HS? =P
Underweaponed. Can we see the insides too? And please make your pics .pngs or .jpgs, and make it show up in this window.

Not enough weapons.

I bet the chassis is too large as well.

Well, it's actually alright. Sub-par, but a good starting point.

Ballasts are weight lost, you know.

But if I leave them out, the bot goes gyro dancing (I believe that is the term).

Don't waste weight with the ballasts - use it somewhere else.

LW: Unrealistic. The weapons don't do any damage lke that, you have to rotate them 90 degrees.

Tsunami: Could be a lot better, sorry. The caster armor isn't doing a lot here.

But they definitely aren't bad. Keep building, you'll get better in no time.

Now, for the comments:

Your HW popup needs Mags to be effective. And instead of using gripless Taz wheels, use Technos instead. Get rid of the side ramplates to get the weight.

Your BW's not realistic. :P

Fixed.

For a LW, you should use mags or NPCs (if NPCFs, even better though I think it's overkill).

To get the weight, lower the chassis height and attach the CB horizontally instead. Swap irons for razors and use Vlads (rubbers have the same grip as shinies).

O_O??? I always thought Slims were fine, mags are good too, but NPCs is going a bit overboard. Still, not my choice, just choose what seems best.

Follow what Pwn said 'bout the razors & Vlads, maybe use hypnos also.

And that means weapons without normals do damage no matter how they hit... generally means more damage, so better.

The only thing(s) wrong with the bot is that it is hard it outwedge other wedges. Also, the weapons have a short range.

use metal hinges for the wedge.
Title: Re: Natef's Showcase
Post by: trumpetguy on February 10, 2010, 09:10:03 PM
He can stick with that wedge, depending on a few factors: how heavy are the wedges, how much degrees is the hinge, and etc. Just look a HazCon, skirt hinge wedges can be effective if done right.

Underpowered, yet looks effective for a DSL2.1 bot. You do need better wedges, hmmm. I say take the skirt hinges out... use Flipper segments+ small wedges. Take away the 2 1/2 sheets and add a static full one. That should protect it and make it more effective.

I'm aware that skirt hinge wedges can be good, I have some bots with skirt hinge wedges that can get under metal hinges. Unless I read his post wrong, he's saying that his bot has a hard time outwedging other bots, which probably means that the wedges suck.

Shorten the chassis, perhaps give it a slope of some sort, so you can attach a 30kg tite sheet to a 45-degree anchor, and use metal hinge wedges. Also, moar ants.

Either do what Linck said, either just switch to another tab quickly after attaching the metal hinge.

Definitely upgrade to a metal hinge wedge.  You can use just a BSG on this as well, but 6 razors is kinda overkill.  You could put Hypno wheels on this as well, but then it might be too generic.

Then again: efficiency > originality

Metal skirts on a lightweight extender work (like a skirt hinge)

Or you might be able to use that complete game breaker (I very much feel like reducing it's hitpoints in NAR AI) that is the Firestorm flipper, but if you do you might want change your paintjob to a red/yellow one else it's gong to be ugly.

I shrank the chassis and got rid of one battery. I tried using aluminum skirts on a hinge as armor. That failed, so I took them off and added a firestorm Flipper. The only trouble is it can't outwedge other robots, so I replaced the hinges with skirt hinges, and made the skirts longer, but there is still some weight left.

Those extenders look rather exposed.  You should use something more durable--perhaps a hex plate with 3 razors?  Increase durability and damage at the same time.  You might be able to scoot the BSG over a bit to make it symmetrical too.

Nice bot, the only other problem is that it's too skinny, but I don't see anything you can do about that.  And a metal hinge wedge is great if you have weight for it, depending on whether your goal is more to beat other wedges, or to beat non-wedges.

The wedges could be better.  Here's an idea:

Swap that hex plate you have for the weapons for a couple of polycarbonate extenders.  This should give you enough weight for angled poly skirt wedges.  Of course they'll still be weak but still better than what you have now.

Swap out the rubbers for some lower wheels for ground clearance (wide ants probably)

I disagree, that would leave the extenders more exposed. I'd try and get Mini wheels on there, rather than Ants.

Title: Re: Natef's DSL Showcase

A skirt hinge with an al skirt would suffice for BW, then you could possibly armour the front with something else.

