Title: King Mushroom's showcase
Post by: SteveM4 on July 19, 2010, 02:58:33 PM
First things first, I am new here, so please don't bite my head off if I say something dumb!
Second, I have only had RA2 for 3 weeks and DSL TC for about 1 week, so I am not all that good.
But I decided to post my creations on here anyway.
Helpful criticism is welcome.

Firstly, my first robot, Havok...
Nothing special, only a flipper, and gets beaten... allot! =^(
(Hope this doesn't break the tables...)

Can we see the insides please?

Please:
Crop your pictures, we only need to see the bot not the rest of the screen
Show us an inside view of the bot as well
Give us the weight
Give us the armor.

Welcome to the forums!

And to help you with your bot, we need to see the insides.

NPC fasts would be a better choice... And ant batteries.
Title: Re: King Mushroom's 20% cooler showcase
Post by: Badnik96 on July 19, 2010, 03:06:34 PM
OK:
1. Build to the weight limit, this could be trimmed down to a Middleweight
2. DO NOT use E-Teks as drive, for this you could use NPC's.
3. Titanium 5 is way overkill on this, use Titanium 3 or Plastic 5.

Good use of chassis space though, that isn't something we see in all newbies.

And Hydro, this doesn't need ant batteries, BattlePacks are better for burst motors (IIRC)
Title: Re: King Mushroom's 20% cooler showcase

Ants?
would they provide enough power?

EDIT: Thanks for all the advice, but this isn't my latest bot.
Title: Re: King Mushroom's 20% cooler showcase
Post by: Badnik96 on July 19, 2010, 03:08:50 PM
Well for spin motors, yes. For your bot, no.

And for future reference, 1 ant = 1 spin motor.
Title: Re: King Mushroom's 20% cooler showcase
Post by: G.K. on July 19, 2010, 03:11:32 PM
And Hydro, this doesn't need ant batteries, BattlePacks are better for burst motors (IIRC)

Wrong. Depending on the burst, just use a set number of ants. Altogether, that bot would need 6 or 7 ants depending on what sixe JX that is.

Some thoughts:

*Those E-Tek's aren't meant for driving; they're meant for weaponry. There are E-Tek Drive versions in the game. However, in your case, you can easily downgrade to NPC Fasts and add on Hypno or Techno wheels.
*It may be an overkill for battery power. Then again, I'm not exactly certain how much power you need to use a flipper with a Large JX Burst. The others know and know well... at least the vets do.
*The oddly shaped chassis probably isn't doing many favors, since it would seem that your opponents would just glance off the front and attack you with no fear of getting flipped.
*Also, shrink the chassis. Having a smaller target for your opponent to hit is always a good thing. One of the big things these guys taught me to do is to take the height scale and click at the very bottom of the scale (not dragging it). That will lower your chassis a fairly good amount, saving you weight in the process.

All told, the robot looks like it could be a somewhat effective middleweight.

Post by: SteveM4 on July 19, 2010, 03:27:16 PM
Thanks for the reply, I built this robot when I got DSL, so I didn't know about the E-Teks

Also, the chassis shape is very affective actually, for the pointed front get
underneath the opponent and when they glance off they often hit the part for the
wheels and flip.

This is the second version of the Havok design, Havok 2
This one has two Razor tips on storm pistons so it isn't defenceless and a tilted rear end
so if up-ended, it rights itself.

That's too slow and overpowered. You need at least NPC Fast/Hypno for that, drive wise, peobably 4wd of that or 2wd NPC fast/Techno. Only needs 6/7 ant batteries depending on size of the JX motor.
Title: Re: King Mushroom's 20% cooler showcase

Havok 2 is surprisingly quick, and the flip-up is quite affective.
But, in my opinion, the yesterday-built Havok 3 tops all.
And here it is...

Yes, I know it is over-powered! I like batteries! But it has NPC Fasts and a powerful flip-up.

Nice skin.

I would get rid of the side hammmers in exchange for something else.
Title: Re: King Mushroom's 20% cooler showcase
Post by: SteveM4 on July 19, 2010, 04:15:21 PM
They need to be there, there the side srimech!
I just put razor strips on them to make the weapons.
Originally, where the two big batteries are, there was a vertical saw blade.
That's why the back is shaped weirdly!
Title: Re: King Mushroom's 20% cooler showcase
Post by: Vertigo on July 19, 2010, 04:23:26 PM
 :welcome

Way overpowered, this needs 12 ants, 6 for the JX large, 2 for the drive & 2 for each mag snapper
Replace the mag snappers with bsg's (they are just as powerful but lighter), bsg's also need only 2 ants each

Good space management though ;D
Title: Re: King Mushroom's 20% cooler showcase

why so many batteries?
Title: Re: King Mushroom's 20% cooler showcase
Post by: SteveM4 on July 19, 2010, 04:29:04 PM
I had no idea that ants produced enough juice, I thought the bigger batteries were better.
I also hate disused space, so I fill it up with Battlepacks!

