Hi, so after nerd3 reminded me that this game does exist and has a mod I decided to try out the game again.
Previously I gave up on DSL because I found it hard, but here I am now.
Also, I have been lurking this forum for quite a while now
I built 2 bots, both of them are pop-ups
Bot 1:
Armor: Titanium 1
It has some influence from Team Dragon's heavyweight and uses that angled panel thing as a flipper. There was also a metal hinge with a small wedge on the front, but I removed it and forgot to put it back on.
The metal sheet on top was supposed to stop hammers and that stuff and it sorta worked.
Speaking about the front, it was my attempt to basically stop damage coming. it worked most of the time.
Here's the inside:

It's uses two npc fasts and hypno wheels.
Bot 2:

Armor: Titanium 1
This one is much closer to the weight limit.
I basically looked at pon2n and said, "that's some good armor there"
so I basically did that to my bot.
It uses the emergency flipper instead of the small wedge because I found it more useful when it is bigger. It also still manages to get under bots. (some of the time, i could use some advice on wedging)
I also put that angled skirt up top because I thought it looked cool and I just had 3kg left to use.
Here's the inside:
(A red battery is missing here)
After removing the armor, the bot weights 699.9 kg.
This one is a 4WD: Hypno wheels are at the front and slipper bottom are at the back. Why did I use slipperbottoms? I thought it looked cool. :U
I was better on the extender work here. (Except for that back part)
The back part is just the extra wide ram. There is also some titanium sheets (or whatever you call it) on the bottom of the bot, since I noticed the back mostly took damage.
here's a feat I managed to do
(http://i.imgur.com/amBWRJf.png)
this one was much more easier than I thought, I just had to run under it 2 times and then it just died.
i also beat emergency with it.
so those are the bots i have made so far. Any critique or suggestions for it?
-
Firstly welcome to the forums.
Second, they are some decent robots for a newbie. They are definitely not generic in anyway and the extender work is pretty good.
I'm gonna shut up now because I'm not the right guy to give advice by any stretch of the imagination.
-
Firstly welcome to the forums.
Thanks!

Actually I have been playing this game for quite a while now.
I played ra2 since like 2 years ago but never really went into the mod intil now.
-
Woah, those are seriously cool looking bots. Nice work :)
If I remember right those JX bursts are not the best to use, BSGs are better, but I can't really think of anything else right now.

When I say newbie I meant newbie to the forums. We usually get people who have played for a while but still don't know the best things for their robot. You however seem to have some knowledge already which means you could become a strong builder in the future if you listen to the feedback that you get.

welcome to gtm
they look nice for first post bots. you might want to use bsg bursts. also ant batteries will save you some weight as far as i know. take out the huge orange one for that.

What can I do with the extra space in my chassis? Cut it down?
-
yes. you should make the chassis smaller and use the weight you have left on weapons and/or armor
-
...also, are you guys sure this bsg motor is good? It looks flimsy and slow when I use it.
I mean, it's great for my flipper, but im not too sure about the weapon part
edit: I don't know, I tried using a different motor and it does the same thing too after I looked at both of them closely, must be because of the sound.
-
Welcome to GTM fellow Cave Story player! :D
You can get rid of the rear protection, as all AI bots don't attack the back. With the extra weight you can get some more front armor, those shell panels won't last long against most of today's standard bots.
-

One things I noticed is that some bots don't even use armor, they just use a load of weapons all around.
another edit: but anyways those bsgs retract really slowly whenever I fire the burst. Sometimes they just stay there. Could be because of the weight of the steel extenders and razors?
-
they need some power. put in some more ants
-
I made a third version of Electric Ladyland
(http://i.imgur.com/j0op3fH.png)
still uses titanium 1 armor
The chassis is much more smaller and uses the bsg motors.
On the front outside is a flail, so if my wedge falls off, i can become a shell spinner... lol. (But by then I would have already lost the match.) It's great for ramming too.
-
I like the idea behind the flails, but those motors aren't BSGs dude :P
BSGs are the green burst motors.
-

oh haha, well i fixed that now.
not related to the motors, I realized that the bot really sucks at self-righting
the second bot didnt suck at doing that, but the third one does and I have no idea how to fix it
-
I made yet another pop up; i tried making different stuff but they all failed
(http://i.imgur.com/IvvWOZn.png)
the extender work is too heavy, considering the fact that only 1% of it is exposed
-
Having those razors so high up won't do you any good. Also the back razors cutting through the CB and the other BSGs isn't realistic and thus is illegal in normal DSL building. Though you have something good going here. Oh and one more thing, I recomend for your wedge that you use an 80cm titanium sheet on a metal hinge as it will be more effective.
-
I think the problem here is that you're trying to make your popup too compact. Popups actually benefit from being very large. Try having a thin |_| chassis shape.
-
what everyone else said and astroflights for drive are never good in the heavyweight class.
-
These are some cool bots. I like the spinner shell as armor. Might not be the strongest option (actually it definitely isn't), but it looks great.
-
Thanks for advice guys.
I have a question about the metal hinge, when i try to move it, it havoks off into oblivion
after the hinge returns to orbit, moving the slider around makes it do nothing
i guess it's supposed to be like that?
-
The metal hinge isn't meant to be moved, just put it on your bot, attach a skirt to it and you're good to go.
-
Hi guys, I tried something different:
armor it titanium 5
underweight because i have no idea what to put
The wedges are great. I've been trying to use wedges that aren't emergency's, but i cant.
however, the reach of the weapons is ok

