Title: RammingSpeed's Showcase-age

Liparus.

Armour: 5mm steel
Flags are just for lulz.

Tell me if there's anything that can be improved on.

Needs moar razors if it is a popup.

Also use metal hinges for wedges

You probably don't need the flags

And build to the weight limit

go with 5mm plastic, techno wheels on npc fasts, replace the snapper wedges with metal hinges, replace the mag snapper with a bsg and put loads more weapons on. and replace the baseplate anchors with multiextenders if you really want the bits sticking out the side and top. i'd get rid of them though. and replace the battlepacks with 8 ant batteries and get a skirt hinge and put a titanium sheet (from the extras) onto there so it covers the front. and maybe put some halfsheets on the bottom.

and hi :P

Yes, quite obviously this is a popup.

It needs more drive, more razors, more weapon motors, no static weapons (unless you intend to make it a popup with a static weapon rack), a fitting battery setup...

Any better?

I kept the snapper wedges, as they can usually get under anything on DSL and the panels, because they're there to give the wheels protection.
Just so you know, the razors are on large beater bars (is that a good choice?).

Also Nar, could explain what you meant by fitting battery setup? Do I need to add more or take some away?

Count the amps your motors drain (it's in their description), that sum must be equal to what your batteries can output, excepted that all spin motors only need 10 amps, aka one ant battery.

By a fitting battery setup, he means to put in the right amount of batteries for the robot's power consumption.

At current state, you have 6 BattlePacks, which is equivalent to 15 ant batteries (the small orange ones). With your setup, you only need a minimum of 7 batteries: 1 for each drive motor and 2.5 for each BSG. This will give it enough power to go for the full 3 minute fight, though you may be a touch low on power towards the end. For that, you should probably have somewhere around 8 or 9 ant batteries in the robot.

Those numbers above, of course, are dependent on using your BSG's as flippers or not.

Yeah, the BSGs are used for self-righting.

You forgot to count the mags.
Title: Re: RammingSpeed's Showcase-age
Post by: COOLRUNNER87 on February 16, 2012, 02:43:51 PM
...wait a minute. Just noticed like a moron that you also have 2 Mag Snappers on there. Each Mag uses 4.5 batteries worth of power, which means in total you need 16 ant batteries to fully power the robot.

However, those Mag snappers are the single worst burst motor in the game. The battery consumption coupled with lack of power versus the BSG's essentially cripples it. You should downgrade those Mags to BSG's.

EDIT: I realized that, S_M. I don't know what I was looking at.
Title: Re: RammingSpeed's Showcase-age

Change Mag Snappers to BSG's, add moar razors and moar BSG's.

Interesting weapon setup you have here. I believe you just innovated in DSL popup weapon setups.

you have 6 BattlePacks, which is equivalent to 15 ant batteries (the small orange ones).

no actually 6 battlepacks are equivalent to nearly 17 ant batteries in power output.

And Ram, you need 16 ant batts currently to power your bot fully. But with 4 BSG's and 2WD, you would be able to go with 10-12.

What has changed:

I put two more halfsheets on the underbelly, edited the power setup so it was 3 amps off, put the popups closer together and replaced the mags for BSGs. Oh and I replaced the polycarb extenders for the wheelguards with titanium ones. How could I forget.

And why thank you, Naryar.

Now you need more weapons, less empty space in your chassis and frontal armor (try 30kg titanium sheets on skirt hinges).

Gave him some frontal armour, swapped the side razors for irons and downgraded the armour to 5mm titanium.

^^Cropping : doing it wrong. Don't enlarge your pics in paint. Make them as small as possible while still having all the useful information.

I would also put the razors closest to the ground as possible so they have more swing, and therefore more damage.

PseudoScorpion

10 ants, 2 Battlepacks
5mm Aluminium

So far untested in battle. My second go at making a trapper.

Try large beater bars instead of irons.
You also need stronger drive so you can quickly box rush spinners.

I wouldn't use those plows like that...

How should I use them then?
Title: Re: RammingSpeed's Showcase-age

Just use them as plows in the front... I don't know how to explain it in english but... Use them in 180 Degrees, If you know what I mean.

no the plows are fine, it might help if you angled them out more though.

anyway so long as those are small jx's then you can swap the battlepacks for 2/3 ants and replace the irons with beater bars as madman suggested

I would use Vlads or Tornados to get the bot invertible. And I think Aluminum extenders are fine for the weapon arms.