Instead of doing that, just re-make the chasis so that it is smaller
Title: Re: King Mushroom's 20% cooler showcase
Post by: SteveM4 on July 19, 2010, 04:35:42 PM
I usually get to the space filling stage when finished, changing the chassis deletes everything, right?
Also, just noticed that my pics squash so the bots aren't as short as they appear.
Title: Re: King Mushroom's 20% cooler showcase
Post by: Vertigo on July 19, 2010, 04:40:36 PM
Try & make smaller chasis in the first place.
Most of my MWs have 3X4 squares, 4X4, or even 2X4 at minimum height.
A lot of the time, HWs aren't much bigger

EDIT: Nice avatar

Suits, doesn't it?

Anyway...
I just built another Havok...
Havok 4
This one is lower, invertible, not so many batteries and
has the circular saw that was meant to be on Havok 3.

Hi!

Liking the chassis design, would look cool if it wasn't so big. If you're going to do a HW flipper, use a Beta. I know it might be hard getting all the power for it to be awesome, but trust me, its worth it. The chewblade isn't doing much there, and I would remove it or make it a LOT stronger.
Title: Re: King Mushroom's 20% cooler showcase
Post by: Vertigo on July 19, 2010, 04:58:07 PM
IMO, HW flippers should have either 2 beta springs or 4 JXs (I tend to use 4 small JXs on my HW flippers)
Title: Re: King Mushroom's 20% cooler showcase

What armor on those?
Title: Re: King Mushroom's 20% cooler showcase
Post by: SteveM4 on July 19, 2010, 05:12:57 PM
Armour is all steel 5 or 10 for Havok 4

These flippers are actually quite powerful, it can throw many robots out of the Robot Wars arena and DSL TC championship arena.

So, you want a smaller one eh?
Here goes!

Title: Re: King Mushroom's 20% cooler showcase
Post by: Badnik96 on July 19, 2010, 06:05:57 PM
On the new Havok, the saw is unrealistic because the flipper passes through it. This cannot be.
Title: Re: King Mushroom's 20% cooler showcase
Post by: Somebody on July 19, 2010, 08:37:34 PM
DSL=realistic. Always build to the weight limit of a weight class. BSG-200 Burst Motors are better than Mag Snappers, so use them. Do not use Any Aluminum armors (very inefficient), or the really heavy armors like Steel 5 or 10. Steel 5 and 10 are overkill.

Antblade=Fail blade
Title: Re: King Mushroom's 20% cooler showcase

Thanks for all the help guys!
But the Mini Havok has the saw at the rear because it is undefended, I didn't notice it passed through.
I am in the process of making a Mini Havok II. Same chassis, Al 3 armour, still a Mag-snapper (only one that fits in the chassis) but the saw
now horizontal at the rear and passes through nothing.
Title: Re: King Mushroom's 20% cooler showcase
Post by: SteveM4 on July 20, 2010, 03:27:37 AM
Sorry for double post.

The horizontal saw was a fail on many levels, so I cut it completely from the design.
I tried using the MSG-200 for the flipper in a slightly larger chassis design, and it couldn't lift the
wheel in the test area (the flywheel that belonged to some American robot, forget who). With the
Mag motor, it made the wheel hit the ceiling and flipped the car 360o back on to its wheels.
Sadly the srimech makes the bot fly wildly around the arena, too powerful!

i think you only need 4 ant batteries max for that robot, replace the one at the front with an extender and attack a weapon to it facing out and up about 45 degress (use the angle connector) so that when you flip a robot it will hit that weapon smashbox style, you might also want to make the wedge 20cms longer.

you should check other showcases for tips on what weapons to use :) some are much better then others.

Title: Re: King Mushroom's 20% cooler showcase
Post by: SteveM4 on July 20, 2010, 04:04:55 AM
Vertigo: It is the third burst motor in the list, under the two MSG-200s.
Ianh05: 1 battery more = Havok physics engine flipper malfunction, the bot jumps too mush
1 battery less, and it doesn't even lift the car. One of those balanced situations.

Also, what are the weight restrictions for AW and BW?
I think can make that into a AW flipper and a BW popup (is that where stuff comes up underneath a bot fire-storm style?).

Edit: Just flipped HW Second Sentinel OOTA on DSL Tournament arena! Just a test!

Mush

lol

For your first question, AWs are 125 kgs or less, and BWs are from 125.1 - 175 kgs.  For your second question, yes.

the Car is tough to lift for any LW, try flipping some crates to test your flipper as other LW's won't weigh as much as that car.

About the AW thing, I have edited Havok MinII to have less batteries but still flip the car 360 but weighs 174.2kg, so just a beetleweight! Might add batteries again and make a lightweight.
Also, I cant flip any more heavyweights OOTA, it seems to be a fluke, shud've got a pic!

Noob Warz?

Well, your right there, I am a newbie.

And the Havok line of robot sucks due to lack of damaging weapons.
But I am making changes to the design 'till i get something that can beat a NAR AI bot.
All these can easily beat DSL AI apart from Grog, who still can get beaten by hitting him very hard
in opposite direction to rotation, knocking off a hammer and doing the Mauler dance 'till it flips itself!

No batteries as of yet because everyone's been saying that I have been overpowering my bots,
so for a rough idea, how many ants or batteries would I need in this poker?
Title: Re: King Mushroom's 20% cooler showcase

6. You need 6 ants at least for this bot.

I like the idea behind the invertability.