The hammers cut through the belt
-
Yeah, in any type of DSL building it's not really allowed to have things cutting through things like motors, batteries, wheels etc, so those hammers that cut through the belt wouldn't be allowed in a tournament. You could always try scaling your design down to MW and using a disc with teeth rather than hammers.
-
sort of poorly executed but then again you're new.
Potentially could be very nice because flipper/VS is intredasting and never done D: not much people build hybrids
so here's my advice:
-don't fool around with different wheel sizes on the same bot unless the bot design really requires it. In your case it doesn't. (See: The Troll)
-Emergency wedges are... well... use small wedges, they're better
-4WD is unnecessary on a MW, just use NPC/NPC fast and 2 grippy wheels.
-make sure your VS can selfright using the VS (not the flipper obviously)
i'll watch your showcase and see how it develops, it's nice to see newbies building hybrids.

Where do I find "The Troll", i tried searching for it and it just led me back to this.

Made a new hybrid bot (Hammer and SnS)
uses alu 1
inside are npc fasts, an orange battery, and a battlepack
60kg sledgehammer
the front is surprisingly durable
hammer is extremely powerful, but exposed
has some problems self-righting
edit:
made some changes; gave it a cooler name
(http://i.imgur.com/aOOeque.png)
spins really fast now
-
is this for narys hybrid tourney
-
is this for narys hybrid tourney
nah, nar said not much people make hybrids so i guess i should do it
who knows, i might still enter
-
well twacker/hammer hybrid is conflicting
first the hammer needs to face the bot, but the bot has to spin for the tail to work
a good hybrid would be VS/HS or something like a volleyball flipper (though it would be questionable) and perhaps a side hammer/dustpan
-
It was just some wacky idea I made in about 10 minutes
I tried rammer and side hammer, but i couldn't make them effective, i'll try doing that again.
-
It is very nice to see newbies building hybrids... but i'm afraid it wouldn't be good enough for the tournament. Both weapon systems don't synergize at all, and it would get destroyed far too easily.
Nor would I allow that sort of hybrid unless it is actually made combat-worthy because hammer/SnS hybrid is pretty awful in battle TBH.
What SHIELD said, really.
-
the systems don't really synergize, but it beats most mw dsl stock bots either way
made a new bot (Hammer/HS Drum)
titanium 1
this one can self-right
uses perm 80 el

i like how it looks but the swords go through the disc which is a shame
although a vertical drum is an interesting idea
i assume it self right using the swords though
if you moved the bsg above the npc motors and flipped its angle around it could still (most likely) self right and wouldnt have interflicting parts
-
Um that black disc is static, Chicken. It's perfectly realistic.
It's definitely unique but I cant see it doing that well in combat sadly.

But the hammers slice a section of the disc off, and hence a shell panel on each side ;)

What would make this an effective hybrid:
Remove the hammer and cover the shell panels with spikes to make a rammer/SnS hybrid. It would look cool, it's fast enough to be a good rammer, and the spikes would still be effective when it was spinning. There is AI to make it act like both and not just an SnS. (Thwack3.py--which I should really include in my AIessentials pack.)

yes but doesnt the swords moving through the discs and panels make it unrealistic if not i have a lot of building to do if so then the bsg could be moved

i tested it out against sabertooth and samuari and i managed to kill them easily
but then i got to red alert and died
edit:
so i did a little testing with the ingame tourneys and i found out it sucks againsts hs's
-
A little prototype that i never really finished because i stopped playing for a bit:
A pop-up(?) and vertical spinner hybrid.
Armor is 3mm steel? Idk
Destroys things amazingly
one problem though, it's not invertible nor can it self right.
the bsg was intended to make it self right but all it really does is hilariously saw people behind it
An even older version, destroying shogun using only its poppers
(http://i.imgur.com/JufUUiE.png)
-
looks messy and wouldnt be allowed in irl
and probably would do bad in dsl-s
the original version looks better in my opinion
-
Definitely interesting. Mount your skirt hinge on the baseplate instead of raising it that high, that'll give it more wedginess. You can put a second skirt hinge where the current one is so the popup weapons work properly.
What's with the BSG next to the Perm?

ah, didn't see that. So it's basically a waste of weight then.

hybrids!