Changed from rubbers to tornados and swapped the steel extenders for aluminium ones.
Also, in this state, it can beat King Grog, Black storm 2.2 and Scrapyard Behemoth (just) from NAR AI.
Title: Re: RammingSpeed's Showcase-age

Not bad. I'd swap the Tornado wheels for Grannies as they have a higher fracture (? I always remember one of it's stats being slightly better and otherwise it's identical).

You can still send that in to replace your current bot, you can update before the splash is put up, which will like ly happen in either 5 or 6 days.

Bump.
Armour: Plastic 3mm
NPCs - Normal :(
I'm quite happy with this, even if it's untested in battle.
My only qualms with it are its crap armour, it's a little underweaponed and the beater bars graze the floor a bit.
I'm sure there's more, I just haven't found them yet. That's where you guys come in. ;)

Rubbers are bit weak in DSL, I recommend to use Vlads. Also You could use lighter extender work on the wedges.

Post by: NFX on March 25, 2012, 10:22:35 AM
The larger CB is actually lighter than the smaller one, so that'll save you a kilo of weight, which could make quite a difference. Something else you could do is make the back of the chassis narrower to have the NPC's right up beside each other. The ants could be in groups of three above each other at the front of the bot, that'll let you have a smaller chassis, which will save you a bit more weight.
Title: Re: RammingSpeed's Showcase-age
Post by: Mr. AS on March 25, 2012, 10:39:13 AM
if you rotate the npc's 180 degrees you can have them sticking out halfway out of the chassis then you can probably reduce chassis size

How's that?
Titainium extenders changed to alu ones, wheel placement altered, new Control Board and an extra ant battery.
So now it's a little bit overpowered, but it's better to be that than underpowered.

Shrink the chassis so the npc's stick out a bit (they're invincible anyway, might aswell use that) and swap the disks for hexplates and get more weapons, i doubt this is enough. and change the extenders on the wedges to flipper segments

or just swap to razors and get one in the middle of the disks

I don't like razors that much to be honest. They break too easily.
Title: Re: RammingSpeed's Showcase-age
Post by: NFX on March 25, 2012, 12:15:58 PM
They might break easily but they are a LOT more damaging. Hence why they're so popular with popups. The chances are you'll take off your opponent's weapons with razors a lot quicker than you will with beaters.

It's nice, but I feel like you can have more weight for "armour" around the sides (and maybe a larger chain on the weapon) if you use Metal Hinges instead of Burst Motors. I thought Burst Wedges were a Stock thing anyway?
Title: Re: RammingSpeed's Showcase-age
Post by: RammingSpeed on May 03, 2012, 11:09:45 AM
That's actually what I was thinking of doing, because the BSGs were supposed to help
the robot right itself when flipped, but they don't work so well.
Title: Re: RammingSpeed's Showcase-age
Post by: Celestial Panda on May 03, 2012, 11:18:29 AM
Well you can probably shrink the chassis such that the wheels are closer to the back of the robot. If they're big enough, it will be "invertible" and can drive around. If you drive into a wall the momentum might take you back over to the right side.
Or you can just have a BSG+Polycarb Extender Schrimech >>

But yes. A smaller chassis, a longer chain on the weapon (and maybe a longer weapon to match), and probably some protection on the front ramp. you have protection so disregard that.

Not bad. Metal Hinge Wedges are going to be very ineffective on a VS, I'd go for some angled stabilisers on ME's, personally. Perhaps swap for the S-shaped TWM motors rather than straight ones, they give you a wider stance, and you don't have to have the motors pointing behind the wheels.

Shrink chassis, get bigger or more weapons and tidy up your extender work.
Title: Re: RammingSpeed's Showcase-age
Post by: NFX on June 05, 2012, 12:00:00 PM
Cute. But can definitely be improved. Chassis can be shrunk a huge amount, and try not to overlap the wedges like that. If you click the bottom of the slider when you're selecting the bot height, you get the chassis lower than if you slide it down. That'll allow you to put more efficient wheels on, such as Hypnos. Maybe swap the Beater Bars for other weapons, perhaps LDS teeth or razors.
Title: Re: RammingSpeed's Showcase-age
Post by: Naryar on June 05, 2012, 02:48:13 PM
Bad. Really.

Tiny weapons and large wheels will leave your chassis and mobility exposed, the extenders are slightly exposed (although not much), extender work is doubtful and the chassis is far too large for your actual LW rammer needs.

