Title: Olister92's DSL showcase
Post by: Olister92 on December 18, 2017, 02:26:34 PM
I've been playing RA2 few a little while now and I've finally got some bots worth showing (i think!)

this is Moot Point, it has alu 3 armour

Interesting, however it'd be more helpful if you were to show the insides. However I will say it's a solid design looking at it

here you go, as you can sort of see its a front hinged flipper

Front hinger AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!
Why the 45 degree ange on the left wedge? That's atleast 1kg less iirc

Few things.
1. the wedges, I recommend you use the skirt or metal hinge piece, found in the extenders tabs, this will certainly increase the effectiveness of the wedge.
2. I think you should try to make it as compact as possible, this would allow you to add better armour or add plates of armour.
3. The front armour plate should be wider I feel, this would allow you to armour better against spinners.
4. Flat sides. I changing this to a more angle side would do 2 things, deflect spinners better and not allow you to get stuck on it's side which I see you've tried to counter with the extenders.

It's certainly a good bot, just a few refinements and it'll be top tier

because I'm blind basically

I think was fiddling round with where to put extenders and stuff and forget to remove it, could be anything with me though  :dumb)

thanks for the advise, I haven't given it too much testing but I agree a half decent spinner would kill it at the moment

i'll attempt to make some adjustments to it (tomorrow hopefully)

correct me if i happen to be wrong, but the flipper having it's hinge set somewhat high up the wedge could reduce it's flipping ability than if you set the hinge further down the wedge, again, this is just a theory but if you have spare weight i suggest you try screwing around with that and see if it has any effects

it is as low as it can get (the screenshots aren't brilliant I'm still figuring everything out on here!) it just clips through a little bit as it doesn't look great at the moment. I didn't realise how much space I actually wasted until I saw it on here!

But ty for the advice, I'll have a little go at improving it tonight so watch this space as they say!

Moot Point 2

It now has Alu 5 armour, a wedge attached to a metal hinge, sloped chassis and it's slightly more compact (I think)

(https://i.imgur.com/7g5izdb.jpg) (https://i.imgur.com/Umd9G0d.jpg)

I don't really like how the wheels stick out a bit now but I think overall a slicker design

I made a lightweight a while ago but I'm probably going to do a full overhaul on it as I've wasted a f*** tonne of space.
Meet 'Stranger Thing' briefly before I change it.

Any advice before I start?

i like the design of the flipper arm. once you get chassis management down and learn how to skin i think you'll be pretty good

As promised Stranger Thing 2

(https://i.imgur.com/HgRHe72.jpg) an action shot for a change (https://i.imgur.com/3vTmCOE.jpg) its guts

(https://i.imgur.com/Baew9UG.jpg) the flipper looks a bit different now, I had to attach it like that to make it flush with the chassis. I kind of like it even though it's a bit unconventional and it self rights really well now.

It's now more compact, has Alu 5 so it's a bit stronger against those pesky spinners and I changed the piston as i didn't feel the need for the Storm burst on a lightweight and I could put the extra weigh on armour.

I doubt I'll skin this one as it's on old idea and I can't think of what would look cool on it. I'm open for suggestions if anyone has any. Also I've not learned how to skin yet because, well, laziness really  :dumb)

My next bot I've got to show will not be a flipper  it will be a HS but I'll wait for a bit of feedback from this before I upload another bot
Title: Re: Olister92's DSL showcase

aren't flippers better if they are wide, and does not a thin, roughly V-shaped wedge make you more vulnerable to being punted aside by HS, along with having a less wide weapon and hence less opportunities for firing ?

saving weight is important and all that, but one should not use it as it's only mantra
Title: Re: Olister92's DSL showcase

I see your point, I guess every design has pros and cons.

I've got an idea for a LW with a wider flipper but I'm away a few days for Christmas so I wont get a change to make it till I get back.

I appreciate the advise though.

