyze the situation? Take note of your bot's attack radii. Take note of his chassis size. Also, take note of the components protecting his chassis and wheels. Initial rushes would be a bore for both bots because the rammer can't take out your BSGs immediately, and your weapons would just hit the sheets and/or razors. There will come a time that excessive ramming would cause your bursts to slow down, and there will come a time that his sheets and outer razors will come off, exposing the nomnoms, which means your bot has a high chance to win when both bots face each other. But a quick match? Pffft.
Title: Re: SKBT's showcase
Post by: SKBT on November 14, 2010, 07:19:18 AM
But why the crossed rammer design ?

The crossed rammer design looks cooler than the normal rammer design.  The reason that the razors aren't  fully crossed like T-Road is the part of skirt hinges that creates Narmor lifts the front of the bot off the ground.

If you did just edge the narmour up a little bit, it'd lift the front of the bot off the ground, and keep the weapons off the ground. Unless it'd tilt forward with the weight of all those RAZORS.

There isn't any narmor. The part that creates it is mostly inside the cube. It's why the razors aren't fully crossed.

wat?

Naryar said it was an original design

so SB asked for him to find one that looks similar to it to prove himself wrong

either that or 1 of you guys posts don't make sense :S
Title: Re: SKBT's showcase

Actually, Naryar said that trappers were not a new design, and Somebody asked Nar to provide an example of another trapper that looks like SKBT's. =P
Title: Re: SKBT's showcase
Post by: Somebody on November 24, 2010, 07:15:53 PM
Naryar asked if SKBT was starting to be original

I pointed out that he has been building cool trappers for a while

Nary said the trappers aren't new

And I said they were by challenging him to find another trapper that looks like one of SKBT's.

Why is my showcase getting more action now instead of when I post a bot? :P I think Nary tried to compliment me but it kinda got lost in translation.

About the clamps. They were inspired by SOB/That Darn Dustpan. I have another one in the works.  It uses flailing razors instead of sawblades.

Title: Re: SKBT's showcase
Post by: Naryar on November 25, 2010, 12:22:30 PM
Extender work could be better but pretty good i guess.

I don't think you need   4WD straight NPC Fast drive touching the ground with Hypno wheels for a HW servo clamp, I guess. I think only 2WD NPC Fast drive with Technos is fine.

Title: Re: SKBT's showcase
Post by: SKBT on November 25, 2010, 12:42:48 PM
More drive = better pushing power = better SNS and spinner stopping abilities

Also how could my extender work be better?
Title: Re: SKBT's showcase
Post by: Naryar on November 25, 2010, 12:51:07 PM
Maybe by attaching directly the plows to the chassis via partially V-shaped chassis (see Rabid Grisly Bear). Not only you'll get a stronger chassis, but no plow extender work to hit at.
Title: Re: SKBT's showcase
Post by: MassimoV on November 25, 2010, 01:14:30 PM
I think it should be called "Death from an Omnivore"  :gawe:. Looks great though. Are the side pannels a counter-weight for the weapon.
Title: Re: SKBT's showcase
Post by: SKBT on November 25, 2010, 01:31:10 PM
Ha Ha funny. It is the result of taking the best from both. The DSL bars on the back are the counterweight for the weapon and help with self-righting it.

@Nary: I'll see what I can do with a bigger chasis. Be warned it might make more empty space :P.

and the titanium halfsheets to DSL bars.
Although this increases HP, when the small wedges fall off, the half-sheets leave a secondary wedge, DSL bars have blunt ends.

That depends on what you intended your poker to be. DP-based pokers and concussion-based pokers have their own pros and cons. :D

[Edit] Also, there's nothing wrong with what you said. A DSL bar+small wedge setup might be better if it makes the bot wedgier, but as of now we're just uncertain. :P

The idea came from a discussion in Physics class today. It could be built better (I know) but it works and I was sick of rebuilding it to get it to work :P.

Edit: it's weight is less than the 50% weight bonus given to non wheeled robots IRL. Does this mean it is technically a MW or is there no imaginary RA2 walker weight bonus?