Yeah, the controls reversing upon inverting were annoying.
I experimented with two sets of controls, one to use when inverted = Failed
So I copied Pussycat!

It is as low as the bar would go! Limbo!

I sense this would be a good time to teach you about the Slider Chassis glitch. I call it the Megalow Chassis, but that's just me. Basically, what you do, when you're in the bot lab and have laid out your chassis design, when you set the height, slide the bar as far up as you can, then click right at the bottom. The chassis jumps back down much further than you can get with a normal slider, you could save a couple of kg that way, and it gives your opponents less to hit. ;)

New bot looks quite interesting, although the top piston seems to pass through one of the air tanks. Might want to fix that.

Also, what weight class is this bot going to be competing in?
Title: Re: King Mushroom's 20% cooler showcase
Post by: SteveM4 on July 20, 2010, 10:24:55 AM
HW, based on Eye-stabber and Spawn of Scutter

Also, off topic I know...
My AI is all weird, I had NAR AI for a while and wanted to use the DSL AI for a change.
I downloaded a new DSL and only copied out the AI, and now I have NAR AI bots just going
strait into walls and attacking the walls??
So, yeah, can I fix that??
Title: Re: King Mushroom's 20% cooler showcase
Post by: NFX on July 20, 2010, 10:31:05 AM
I reckon it might be something to do with the bindings not matching up with the bots. Though you might be better to seek GK or JoeBlo's opinion, someone who knows more about AI'ing than I do.

Another tip, Hypno wheels are better than Micros or ants, I think, I would suggest using those for your bot.

Heh, I like a lot of your designs so far. As for the poker up top, you would need 6 ants. General rule for batteries is one an per spin motor(drive, or weapon motors) and powering burst motors with as much as the component description says. Oh and you should use the biggest air tanks instead a bunch of the little ones.

One thing I would suggest for that bot is to make it 2WD NPCF with technos or vlads or something since as is, it's wasting weight.

But yeah, good start :D

Yippee, RA2 DSL TC AI (mouthful!) is working!

EDIT: I have built a new Havok bot, or should I say Bots.
If one wasn't good enough for you then these TWO with a vertical flywheel between them should satisfy you.
These two fused Havoks have TWO Large JX motors (i think it is JX) each motor has 4 Battlepack batteries
2 NPCFs
Perm 80L with a DSL small (spacer) and DSL Small2 disk attached, with four small beater bars
Armour is Ti 5
Flipping arms are Titanium with steel panels on the ends.

Its a beast, best Havok yet IMO.

Sheck it out for yourselves, helpful feedback is welcome.
(I know I should've used ants, but the battle packs were easier to make symmetrical)

At least try to use BSGs more that Mag Snappers. With the weight you get you can use it for many other things. Also, the little points on the front of the chassis waste weight, and send off robots to the sides when they could go up the front of the wedge. Also, when the flipper's motors are up high on the bot, the flippers work better.

RA2 DSL TC AI

just call it DSL for simplicity  ;)

just remember white a chassis make look cool it can fill up a lot of weight in your limit.. so its best to minimize the size as much as you can

Post by: Badnik96 on July 21, 2010, 09:30:52 AM
On Havok Gemini, I believe its overpowered.
1 and for Perm
2 ants for both NPC's
7 ants each for JX's

..so 17 ants total. The more efficient way to do it is 2-3 tall orange batts and 3 ants.

I had 100ks left and the design worked for the poker (page 3).
I did try a srimech but the BSGs or Mag didn't have enough power to right a HW
Title: Re: King Mushroom's 20% cooler showcase
Post by: Squirrel_Monkey on July 21, 2010, 12:19:47 PM
2 BSG's are strong enough for a srimech, I would just use bigger wheels though.
Title: Re: King Mushroom's 20% cooler showcase
Post by: NFX on July 21, 2010, 12:59:30 PM
I agree with S_M, you could remove the top set of NPCs, and move the bottom set into the middle, give it some bigger wheels, that should work. Also, the chassis could be a little smaller, I think that could give yuo enough weight to use metal hinges for your wedges, they tend to work better than skirts.
Title: Re: King Mushroom's 20% cooler showcase
Post by: SteveM4 on July 21, 2010, 01:27:45 PM
No pics yet, but I removed the top set of NPCs and found that the drums self-right the bot
(well, on to its rear really, but it runs on its rear anyway so :/)
Also added Iron spikes to the other side of the Perms so it can also right itself from its side

Used excess weight on armour. Now titanium 5

P.S. I am putting Havok Duo (was Gemini Havok,  but that's copying team Mace's Gemini) onto Robot Exchange.

Title: Re: King Mushroom's 20% cooler showcase

This is probably wrong but...
I have found that the lighter the flipping arm, the more powerful the flip.
I use JX Large bursts.
Have a (relatively) long arc of the flipper
shorter = better

Correct me if I'm wrong but this has fared me well for while I have had DSL
Title: Re: King Mushroom's 20% cooler showcase
Post by: Somebody on July 22, 2010, 11:06:16 AM
That actually seems to be right. I've seen it on Second Sentinel in NARAI. It uses 80cm instead of 120cm skirts and flips much more powerful. Problem is, it has a heck of a lot more trouble self-righting.