Moving onto something different here a HS, I has 3mm Titanium armour I think...

I called it Warmonger EVO

(https://i.imgur.com/fUaHoSU.jpg) (https://i.imgur.com/ojllkbu.jpg)

It's my first attempt a making an IRL style frame, it may not be the best work out there but I'm really pleased at how it turned out!

Maybe I should change it's name to Deadly Duck!

either way it needs as a complete overhaul as the the frame and disk fall off if anyone sneezes near it.

that's what you get for using alu extenders I guess, so maybe Sitting Duck would be a more appropriate name!

it looks cool, but yeah that disc is going to be insanely fragile on a middleweight. if you took the dsl discs out of the pussycat wheels and shrunk the chassis a little bit, you'd have more than enough weight for a tougher disc.

I'll try that with the next version of it.

Also I forgot to mention the weapon motor is a Perm 80, will this be enough for a MW?

I made a few changes, the frame is a lot more simple now and made from titanium. I need to spend some time to get it to line up exactly.
With the weight I saved I could put a solid disk on with large Typhoon teeth (I think I had small before) and added a steel slab at the back for a bit of protection. Also changed to T-minus wheels for the better HP and control without loosing noticeable speed.

I've another bot show you all, this time it's an axe bot with Alu 3 armour and all the sheets are steel.

It's my first attempt at making a CW, I'm reasonably pleased with it apart from a few issues

I call it 'Art of Seduction'

(https://i.imgur.com/wM9UIQa.jpg) admittedly this one is in dire need of a skin but I'll get to that...

(https://i.imgur.com/sI1h4fb.jpg) (https://i.imgur.com/qSDvR9d.jpg) it's insides

this is the problem with it (sorry for terrible quality)(https://i.imgur.com/mMNPoSg.jpg) I'm gunna go ahead and assume this stops it from being IRl. I've tried fiddling around but can't find a solution to the problem, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Once I've solved the issues I'll BFE the burst motor and do a skin but I'm too frustrated at the moment!

Personally i don't see a problem with the wheel intersection, seeing as in real life that block wouldnt be there at all

Looks pretty good, it just needs a skin

So I made this thing really quickly just as a mess around. I had no idea 2 short burst motors with a polycarb sheet would be enough to lift the car a few feet off the ground.

I'm not looking for an feedback on this one, but it is welcome, I just wanted to show it because this is where my comprehension of how the game works is starting to come to together. A light bulb moment if you will!

you can double or even quadruple the size of the default skin template when you start a skin to make it higher-resolution.

I think I doubled it to make it easier to see then changed it back as I wasn't sure what it would do if I left it, I'll take this on board for next time

So I beefed Art of Seduction up a but to be a HW for GTM CS2 by:
adding more batteries
changing the wheels the backlash wheels
Increasing the armour to Plastic 10

after submitting it and feeling proud of myself I realised I could add a tail to stop it 'jumping' so much

It's still woefully underweight even with the tail but whats done is done

So I made a kind of generic drum spinner.
10 plastic armour, can't self right and the drum doesn't seem to hit that well or do as much damage as I though. It gets stuck a lot and runs out of battery towards the end of most fights... apart from that it's great

Any thoughts on how to address any of these issues would be great!

I would Use flat motors for the weapon,I would also make him inverted which you could do by making the body smaller.

There are many things that need improving on this design.
1. Not invertable/no shrimech - Depending on how you'd like to set it up, I'd look at real life drums or egg beaters. Hogoblin, Mandii & Tourus Maximus are examples.
2. The body itself can use a re-shape, the wheels sticking out like that looks quite frankly ugly, not only that I also believe that you can certainly make the chassis more compact. This will also give you extra weight to armour up the chassis
3. The drum - the beaters are a waste of weight, they look as though they won't hit anything, whilst I like the effect you're going for with the teeth I recommend using extenders as they keep the weight down. Either that or just use beaters.
4. Wedges - you will not out wedge anything. And they look horrible due to the fact they seem rather stuck on and have no flow to the machine. To create an effective wedge you want to hinge the wedge using the metal hinge or skirt hinge
5. Flatmotors - These motors are the best for creating a drum, found in the Cheatbot2 menu (rename your bot cheatbot2 to access it
6. Wider - Drums are effective due to the large frontal area that they cover. Make yours do that