Stabilizer setup's fine. It's the motor guard that's eating up the weight.
Hecould just use the one flipper segment though ;P

It's pretty much dead when it meets a popup. Having only one flipper segment on each side means the chassis will be so laid back that it will pretty much hug the ground when the motor hits something.

Putting the segment on the other way, rotated 90 degrees would fix this I believe.

Could have lighter stabiliser work if you ask me, and that drive seems weird, doesn't it drive weirdly because of it?
It drives fine.

I actually had extra weight so that's where the motor gaurd came from, that and a 400 HP motor like that is a sitting duck otherwise.
Also, probably too slow.

I don't think I've ever seen a LW VS with anything above astros for drive. :P

I voted for it.  Even though it does look quite tippy, with the fast drive and high center of gravity.  It's a cool design and hard to pull off on a MW.

Wow Click and Joe voted for me.

It's stable when the counterweight is on the ground. (Don't ask me how. I just got lucky)

Can anyone tell me how to AI this. I forget how to use the SOW AI.
Title: Re: SKBT's showcase
Post by: Clickbeetle on March 31, 2011, 10:46:13 PM
SOW AI is for bots with a horizontal turret.  For this you would need Kheper.py or something similar.  However Kheper.py is rather difficult to use... what do you want to AI it for?
Title: Re: SKBT's showcase

SOW AI is for bots with a horizontal turret.
Oh... I though it mean Servo Operated Weapon and it could be used for clamps. :P
For this you would need Kheper.py or something similar.  However Kheper.py is rather difficult to use... what do you want to AI it for?
I want to AI it mostly because it's hard to drive/use the weapon at the same time and I want to know how to AI something like this.

So where could I find Kheper.py? And is it really that hard to use?
Title: Re: SKBT's showcase
Post by: Clickbeetle on March 31, 2011, 11:14:27 PM
The py can be found in here https://gametechmods.com/uploads/files/Kheper.zip

And it's hard to use because the start and end rotation angles in the .py are specific to Kheper.  So you need to make a copy of the .py and edit those angles if you want to use it for another bot.

*digs up old picture*

This is how the angles are oriented on Kheper... but it will be different depending on how the servo is rotated.

Title: Re: SKBT's showcase
Post by: NFX on April 16, 2011, 11:41:46 AM
That does look a bit overweaponed to me. Kinda like WAT4 on steroids. I would definitely consider dropping some weaponry, upgrade the drive, try to make it invertible as well. And raise the discs off the ground, if they're not off the ground already.

Drive is quite clearly overkill, and the wedge looks average at best. Especially with Etek drive. I've never had good wedges with 2WD E-Tek drive on heavies.

That looks quite good to me, especially in terms of weapon setup. I might consider putting something on the discs so they don't get knocked off so easily, but do they mess up the wedges at all?

MASSIVE JAWS OF DEFEAT = <3
I think the razors should be as aligned as possible, though. Side ones don't seem to be doing much, in my view.

MW looks pretty good, but the extender setup could be lightened up a touch, I think.

rammer looks good.
From my experience, just LDS teeth on a vs isn't enough, they just break off to easy.
As NFX said, lighten up the extender work on it, and also downgrade the disk a little, and see if you can upgrade the weapons a bit.

I'm guessing it's because the real last rites didn't control 2 drive motors + powerful weapon motor with one cb :P
Much the same way the real last rites didn't run off 3 small battery packs.

I went for the accurate insides approach. If you look at the CBs you'll notice there are  four, 3 blue and one small one. The three blue represent the ESC's and the small one is supposed to be a receiver. Also it's got an accurate weapon motor and accurate drive motors.

I had this idea. I don't know if its been used like this before (and if it was used this way I'm sorry if I'm taking credit for it)

What this idea is, is a way to have a holonomic drivetrain in RA2

Yeah, though you don't want to leave it pressed or else they'll spin freely and could end up inside the chassis.