I also think the drive is slightly overkill, and unless you have a ninja battery in there somewhere, it's also underpowered.

Might just be repetitive strain injury.

If you want to use the PA skirt as a wedge, though, swap it for a 40cm poly skirt. Lighter, and much, much wedgier. If you want to use it as a stabiliser, though, then retract the chassis, mount it on an ME, and try to get an extra battery in there. Also swap for the Blue CB for extra weight, you're 2.2kg overweight as it is.

Title: Re: Natef's DSL Showcase

You get a lot more features with GIMP, and it's a free piece of software. Much like Paint.NET, I find PDN easier to use, though, than GIMP.

There are several things that can be done to improve this bot. Largely the unrealistic weapon, the disc cuts directly through the drive belt on the Perm. The extender work is also a complete mess, along with the redundant wedges. You should have a bit more weaponry as well, if you tidy up the extenders, maybe attach everything directly to ME's, that'll save you a LOT of weight for weaponry.

If you select an area of the picture, then select Ctrl + Shift + X, it crops the image to your selection.

Similar problems to the last bot, though. Clean up your extender work, and maybe swap the weapon TWM for a Piglet. Perhaps lose the central beater add some DS teeth with the saved weight, that'll help with gutripping stuff.

It's IRL, expect a little bit of inefficiency. Flipper could be moved further back, perhaps if you turned the judge burst the other way round, to get the axle closer to the back of the bot. That should help the side panel line up with the front wedge a bit better.

It probably doesn't need 4WD, also flipper segments have only 1000 hps so making the whole flipper out of them alone might not be such a good idea. Perhaps you could house the flipper assembly in the chassis and use a component for the exposed part of the flipper.

at least you seem to be out of that slump that you were in, but do the poly sheets serve any purpose ? and you might want to get axle support for the weapon, like on skidmark

I see no cloning...

You are really bad at taking cool pictures of your bots. While yes a top down is nice to see the insides, I can barely tell what else the bot is.

The best angles are a little above ground level and about 20-45 degrees off the front of the bot. Preferably so we can see both the front and the sides and get an idea of what the bot looks like. It's also pretty cool when you pose bots in an arena like I do. Just take a little more time on the presentation of the bots and your showcase will get more positive comments. Trust me.

Mechavore disc is perfect but the extenders need work.  It will look MUCH better if you make the chassis wider and put extenders coming directly off the corners, instead of that wonky flipper segment setup you have there.  You certainly have weight for a wider chassis.

Ideal setup is four extenders, a lower and an upper set.

One 400-point hit and your weapon motor is gone. I would downgrade the drive to Astros (you might have to resize the chassis) and get some motor protection.

Looking pretty good, but doesn't the weapon scraping the ground hurt it?  (When I said make an upper and lower set of support extenders, I meant put the lower set below the disc, to keep it off the ground.)  If it works fine with the disc on the ground though, ignore what I just said.

the wheelguards look a bit flimsy and i doubt you'd see hammers being used for ramming along with the beater+flipper segment arrangement you're using. and the shell panel pieces dont fit imo

Title: Re: Natef's DSL Showcase
Post by: Naryar on July 13, 2012, 03:51:49 PM
Wheel guards are for pansies.

Instead of bothering about wheel guards, widen your frontal weapon rack or use weight towards mobility (higher grip wheels, faster motors). You shouldn't be flanked in the first place, especially with a rammer.

You don't need the small disc next to the main disc. remove it and make the bot use a single wedge, and add more weapons and stabilizers.

Moar weapons
Title: Re: Natef's DSL Showcase
Post by: Naryar on October 28, 2012, 08:23:21 AM
What you need :

Moar weapons, less useless discs, less weight used on the wedge system, an actual second wedge to feed your opponents in the weapon, and building to weight limit.

^^bad advice. this IRL rule of "no metal hinge wedges" is because irlfags are butthurt of having good wedges in their tourneys and they MUST rely on chassis wedges, therefore being boring.

But they wouldn't really work IRL, Nar. When they're flat to the floor like Nate's bot and the floor isn't 100% flat, the wedges will get caught, most likely either highsiding the bot or rendering the wedge useless.

If the floor isn't 100% flat then why bother making wedges at all ? Hell your argument works for flippers and for basically every single type of wedge.
