Scrapyard24c's DSL Garage
« on: October 31, 2012, 02:15:21 AM »
Since this is my first time here, I decided to start off with what possibly is the best rammer I've ever built, Road Boss.

Despite it's weight and size, it is very fast and stable and has be known to do impressions of Storm II throwing out Steel Avenger in the DSL, Blade, and Robot Wars arenas.  It's only weaknesses are it can't self right when on it's roof (can sometimes if on it's side), thin armor (1mm steel), and it doesn't like FBSs.

Battlebots 8: MW Quarterfinals - Dr. Demolition
Battlebots 9: HW Quarterfinals - Texas Tornado
Battlebots 9: Middleweight Champion - Dr. Demolition
Minor Inconveniences: Runners-up - Hot Rod/Voltergeist
TGRR2 IRL: Texas Tornado 11 wins - 10 losses

nice, could be a good solid bot after a few changes

some things to remember in dsl-
any spin motors require only one ant battery each. you can add another one if you need more power though. burst motors need more power though (2.5 for a bsg, 5 for a small jx, 7 for a large and 21 for a beta i think)
pussycat wheels are pretty bad in dsl, techno destructo wheels are generally the best. other options are hypno wheels, vlad wheels, sometimes shiny wheels if you have no weight but need height and ant/mini wheels. the last 2 are only for lightweights and below and vlads/shinies arent the best choice for heavyweights
usually best wedges come from metal hinges. you can either put a small wedge on it (perhaps with a dsl bar or something to make it longer) or skirts like you have.
if you swap the baseplate anchor for a multi extender, you'll have more weight for other stuff. also, the extenders have attachment points on both sides so you can attach them directly to the multi extender to save more weight.
those spikes have normals which can sometimes be ok on rammers, but here you are better off with different weapons. beater bars and light ds teeth should do. you can add more layers to your rammers by just putting more multi extenders slightly higher
you would want to have the smallest chassis possible that can fit what you need in it. a smaller chassis means more weight which you can use elsewhere instead of being wasted on a bigger chassis.

it might be a lot to take in but it's worth it

there are also lots of tips on the wiki and you can also look in people's showcases to get a good idea for bot building
DSL Showcase
is this bot don't lost all razors in a fight before do a damage thought

It's...large? Fit your chassis around your components.

I think ty nailed everything that is wrong with that bot. Read his post again, that is good advice.

It looks cool, but if you want it to be combat worthy, do all of the things previously mentioned.

Currently modifying Road Boss.  The reason behind why Road Boss is so big is that it's actually a reused chassis from Stock RA2 and in there I had to make room for the Z-Tek motors and Big Volts inside Road Boss at the time.  Unfortunately I forgot to save that version before converting it.

In the mean time, I could use some help with a middleweight of mine.  This is Enforcer.  It's based off of The Matador from Battlebots and the only cheatbot2 component inside it is a Judge burst motor.  It it is very quick (sometimes too quick) and can easily get underneath most of the stock dsl ai but has trouble with robots that have a titanium sheet sticking out from underneath it such as Saber Teeth and The Boxer Returns.  It's flipper isn't too powerful as it was built more for efficiency but it has no trouble self-righting.

Enforcer's mortal enemy.  #?*! you SlashBack!    :realmad(

Latest and probably my deadliest robot so far, Shredator.  Quick and can spin on the spot, Shredator sports two discs lined with Hypno-Disc teeth and has left many of the AI robots all over the arena, in more ways than one.  If it ever gets flipped, the back wheels still can touch the ground and simply run it blades first into the nearest wall and it will put itself back on it's feet.  Only weaknesses I can point out is that the teeth can break off at times and that it can be difficult to keep under control sometimes.

Love the looks of it, but if the teeth on those discs go through the motors, it's unrealistic. Otherwise, it looks great for an IRL bot.

Ok just went and checked and the discs don't intersect the motors fortunately.  Unfortunately it just got handed it's first loss after getting butt f*cked by Industrial Coal Miner.

Otherwise it's path of destruction continues as seen here with Cranky Spanky and Bad Dog becoming two of it's latest victims.  If you're wondering about Backyard Shredder, Cranky flipped it late into the match and it just ricocheted around the arena like a pinball for the rest of the match.

If you nix those big ass batteries and replace them with 4 ant batteries it will give you some extra weight to play with.  (upgrade armor or add more weapons)

I'm not too fond of the front wedge asthetically.  It looks effective for combat, but doesn't flow well if you are trying to make the bot look realistic.

Overall, the design is pretty cool.  I am with Handrew in believing that the weapons cut into the motors.  It just doesn't look possible that they don't.

Keep up the good work.  I am enjoying your progress in this showcase.

Also, props for properly sized and cropped pictures in your showcase.  A lot of new members totally screw that up.

My most dangerous Middleweight to date, Industrial Shredder.  It has a decent speed and a small turning circle and it's spinning blade has turned several other robots into scrap metal.  It's only problems is that it seems to always pull to the right when going forwards and the fact it can't self right. Had to use beater bars on this one because the Hypno-Disc teeth were too big.

Another one of my creations, looking like it came straight out of a junkyard, is Trash Can Hero.  A Behemoth style middleweight, THC can get to a decent speed and has a zero turning circle.  It's weapons of course are a lifting snow plow and an over head ax.  It uses no cheatbot2 parts and with the six wheel drive and the extremely low ground clearance of the plow, can shove other robots around like nobody's business and the plow also deflects blows from spinners.  An interesting fact is that it can use the snow plow to right itself.  The two weaknesses I can think it has are it's exposed wheels and the fact it cannot self right if the ax is in the down position when flipped.