Also using that much weight on a LW wedge for a rammer is probably overkill.
Title: Re: RammingSpeed's Showcase-age
Post by: Enigm@ on June 05, 2012, 03:05:56 PM
2/10 apply yourself.
First off, shrink the chassis. Use something even half-way pliable, not the current extenders you have. It doesn't need wedges, so remove the hinges. If you're going to use bigger wheels use something so it can be invertible; if not, go with hypnos. And lastly use small DSL teeth.

A bit better. You could definitely stand to shrink up the chassis a bit more, though, and always use an ME as opponsed to a BA like this. It does the same job for 1kg less, which can make a world of difference, especially at this weight level.
Title: Re: RammingSpeed's Showcase-age
Post by: ty4er on June 06, 2012, 04:53:13 AM
its better but still pretty bad.

replace the baseplate anchor for a multi extender, get something like plastic 3 or tite 1 and shrink the chassis a lot more (a 1x4 chassis would do) and then you can replace most of those lds teeth with razors

Title: Re: RammingSpeed's Showcase-age
Post by: NFX on June 07, 2012, 06:31:48 AM
It's an improvement, definitely. But if those are NPCFs, that's going to be very unstable. I'm also concerned it'll flip itself over on a hit. You can keep it as a LW, swap the LDS teeth for razors, and you could get a few more on. Make sure to angle a few upwards and downwards for increased stability. Rubbers could be traded for Hypnos as well, and that would leave you a bit of weight to perhaps get Tite 3 on there. It's a good baseline for improvement.

Not really, i'm afraid.
That's too much weight for one duel etek in my opinion, you could get away with 3 ants in this, 4 is you wanted the robot to run until the end of time. It looks like it could do with a wider wheelbase and a bigger reach on the support arms instead of the beaters. That chassis could be shrunk quite a bit by use for a multi extender+flipper segment combo and hopefully that would allow you to get a better weapon motor.

But apart from that...

Yeah, it does show youve been away some time.
My advice:
The multis look ducking awful, pole spikes are not that good, just invest in a heavy plow which is fairly OP, and you could probably just use side connectors to have multiple spikes, perhaps iron spikes.

Im very confused here though: What version of DSL made pole spikes even slightly good?

But in all seriousness this was seriously in no way a serious attempt so seriously take what you see with a serious pinch of serious salt. I'm serious.

Sorry, I can't be funny without swearing.

It isn't too bad, but it isn't the worst I've seen. It's probably better if you made the dustpan line up with the chassis or vise versa.

Title: Re: RammingSpeed's Showcase-age
Post by: Badnik96 on March 18, 2015, 01:21:26 PM
Instead of making the sides of the dustpan parts of the chassis, just make them skirts or DSL bars.. That should widen the dustpan enough so you can get bots in.

I like it except for that wedge at the front, it just looks awkward to me.
Title: Re: RammingSpeed's Showcase-age
Post by: RammingSpeed on March 21, 2015, 11:31:29 AM
It just needed one, and I thought I'd try something different other than the "skirt on hinge" usual stuff.
Title: Re: RammingSpeed's Showcase-age
Post by: Lemonism on March 21, 2015, 11:47:36 AM
So it needed the wedge for the weapon to work at all, or does the wedge just make it more effective? I know not everyone agrees with this, but the way I see it is that you shouldn't add things to an IRL bot just for the sake of effectiveness.
I can see where you're coming from, but I still think that it would be better off with a skirt hinge wedge that goes either side of the weapons rather than in between, or no wedge at all in order not to cover the skin.
Title: Re: RammingSpeed's Showcase-age
Post by: RammingSpeed on March 21, 2015, 11:52:59 AM
It works without the wedge, just ineffectively. I think you've got to balance aesthetics with effectiveness in IRL, or else there'd be no competitiveness in IRL tournaments. I still agree that how it looks is more important, though.

I'm not saying that, I'm just saying, unless you plan on entering a joke robot, that you should aim to make your robot somewhat competent, or there would be no reason for IRL tournaments to exist.

Anyway, imma stop before this turns into something bigger than what it really is.
Title: Re: RammingSpeed's Showcase-age
Post by: Badnik96 on March 21, 2015, 12:38:05 PM
Instead of a center wedge you should have two wedgelets on the chassis wedges. Same setup you have now, just shorter and better looking.

i would agree with a VS using axes in IRL if it looked cool enough.

This one however doesn't really look cool, and therefore using axes on a VS, as counterintuitive as it is, is pointless.

just so you know axes have normals => very bad for any kind of spinner.