Recommendations in general:
Space management - It appears you have design the chassis first then placed your components in. I would consider redesigning the bot the other way round. Really think about how you want the bot to perform and the components you'll be using before you start creating.
Look at some other builders bots for good ideas - Lurking is great to gain solutions and ideas for your bots, KillerTurtleG and Virus Bomb have both made beautiful Drum bots that I would highly recommend taking a look at.
Using panels - Try to protect the chassis as much as you can, using plates and extender, this can get a bit advanced but I recommend trying to get to grips with it. Start off by making front wedges with the panels and then go from there.

The axe bot - Whilst I like it, I believe there are a few improvements to be made, I would recommend using a geared beta, it would really give a big punch to the weapon. The tail can also be improved, try to get it more in flow with the body. But overall not a bad attempt.

Hope I could provide some help, sorry if the long block of text seemed overwhelming

Certainly nice, and much improved. But there are few more things you can do with it. 1. If you are going to make it a CW (Cruiserweight, 600kg) I would recommend adding some top and bottom armour and protect the flat motors, just use up the 15kg left, if you wanna go for the full 800kg HW, maybe make it 4WD, along with the other suggestions, giving the drum more surface area by making it wider.

Greatly improved I must say, keep it up

While I ponder how best the give Lynx a little improvement I made a robot I've had an idea for a while.
The name says is all really
(https://i.imgur.com/jyYVnid.jpg) because f**k spinners! (https://i.imgur.com/rZUVGpR.jpg) i ran out of room and weight to tidy up the back
(https://i.imgur.com/rwhF1BL.jpg) pretty simple insides

Plastic 10 armour,2x medium pistons, doubled up medium colson wheels, steel sides with a titanium scoop, 4x slim bodies

It isn't hugely fast and doesn't through bots miles but it's durable which was the whole point

Thoughts?

You've answered one problem yourself. It's slow, on top of this, you'll need more batteries. For weight, Im guessing you are using all Steel armour, you can probs turn the sides down to Titanium if they aren't.

4WD Slimbody drive is pretty bad, get some NPC or NPC-F 2WD in there, and grippier wheels. Also as said by Hoppin, it doesn't have enough batteries. use the weight freed by the former to add more batteries.

Slow and tough doesn't really work if you can't get under your opponent effectively, and fast and tough is superior anyways.

After putting about 6 hours work into this I finally came up with Spinna Killa 2. 5 and a half hours went out into making the scoop not being too heavy that it was able to self right OK. This started out as a kind fun design to deflect spinners but turned into headache so this was the best I could do and I'm done with this design. After finishing this I went to the pub for a well deserved drink!  Tita 3 i think, 797. KG or something I just don't care anymore

Rather nice, love the scoop style you've gone with something I'd like to use myself at some point. Bit boxing but I think that's fine. I think if you can blend the poly a bit better it'd look rather nice.

Keep it up man, doing great

Its definitely an idea that has a lot of potential, ie Behemoth, it just needs a better builder than what I am now to make it top notch, either way i'll put it on the bot exchange as basis

I couldn't find away of making it invertable so I just let it flip itself back over, It's a bit of an unreliable system. Other than that reasonably happy with the result. And I've always wanted to put nightmare teeth on a drum.

I always wanted to make an Eruption clone and after watching the UK vs RoW RW special I wanted to make a Weber clone.
So I made a kind of hybrid between the two.

aluminium flipper extenders with titanium wedges

Not a fan of the wheels poking out or the yellow extenders connecting the flipper arms. Other than that, it's alright i guess. Needs a good skin.