@J24: Just put a Geared Beta Burst motor in a bot, give it some drive, spam it with batteries, and you'll be able to flip the car.

Geared BETA burst motor??
Is that the same one that second sentinel uses, or a different one?

Same one. There are two types. One with a rod sticking out of the gears that you attach things too. It works like a burst motor. Very powerful. The other is as close to a 180 degree arc as you are going to get. Its a hammer motor. Powered by an analog switch to go back and forth, back and forth. Just like in the AI at frenZy and Beta.

Sorry for the DP.

Cataclysm can beat Grog!! No immobilisation here, just full on trashed him!
For the experienced guys here this is probably an everyday occurrence. But it is a first for me.
Finally, I have built a bit that can destroy (not immobilise) Grog.

Title: Re: King Mushroom's 20% cooler showcase
Post by: SteveM4 on July 23, 2010, 01:42:57 PM
Well J24, I go by the method of thinking up a weapon, lets say... a horizontal flywheel spinner.
I plan the chassis to accommodate a... Perm 132 or 80, depending on what you need.
I always plan a place for the motors and wheels, like on the Havok line of bots.
Lastly I put the weapon in first and then the motors and lastly, the power, 'cause ants are the smallest thing evar!

Some chassis plans I use and used in RA2 non-DSL

Chassis for Havok 2-4
(https://gametechmods.com/uploads/images/67787screenshot_29.jpg)

Chassis for RA2 flywheel bot Gouge
(https://gametechmods.com/uploads/images/98516screenshot_30.jpg)

Chassis for the Cataclysm line of bots
(https://gametechmods.com/uploads/images/44127screenshot_31.jpg)

Chassis for Havok 5 - ??

@NFX, I looked on the youtubez how many ants a Beta needed, the vid said 15. I put 2 for motors and 3 for the sake of it!
Titanium 10 armour

thats pretty much the plan i use, and yet i still cant beat grog after having the game for 6 years! (i only had dsl for 1/2 a year tho)
anyway love the wheel guard system on the horizontal spinner bot thingy chassis design
Title: Re: King Mushroom's 20% cooler showcase
Post by: SteveM4 on July 23, 2010, 01:58:33 PM
My way of beating Grog

1. Hit him so hard that a hammer falls off and it goes psycho and falls over (Havok 2-4)
2. Flip it before he gets up to spinning speed (Havok 5)
3. Corner him and grind his gusts out (Cataclysm)

In the front he means. Try not to use such heavy armor.

And by all means, please do not use skirt hinge armor. I think your pretty good, but that would ruin it.

(https://gametechmods.com/uploads/images/2883Hawk 3.png)

Try this for a more powerful flipper (just an example). With the right chassis, you should be able to get in two Betas. This one has both fully powered, along with a Perm 80 with a disc in the middle.

He was the first implementer of it in a serious tournament robot. Very cheap because it can be mounted anywhere and is invincible because it is attached to the baseplate. Look at the collision mesh (hit F12) of the skirt hinge to know what we are talking about.

Bah, just take a look!
Inside the chassis is 6 ant batteries and a control board.

Not enough people use them IMO, they're light and stronger than people think.
Havotic Cube took a full frontal from Grog and the extenders stayed on!
But then fell off on contact with the wall!

You don't have to AI. Replica Wars was a tournament hosted by me where people sent me replicas and there was a big tournament. The second one will be in November and will be Lightweights.

Maybe Cassius will be too!
Or Roadblock (I know someone's already made one)
Or.... erm... can't think... I'll think up some bots for ya

I like that Panic Attack replica. I like it a lot.

Havok 8, use something other than the Spike Strip. Spike Strips have normals, use razor tips, or iron spikes at a push.

And I've been trying to think of a way to build a rep of Recyclopse without the need for modding, but then only thing I can think of is "Snapper On A Piston".

The chassis should be a lot smaller, and you want a wider wedge, plus a wider arm, enabling more weapons. Also, use hypnos for the wheels.
Title: Re: King Mushroom's 20% cooler showcase
Post by: SteveM4 on July 29, 2010, 01:44:20 PM
The Havok line of bots all have the same style of chassis, helps in the flipping.

@Naryar, excess weight & space... Batteries can't hurt!
Title: Re: King Mushroom's 20% cooler showcase
Post by: J24 on July 29, 2010, 02:35:22 PM
you could get rid of some and put some weapons on the top aswell to make it a little bit like HazCon (if you dont know what that is its naryar's avatar)
Title: Re: King Mushroom's 20% cooler showcase
Post by: NFX on July 29, 2010, 03:28:21 PM
Or you could lower the chassis a ilttle, give you a shallower wedge, so bots ride up it easier, and you could maybe mount a weapon rack on the top, a bit like CRITICAL EMERGENCY to turn it into a flipper/wammer hybrid. Of sorts.