Looks awesome but I'd also be concerned about the weapon reach (and the power too, if that's only a Perm 80 in there, which I think it is because the bot looks too flat for a 132).
Title: Re: SKBT's showcase

It has a perm 132 in it. The skinned slipperbottoms might be throwing you off to how big the chassis is.

That'll be because of the relatively small size and high grip/speed of the drivetrain. Sometimes the motors can't really cope with how fast the bot wants to turn. Still look like a pretty decent bot.

On both, you just need one set of sheets, but you NEED them. The steadiness will help it spin faster.

My suggestions (if the bottom has NPC Fasts)
Drop to NPC Normal
Angle motors up one click
Add sheets on the outer APs, but if possible you could angle them the other way to get a marginally wider stability circle, better for the faster spin. The inner APs will cause the bot to be tippy.

Oh, a lampshade hanging on my supposed heart of gold. Should have called this before.

Nice ? I am merely being honest. When I feel a bot is interesting, I say it. When I feel a bot is utter crap, I sure as heck am gonna say it. If this was not somewhat original on weapon setup, I would not have told you this. After all, my goal here is to encourage originality, smart building and combat effectiveness, as well as bashing n00bs and fighting with other people and their bots.

Yes, I know I bash people more easily than praise people, unlike some of the softer hearted people. But doesn't mean I can't give a good comment.

When you and that showcase were new to these forums, I remember you spending your time cloning bots and copying other people, and I was a bit pissed by that. Now, since a few months, you have developed your own style. It's not flamboyantly visible and unique like Mike's, but it is unique enough. That's what a builder is supposed to do. Well done about that !

I would suppose it is a MW for battlebots 3, and that it has 4WD Mag drive ?

Also why are you using 4WD on a DSL MW is beyond me.

Looks fantastic, that's gotta be one of my favourite IRL bots of yours. Would maybe look better with a bit of skinning, though. Are those just halfsheets, or a bit of a daft chassis?

Halfsheets. The chassis is just much longer than larger, since the Eteks are external.

And yeah, it's quite fast. I would add more weapons really.

The 2nd hexplate is there to act as a spacer to center the beater bars.

Also if I remove the wheel guards and stuff that makes it look cool, and add 4 more beater bars it's actually a pretty competitive regular DSL bot.

Metal Hinge Wedges = Poor show.

Title: Re: SKBT's showcase
Post by: SKBT on November 14, 2011, 12:39:59 PM
The metal hinges were added as an attempt to cover up my lack of DSL bar to chassis blending (https://gametechmods.com/uploads/images/16916fds.png) and to make it look cleaner.

The teeth on the top are there to trap the other robot like this (https://gametechmods.com/uploads/images/83883dsfjlfjk.png)

I did not enter this in BB4, I entered my Complete Control style clamp bot.

I see. I'm guessing they would still work if they were facing backwards, it might look a bit cooler. I'm guessing you could try a Skirt Hinge with the Small Wedges on, rather than three Metal Hinge ones, or rather you could try a slightly wider front end of the chassis.

There isn't much to see inside. Its got plastic 3, 3 ants, and the 5kg control board. It weighs 398.7kg.

I used the drum maker instead of a hexplate because it brought the hammers lower to the ground than the hexplate did.

Wire it so then the wedge can fall down if it's inverted (I'm assuming skirts work the same as metal hinges when wired, as I haven't tried with them)?

I was thinking just have a Movement range, with the start and end points touching the ground when it was either way up. That's what I did for Halitosis, it's much easier than having a complicated button wiring thing.

You mean on a servo?
And you don't really need it to be that complicated, I believe you could just wire it as a srimech, once it's fired it'll remain hanging, the problem would be if it gets caught underneath of course, but I suppose that fits IRL.

Oh, didn't realise they work that, I think I ignore skirt hinges too much due to the ease of AGOD with my game.

Invertible VS... the spinner is on a axle so if the bot gets inverted the whole thing flips

The pause button on your keyboard is your friend...

It's awesome and I want one.