This pretty much sums up the majority of my robots I think. The problem is I use MS paint when I skin purely because it's quick and easy. I should get a proper image editing programme but with working full time and other IRL things I just can't find the time to learn how to use a new programme really, which is a real shame because I find RA2 is something that you get more out if you put more in but I can't quite find the time.
I appreciate the advise as always!

titanium wedges
40x100 polycarb sheet to protect the bottom

while everyone is getting excited about GTMCS I made a beetle weight, and have found him delightfully charming and I don't know why
(https://i.imgur.com/86n7NMT.jpg)(https://i.imgur.com/TcHad7c.jpg)
Plastic 3 armour, short piston, aluminium flipper, slim body motors, micro wheels one red battery
 (https://i.imgur.com/WKYDnVF.jpg) he's stuck (https://i.imgur.com/e2Ip9ph.jpg) he's free

I liked him so much I gave him a little skin, kinda looks like arse though

I made improvements to two of my bots in my series of 'naming robots after cats because I like cats OK!'
Big Cat is now lower due to changing the angle of the wedges and can run invertable by moving the drive motors back and higher up and adding robot X casters (or should that be catsters haha... just me then) also changed the wheel protection to black to make it look meaner.

Lynx now has protection for the flat motors, I thought it might ruin the aesthetics but I kinda managed to style it out so it doesn't look like complete arse on a bicycle.

Apologies in advance for the double post but my last one about minor upgrades to robots was kinda boring so I see why it got no responses!

I finally made an extender bot and I'm thrilled to bits with the result even if it is a bit messy in places

(https://i.imgur.com/MLcMzcH.jpg) (https://i.imgur.com/EUwg9rv.jpg) (https://i.imgur.com/mjkMjQa.jpg)
Tit 5 armour, titanium panels and flippers, steel wedges on the flippers. NPC fast drive, ignore the pussycat wheels it now has N-teks. icanged them as I had weight left to use. 3x medium pistons which gives the weapon a reasonable kick!

And yes it took lots of inspiration for Hoppins bot Dave 2

what do we think guys?

Looks good. I'd personally go for smaller wheels, like 2 vlads so you get similar width to the n12s but a smaller diameter, but otherwise looks pretty neat, especially for a first extenderbot.
Title: Re: Olister92's DSL showcase

Great for a first attempt. However I recommend giving the bot armour underneath to avoid it getting gutripped.  You might have to make it smaller to get some extra weight to armiur to bottom of the bot. To do this you cam more the pistons closer together making it more narrower but still effective and correct me if Im wrong but I only see 2 black bats which wont be enough

it has 4 black bats, sorry I forgot to mention I crammed another two in, I'll have a look at the bottom armour but its tough to get it any narrower due to the with of the drive motors more than anything, i'll try and address that but it'll need almost a full rebuild -sighs- I appreciate the advise as always

tried vlads but it was slow and the wedge isn't flush to the ground unfortunately (https://i.imgur.com/BCjZ3nE.jpg)
Taz bots however are perfect, thanks for the advice of sorts!  (https://i.imgur.com/KTLOQKu.jpg)

Edit - it has bottom armour but it might be a bit lacklustre, I made the wedges a bit longer and gold

What you could do for the Axe bot is square it up, widening would give it a wider wheel base and thus you'd be able to turn better.
As for the drum spinner, it's nice, I'll be it pretty safe and standard.

If you can find a way to clean up the rear, and the very front edge of the wedge this would be top notch. You can probably ditch one of the battlepacks as VDMA bursts use a lot less power than the front hinge ones which should give you some weight to play with. I'd also switch the shiny wheels to vlads too even though they're marginally heavier just for looks.

Either that or just go to a CW or HW and beef up just about everything :D

I really like the look of the Apolloish one. You're getting better pretty much everyday. Meanwhile, I'm barely getting any better, lol. My only suggestions would be to make the chassis white (the red really stands out) and make the flipper arm thicker if possible.