Needs more weapons on the drum, less armor and IDK about how well a drum hybrids with a wammer.
Title: Re: King Mushroom's 20% cooler showcase
Post by: SteveM4 on August 07, 2010, 01:03:24 PM
The drums spin upward at the open end of the bot so it sort of acts as a flipper
Title: Re: King Mushroom's 20% cooler showcase
Post by: Somebody on August 07, 2010, 07:27:37 PM
Quick guide to eFFeing.

If you move a part over an attachment point, it will jump there to attach. Before clicking to attach it, you can rotate (or fire, in the case of a burst motor) the part you are attaching too, and as long as you never move the mouse, you can still attach the item even though the attachment point has moved. The collision mesh is still with the part, so you can attach other parts where they would normally intersect.  Also, while rotating the part (the drum in this case), the beater bar is not affected if another beater bar passes through it.
Go to the test lab and back and the parts are set back to their original position.

O.o
That is an old Cataclysm there.
After hours of fiddling with it I came up with something.
The bot doesn't look that different so no point posting a pic.

I downgraded the armour to Tit 3
Added razor points to the rear DSL Bars
Changed the small beaters to medium ones
Added 2 more ants (so it lasted for more than 2 minuets)
Re-did all the hinge start and end points
Converted from NPCs to NPC Fasts
now at 798.6 Kg
Title: Re: King Mushroom's 20% cooler showcase
Post by: NFX on August 07, 2010, 08:34:18 PM
You don't really want weaponry at the back, as more often than not you'll be facing your opponent head-on. Or flanking them if you get lucky.
Title: Re: King Mushroom's 20% cooler showcase
Post by: SteveM4 on August 08, 2010, 05:12:37 AM
It is more of a 'I have weight to spare but not enough for Tit 10' moment.

Title: Re: King Mushroom's 20% cooler showcase

You can't. RA2 doesn't allow parts to pierce a chassis, so its impossible to have an effective crusher without cheat parts.

Very hard to build, because of the rule of 7 (only 7 parts per attachment point)

Update:

Made a Hypnodisc type of spinner:
Sorry, not a good interior pic really. But it has 4 ants for max power, 2 NPCFasts, Hypno wheels, Mag moter one like tornado mer's with Tit 5, had 170kg avaibable
(https://gametechmods.com/uploads/images/50250screenshot_152.jpg)
Updated version, same as above just used the 170kg and put a roll bar on top with some Mag Snappers with pick axe heads on top.

Oh, and more ants!

Just a thought, but has anyone produced micro parts. Because you can get the Ant blade & axe. Ant wheels, ant motor, ant batts.
Is there an ant spike or ant Burst or spin motor? Or even an ant skirt hinge or wedge.

has anyone done that?

Now I am attempting skinning!

I am trying to skin the titanium halfsheet for my new Havok bot, but don't want it in a dropdown styles menu.
So far I have the component in game but the preview is a white box and the game crashed when clicked on.
I have a Havokflipper.txt file in the components menu and here is the code:
Code: [Select]
name = Havok Flipper
preview = Havokflipper.bmp
dir = Havok flipper
model = Havokflip.gmf
type = extras
base = Component
passthru = plate_collision
description = The flipper for the famous Havok robots!
styles = default
damagesounds = sounds\ramplate_hit.wav
hitpoints = 1600
fracture = 40
mass = 13
material = metal(.4)
attachsound = sounds\cmp_generic.wav
standard = 1
Does that look right, I have followed Sage's tutorial and the one on beetlebros' site.

I have a folder called havokflipper with a havokflip.gmf inside.
I have edited the code in the post above to the current one I am attempting to use.
Now the box isn't white, it has the preview I made just crashes upon clicking.

dir = havokflipper

model = havokflip.gmf (with a lowercase H)

Try adding those.

Nay, I'm still making a whole batch. On Mini Havok, can you make the chassis less tall and use poly's instead of multi's? It's not like it's gonna get ripped off...
Title: Re: King Mushroom's 20% cooler showcase
Post by: SteveM4 on August 22, 2010, 11:57:58 AM
Polys are stronger than Multi's and Multi's are shorter so are easier to work with.
Also, the chassis is low as it can go, even with the lo-chassis glitch!
Title: Re: King Mushroom's 20% cooler showcase
Post by: FOTEPX on August 22, 2010, 12:01:01 PM
Really? Cool. I've just made a Controller Havok Machine, it uses 4 copals and 2 ants. The 2 copals at the front have ant spikes attached to them, and flail about madly due to havok, but don't send the bot flying. The other 2 copals are for drive. Does 400 damage, which I think is impressive for a Chicken Drill FW.
Title: Re: King Mushroom's 20% cooler showcase
Post by: SteveM4 on August 22, 2010, 12:13:36 PM
I have found that Copals use 1/4 of an Ant batt's power and a Piglet uses about 1/2.
So 1 ant is good enough for most FW/AWs!

Because the background for the snapshot uses the map of the floor of the last arena that you played in. What arena did you play in before taking that snapshot?

If the test arena doesn't count, the small arena.

I can't remember what map causes it but it has something to do with the last arena that you played in. I remember reading a post by Click saying why it happens.

Same here. It took me ages to make the move from Stock into DSL. It was largely my failure in BBEANS 6 that started it off.

As for the chassis...well, there's really not much you can do with it. Front's too steep to be a decent wedge, and too shallow to be a decent ramming face.