I'll put it on the bot exchange for you.

Edit: It AGOD'ed when I tried to export it, so you are going to need to press the Pause/Break button before you load the match and press it again once the match starts. It's on the bot exchange under the name "Apathy" in the DSL Heavy Weight section

Yeah I tried that a while ago. AGOD to be expected lol. With a VS with sideways drive (like on Joe's BOTM bot a long time ago) an it AGODed twice, before and after completely rebuilding to get rid of AGOD.

Looks cool though.

Nice sturdy-looking, simple bot. I'd try to get another set of Flipper makers to go on the top, so it looks more even. And perhaps not have the Side Panels sticking out like that. Apart from that, I very much like it. You've got some pretty good IRL designs.

Its a little different than any other flipper I've made...

It's flipper arm is on a 90 degree axle and uses two rocket boosters to power it. One is on the arm and propels the arm up and the other is on the bot and sticks the bot to the arena floor so that it doesn't launch itself. In terms of functionality and performance it's the closest thing to a real pneumatic flipper that you'll get in RA2.

I had to edit the rocket booster's power to 200 to make it work and it still doesn't flip very high.

Yeah pretty much like that.

The static beaters seem a bit wonky though.  The inner ones look too close to the center to hit anything.  Maybe you could put a beater where the 20cm poly extenders are now, and put another beater on the end of that, and save 4kg in the process which I'm not sure what you would do with.
Title: Re: SKBT's showcase
Post by: Somebody on August 15, 2012, 09:27:34 PM
I'm guessing it rotates towards the beater. If so, switch the razor tip opposite from the beaters to the side with the beaters. Also instead of the beaters, to would probably be fine with just a flipper segment tere, freeing up more weight for more weapons, or more drive. My recommendation being more weapons. If you really need to squeeze out a couple kgs for a weapon, you could downgrade the aluminum sheets to poly, but they should be fine as is.

Hmm... I remember putting them on the other way with a bias towards the beater bar side... I guess the flails must have flailed when I posed the bot for the picture.

It's much less of a killer than it looks.

The weapon and wheel radius-es look too similar. Either make it so your drive sticks out less or increase the weapon radius.

Looks pretty good. Apart from the metal hinges and exposed motor. :gawe:

Would it be possible to make the chassis that shape, instead of using metal hinges? That would free up some weight to add motor supports of some description, maybe a couple of flipper segments or so.

I actually did try that. I couldn't quite get it to look right though. I was kinda going for something like MikeNCR's 1lb (http://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash3/s720x720/534533_10100226583471945_1105044994_n.jpg) bot with the wedge.

win about 4/10 of wedge on wedge with the original. might have to play around with counterweights but it's still stupidly wedgey.
Title: Re: SKBT's showcase
Post by: Jack Daniels on November 23, 2012, 03:37:53 PM
Be sure to test it on the anticipated arena floor.  I find that when setting up wedges like that it will vary in effectiveness depending on how much they cut into the floor itself.  Sometimes the metal hinge wedges will dip into the floor and make the upper (skirt hinge?) wedges graze the floor instead.  Making the setup useless.

In summary, be sure to test it on the floor just to be sure.

You could just modify the component's weight. My skirt hinge burst is 25kg, and about midway between the Judge Burst and JX in terms of power. The "ram" extenders are sometimes added just for aesthetic purposes, a bit like the motor supports on a Last Rites-style spinner.

I thought it'd be a lot easier to do Mecanum drive the way Pwn had his old Root Canal replica, with the wheels all spaced and angled evenly around a chassis. That way you wouldn't need servos.

That's actually omni-drive, not mecanum. Mecanum has the wheels laid out in the normal manner with angled rollers built into them, omni-wheels use the angled wheels with non-angled rollers built into them.

Is this going in BB9?

i'm not sure. i want to, but it doesn't consistently land in a position that the ai will go "hey i'm upside down, better fix that". as a mw, its not armored enough to last and as a hw it doesn't do enough damage. so to sum it up, it looks cool and thats it.