Hey that's really cool. You can probably have 2 less black bats. I also recommend if it's not already that you hinge the prongs at the front. And maybe put the weapon out further for more reach. Nice job man

Thanks man  :thumbup

Mechavore tore the whole front corner, including one of the drums, with one attack! so I managed to add some armour in and sneak inside the weight limit. Detracts from the aesthetics a bit but is necessary

I like everything about it other than the weird gap in-between the flipper and sides. I also think that the darker red may make it look more appealing.

Internals are identical to Richter, see up the page a bit. Also bad luck in Orc Wars, Gamma Ray was doing real well until AI screwed you over I would've liked to see it in the real completion. I hope you enter it into something else :)

I'm 99% sure I used the Dark Red panels, Maybe I could have used Maroon or something. I don't really like the gap either but I ran out of weigh and I'm pretty inept

Thanks both :) surprisingly it doesn't hit the floor, I thinks its due to the size of wheels and the weight at the back of the robot which is where I forgot to mention a black battery and the control unit is stored

They are cheatbot. I'm guessing you downloaded avalanche's version of the game which Mr AS's balance patch pre installed which makes a bunch of cheatbot components available by default.

That is exactly what I did and I had no idea that was the case! thanks for letting me know :)

On a different note here is another one of my potential RG entries for the CW division. Taurpedo 2
Ditched the giant bar as it was a bit fragile and gimmicky. Not many people seem to use these style discs (not sure what their name is) but the 100cm is perfect size and fits the aesthetics of this robot well

The skin is really nice, the weapon support looks good, and the weapon looks deadly, all in all a really cool VS! Makes me disappointed in Babaulti .

The only negative thing I can see is that it might get stuck on its sides (although that’s pretty unlikely).

Babulti is a good bot, it has a more complex design which can be a bit harder to pull off but I'd say you managed it :)
As for getting stuck on its side, it does very occasionally but the disc generates fair amount of gyro which usually stops that from happening

Still a CW at 596.something KG, now with 4wd, steel teeth on small drums, a Perm 80 to drive the weapon and Steel 5 armour. It's now faster, more stable and more deadly with a slight sacrifice on chassis armour.
Thoughts are welcome as per usual

Title: Re: Olister92's DSL showcase
Post by: Hoppin on March 13, 2018, 04:18:12 PM
Maybe something like this:

As for the bot itself. I think what you could do if you can find the weight is use small typhoon teeth, you can place them along an extender then cover the extender with drums. This is what Doots bot Mastidon uses and it's pretty effective.

I personally feel you could use 2 flat motors for the drum, this would be it cleaner but still be quite powerful.
And finally upgrading the back drive to tmwrs if you can. This might require you to drop the chassis armour. If you do I'd recommend Ti5 as it's pretty good for HWs

Overall I really like the direction you've taken Lynx. this gives it much more of a character and a difference from the standard drum bot. Best thing is just to refine it further. Keep it up

I like it a whole lot. I like how it deviates from the run of the mill drumbot design without going over the top or trying to cram too much in to the point it looks messy. Your best build so far I'd say. Nothing negative to say about it.

Happy with how it turned out, apart from the wheels I might have to do some fiddling with that

Only a medium so it's not that powerful, it can OOTA stuff but it has to get them at the right angle right next to the wall

I love it, I just think it needs a wider wedge. Maybe you could lose some of the front extenders to get some weight for that

Shown on discord earlier but here is Gold Standard 2.
(https://i.imgur.com/VbVnP8Q.jpg) (https://i.imgur.com/9Ms4g3P.jpg)
Talking points are:
It's a lot thinner
Has 2 Wide Medium VDMA's so it's more powerful than before
Pussycat Wheels instead of Tazbots so speed is basically the same
More protection for said wheels