Try to substitute something else for the backlash wheels, like maybe hypno wheels, or something else grippier. And Axe picks are bad for VS because they have normals, which means that they only do damage at the tips. On Atom Smasher, I would remove the Pole spikes and put some front armor on the chassis, because the pole spikes can hit the bot and stop the arms before the Hammers hit it.

Post by: NFX on September 14, 2010, 10:39:31 AM
That is a very bizarre robot, what does it actually do? Is it a side flipper, like Lightning?

I would suggest shrinking the chassis, making it a regular flipper, and have two hinges on the front with angled side panels, facing inward. Attach one, fire the beta motor, then attach the other one to avoid collisions between them.
Title: Re: King Mushroom's 20% cooler showcase
Post by: Naryar on September 14, 2010, 10:48:49 AM
It obviously is a side flipper.

Where - mainly on the arm, but the chassis as well. You should have more than enough weight on a HW flipper with just one Beta and NPCF/Techno drive for armor.

Armour... Tit 10 (Kept the steel texture though0

Wins:
Grog (Flipped it and axed it it's belly to a KO)
SS (2 blows to dislodge the flippers, a few more to KO)
Eye Poker (Axed the chassis within the first minute)
Critical EMERGENCY (Flipped OOTA)

Title: Re: King Mushroom's 20% cooler showcase

I like the design. A few things of improving the bot: I would lower the chasis (but I don't know if it will effect the flipping arm) and I would also get a bigger weaponon the hammer. I would use vlads or hypnos for wheels.

Seems a bit self-contradictory. A drum's main way of attacking is to hold bots to grind, and flipping them off doesn't help that. But I have built bots like this before and having the weapon really helps.

Title: Re: King Mushroom's 20% cooler showcase
Post by: NFX on September 16, 2010, 05:57:59 PM
To be fair, the space management is quite good. Though I do think you might have gone a bit overboard with the batts. Upgrade the drive (possibly make it 4WD if you can, lose the perms, and have a static weapon rack instead of the drum. And use Hypnos instead of Minis.
Title: Re: King Mushroom's 20% cooler showcase
Post by: Naryar on September 17, 2010, 02:14:58 AM
Needs a wedge and better drive.

And a Beta for self-righting is a massive waste of weight, i can selfright a HW with 2 BSGs.

Seems a bit self-contradictory. A drum's main way of attacking is to hold bots to grind, and flipping them off doesn't help that.

Also this.

Mags are equally powerful as BSGs, just faster, but drain 2x more electricity, plus weigh 10 kgs more.

Also they don't retract as well as BSGs.

a.k.a. Mags ARE a waste of weight when you can have same torque on a BSG for less power drain and less weight.

Yeah, make it faster, & add better wedges
More razors, you could probablymake it smaller aswell
Beating Grisly Bear is no great achievement  ;)

BTW, nice bump J24 :D

EDIT: (https://gametechmods.com/uploads/images/47122screenshot.jpg)
Made this a few weeks back, its one of my favourite bots.
This can dish out 3000+ point flips
Try and (if I do say so myself) take a bit of inspiration from this. Your main problem is your lack of razors

Hmm, good bump.

I was only against bear because it was late and CBA at the time.

Innards tomorrow.

J24, the gyro-stabilisation is like Typhoon, spinns so therefore cannot be flipped. Inside Havok 10 there are 2 piglets with a DSL disk on each to make it more stable when faced with a flipper.

Make it a flipper, or a flipper/wammer. Flipper/wammer/juggler hybrid is just pushing it.

I think it's a cool idea, the wammer flipper part is a good idea definately, but the juggler part could work well aswell, infact it could probably be set up to feed the opponent bot back towards the front flipper part.

That is a loooot of ants, you only need 7 or 8 really.
And don't use that circle design, make it a cuboid so you can make it a lot more tighter.
I don't really get the point of the bsg's though, I get that they're there to self right but usualy a decent spinner can self right itself, atleast with a self righting bar.
Does firing the bsgs effect the bot while it's spinning noramally though?

Too true, but I am hearting that self-righting mechanism, even though corkscrew-style self-righters are lighter and stuff. With a chassis reduction and a few improvements, this could be quite a good opponent.
Title: Re: King Mushroom's 20% cooler showcase

Actually, I'd like to see that in a shell spinner rather than a HS (KE is more than enough to self-right it with the help of a 80cm poly sheet). The Dictator II's design is somewhat underrated.

The flipper is raised and as far as i know, the only cube bot with a Beta and the first vertically mounted one as well.

Title: Re: King Mushroom's 20% cooler showcase

The slope of the betas needs to be the same as the wedge, they are as tight as you can go.

you can keep the slope the same just make the top start lower. it would be a huge pain so i would leave it.

Strange, if mags fit you'd expect BSG's to fit.
Still, you're better of having a slightly bigger chasis to fit in the bsgs instead in the long run.
For the ridiculously small weight, make the chassis as tight as possible, use a multi instead of the baseplate and a better weapon, if you're sticking with one weapon make it as strong as possible HP wise and DP wise to give you some more stamina.
Perhaps even better wheels, probably wide ant wheels.

Use 30kg batteries, it'll save you some weight :P

4 of them and a few ants should do it.

Use a full sheet instead and move the razors?

Hmm.

Ants are there so weight is at the front for good wedge-ness.

I'll try the full sheet.

Do that, but try and make the chassis a bit smaller aswell.
And put the ME right up to the edge of the chassis, you should be able to attatch the piglet straight to it then without the extra poly extender.

I'm pretty sure the extender is there so the weapon doesn't intersect anything.  While this can be fixed easily (just move the power components lower), he would still need the extender most likely.

Would adding stabilizers prevent it from Havoking?

The point of H15 was wedgyness and thick armour. I find that the 2 beta flippers are powerful, but no room for weaponry.

What I might do now is make Havok bots flip and cataclysms destroy.

Expect H16 to be very different

I recently made a 3 beta flipper, I even got it fully powered, but it had mehish wedges and pathetic armour strength, so no, not worth it.
For havok 16, have you experimented with bsg's? While it may take a little while to get the setup right, they're very good economy wise, I haven't checked, but I imagine more economical than betas overall, and it would be easier for you to sacrifice a bit of flipping power for more armour/better wedges or whatever.
Title: Re: King Mushroom's 20% cooler showcase

2 Betas are pretty much all you need to flip anything OOTA. Second Sentinel can flip Big Stig up to the roof at certain times. You just need to fine-tune your AI and smartzone placement.

That's what I tried with H15 with a smaller chassis and amour. H16 will probably be going back to the JX bursts like H1, 2, 3 and 4.

But thats flippers

And don't use JX's for the next havok, they're not really worth it.

You dont see many 4WD drum bots though. I call 4WD, AI it, and see how it does.

I haven't built a drum in ages...I used to be a drum fanatic, just look at my first few bots xD

If you dont want to do that though, shrink the chassis and add some more weapons. I dunno how light DS teeth + beater bar would do on a drum. :D
Title: Re: King Mushroom's 20% cooler showcase
Post by: NFX on December 30, 2010, 09:26:00 AM
4WD NPC Fasts and Technos are VERY fast. And slightly hard to control unless you AI it properly. Definitely shrink the chassis, and use Pwn's trick of rotating the drum components 3 clicks as you attach them, and attaching beater bars to each other, making effectively 12 rows of beater bars.

No. I went through the same process as I did for Havoks 5 - 16! As well as about 5 reps.

I think it was to flip bots into.

Oh, it isn't Havok 6

It was called 'The presence' and was BEFORE Havok 3.

And yeah, it is sh**!

"you must construct additional pylons"

:P but yeah the static weapon rack idea isnt well thought out.. you would be better with a wammer setup..

Never-mind Havok 17.

I have a replica to of a K'nex bot I made about 10 years ago.

Its a counter weight, so in the Ra2 one I put all the ants at the back.

I should make a serious upgrade for a tourney or something.

Probably something like Ti 5

Bet it has average wedges.
Title: Re: King Mushroom's 20% cooler showcase
Post by: NFX on January 18, 2011, 04:21:00 AM
That doesn't look too bad, I don't think. Possibly a little bit low on battery power. Try using some of the big 30kg PCP645 Batteries, you've got the chassis height for them, I reckon.
Title: Re: King Mushroom's 20% cooler showcase
Post by: SteveM4 on January 18, 2011, 10:27:57 AM
You think I tried those batteries!

The chassis is far to low for them

@Nar, I think it is tit 3, how did you guess Titanium?

FOTEPX, do you want this for your crazy IRL pack?
Title: Re: King Mushroom's 20% cooler showcase
Post by: NFX on January 18, 2011, 10:32:56 AM
In which case you can heighten the chassis a little bit to make room. A beta needs 21 ants (I think) which would cost you 136.5kg. 3 PCP625's and 3 ants, which gives the same amount of amps, weighs 27kg less. So in that bot you'd save 54kg to use on other things.
Title: Re: King Mushroom's 20% cooler showcase
Post by: SteveM4 on January 18, 2011, 10:35:20 AM
This bot has about 35 ants, and works fine for ages, the retraction of the flippers seem fine anyway.

Oh, and it has relatively gewd wedges

I commend your ability to be constantly improving Havok while keeping the basic T-shaped design the same, steering away from Second Sentinel klones.

Also, I don't think anyone else has ever made as many as 19 complete iterations of one bot.      The next most iterations I can think of would be Urjak's Bane series.  Go for the 20!

I know it is UUNNDDEERRWWEEIIGGHHTT but some are and cannot be upgraded. With any heavier armour the technos go inside the chassis for some reason.

I was going to scrap it until it started doing this to opponents.

Some bots, it is a showcase after all. These are WIP pictures, that means this bot has been changed since the pic

[Image bumped due to SkAI High discussion.

Weight and armour are not important, I am posting 5 WIP pics then the final one, so you guys can see the EVOLUTION (cough) of the robot.

Because only the SUCCESSFUL designs SURVIVE to be altered.

BTW, I have done Hanky Panky (again)

You may reject it though. But it is one of my better flippers.

It outwedges all but 1 Havok and flips many OOTA.