Title: Re: Olister92's DSL showcase
Post by: Badger on April 12, 2018, 01:50:32 AM
Glad I could help :)

I'm a sucker for bots like this, where the internals are compact and you can see them though poly panels. Reminds me of my Scout remake (https://gametechmods.com/forums/dsl-tc-showcases/badger's-bots-(dsl-showcase)/msg717688/#msg717688)

As for advice, maybe BFE the panels slightly so they line up? The top panel is overlapping on the left and not reaching quite far enough on the right. If you don't know how to BFE, Craig made a great guide. (https://gametechmods.com/forums/tutorials-and-tips/guide-to-the-bot-file-(re-up)/) You'll want to change the XYZ location. 0.1 is exactly the same as a 10cm extender :)

Post by: Olister92 on April 12, 2018, 11:54:04 AM
Thanks for the advice Badger but I actually just placed the panel using the wrong AP

also here's Silver Lining 2

(https://i.imgur.com/VacIFDG.png) (https://i.imgur.com/IUmcjdw.png)

It has a Wide Medium VDMA now and smaller wheels so its lower and has more flip power

Polycarb looks green as I had the bot on a light green background and I had the tolerances a bit wrong XD
Title: Re: Olister92's DSL showcase
Post by: Badger on April 12, 2018, 12:08:04 PM
Neat, reminds me a little of that chinese flipper from KoB S1. How does the single VDMA do in battles, is it powerful enough? I really like how it widens as you go down the wedge.

Tip for removing the green tinge from the polycarb panels; you can select the greenish bits in paint.net using the magic wand tool at a lower tolerance, and re-use color reaper at a lower tolerance, as it will only apply to your selection (in this case the green bits).

A HW 4wd Flipper - Insane Berserker
(https://i.imgur.com/15yv7VK.png) (https://i.imgur.com/qovdjf2.png)

Titanium sides and wedge Polycarb top, aluminium bottom plate
Slim wheels
TWMR drives
3 medium VDMAs with T-Minus arms
4 black batteries
Thats about it I think
Title: Re: Olister92's DSL showcase
Post by: Reier on April 19, 2018, 04:31:54 PM
it's fine enough but I wish that the flipping arm either stuck out further to avoid clipping with the green panel or you figured out a way to get some green on front of the flipper itself. other than that it's solid

I keep forgetting to mention it's invertable, as it's a 4 bar lifter not a traditional flipper, I had issues getting it to self right reliably. I will make an Inhaler 2 at some point so I'll have a look at getting it self right, TY for the advice

Jilted Lover - The bot itself looks really solid, well constructed front, sides and rear. My main concerns are how well it self rights, Im sure it's fine, but just based off looks Im not exactly sure. The other concern is how to the polycarb would withstand vertical spinners/axes when hit. But I still really like it and am sure the points of concern are solved for or don't exist.

Inhaler - Great name, great bot. The colsons you've added really make it look much sleeker and I love the floor hugger wedgelets you have. How strong is the front side to allow for better durability against HSs tho?

Insane Beserker - I think learning BFE would be a great idea to help with the compactness of the bot, allowing for better armour on the bottom. That and I believe 2 bursts would be substantial enough for flipper power whilst allowing you to save and burst, arm and battery. Again allowing you to spend more weight on drive or armour.
Looking great, best bots by far <3

Looking star. Tho I would suggest that you could compact it even further from front to back, and I'd see if theres a possibility of using 4 npcfasts, probably using double stacked rubbers for them thicc wheels . Finally I'd look into giving the sides some curvature, this would make it look so nice imo.

Things that I kept from the first version:
Chassis with Alu 5 armour
Steel front wedge and titanium sides
Lightning spikes at the rear
and 4x TWMR drive Motors

Things I've changed:
The 4 bar set up as it was kind of naff, so I've gone for a 2x Wide Medium VDMA rear hinge flipper
Colson wheels, as they give sod all grip, and replaced them with growlers.