Single beta and allot of empty space because I used the original baseplate chassis from the stock bot.

Bacause to keep it different from the other flippers.

Just the baseplate however, the chassis is very low and re shaped.

Make it invertible and use a metal hinge wedge
Weaker Drive
MOAR RAZORS
Smaller chassis
Use multi extenders
Use lighter extenders

And you're using SkUI High  :gawe:

It is invertable!
Weight is a bitch
Wouldn't be a rip of RD then would it?
See 2
See 3
It is actually lighter to do this, M = Multi Extender E = Extender  M + M + E = at lightest 8 Anchor weighs 4

Files containing different types of bots will start to appear in separate posts.

First to be uploaded will be an entire collection of my Havok robots. These should be up soon.
Next should be other flippers and front hinged.
HSs will follow and lastly gut rippers.

Then a folder full of experimental rubbish that may be interesting.

Hope you like my parting gift.

Well, it appears that I have gotten back into RA2 after a six moth break.
And during that six months, I have forgotten all but the basics!
I do remember some stuff though, like metal hinge>other one and 1 ant = 1 spin motor. Thats about it.

So, I am going to start my new showcase with the last two good bots I built; Havok 20 and Frontal Assault 3.

And the new one, and don't hold your breath for a new design/name, I wanted to start (again) with something familiar.

Ta daa!

And for the sake of anything, I am starting back at Havok 1 for this. And it will probably be the last because frankly I have grown tired of T shaped Beta flippers, as I am sure you have too.

Ok, I know it needs work in areas, (mainly weapons) and it does only have one beta. I can't for the life of me remember how I got 2 betas + ants + NPCs into a chassis of similar design. Yes, I know its too thin, this is a revised one.

I am expecting either an uproar of 'Oh great, more beta flippers' or 'Hi KM, still working on that old design eh? Well, in the mean time we found out betas are rubbish'.

I honestly have not lurked the DSL showcase section in ages so I have no idea what the build quality is like now.

Glad to be back and making one lame return!

You can say that about any building era.

I'd suggest trying simply 2WD with Techno Wheels to save weight over 4WD and Hypnos, that'd allow you to use some more weaponry if you need to.

Ha, while you guys were commenting on these, I built a few more!
(So these will have nothing to do with the improvements stated!)

Here's Toro, and it is too the weight limit...
Can't flip for toffee, but a bloody good wedge in my opinion!

Here's the same bot stripped down and is about 730kgs
(https://gametechmods.com/uploads/images/13842screenshot_9.png)
Wedge is pants, but OOTA bots from the middle of the DSL arena.
But then I thought 'is there a way to get Stripped Toro's power but make it heavier so the guys on GTM won't yell at me. Oh, it needs to stay cool'.
Then I came up with this.

And it is still underweight.
I truly need practice!

Then I got bored and made a MW version of FA3.

I had fun, thats important...

Thread merged with the old one. Are you afraid of bumping your old showcase because bumping is seen as bad? That's completely silly, it's ONE DSL SHOWCASE BY MEMBER else the DSL TC robot showcase becomes messier.

Also you have no hoofs (who the heck could type with hoofs anyway ?), nor are you a pony. You are an human. Please do not introduce more pony spam in the showcases, it might excite the other pony-obsessed persons to go and spam this showcase with ponies, that I do not want to have.

Not be critical, but that flipper would be torn apart by a good spinner due to the lack of any front protection. I think the design could use some fine tuning.

Yeah. If the opponent has weapons, I am screwed. The armour is tinfoil or something.

When I fought (I controlled) it against Sabre Tooth, it managed to get a small hit in. Lest to say my health went pop and nearly died.

Yes, but without the half sheet the bot does not weigh  399.0kg.

As your BTTB bot proved, halfsheets are hopeless on flippers.

Traitor!

Anyways, make the weapons stick out more, and the wedge is useless as-is

Ok, Finalised Battlebots entry. Flips more then the Beta and faster too.

But does it break the IRL rule?

Uggg... this tournament is just going to be one big wedge war (and I'm using a skirt hinge so I'm going to lose). I think it is realistic enough though.

Well, I'm not sure if it's the angle, but it looks as if the halfsheets(?) pass through the wedges when in ready to flip position.

Planning anything for BoF2 KM? It's DSL IRL MW, you could enter one of your Havok bots...

Hmm. You have a point.

*does stuff*

Upgraded flipper wedge from Steel to Tit half sheet and those beaters are the medium ones.

Hang on...

*more stuff*

Nope, Tit 5 is as strong as it will go without having to delete something big.

Cool.

Three front wedges like that, and the wedges at the side are a tad pointless, in my view. As are the upward-pointing razor tips. You could try a more conventional wamming rack, and perhaps toughen up the armour.

Titanium Halfsheet is only really useful for underside protection, directly onto the baseplate. Try a Full Sheet, it's got three times the HP for half the weight.

You got a deal, friend of mine

Also STRICTLY NO MLP references and posting of ponies will be allowed outside of playground.

Hello! I am back after 2 years! Thanks to Nerd^3 and his video.

I have been instructed to bump this old thread, so designs from here on will probably be nowhere near as good as they were before!

Anyway, on to my first bot of the revived showcase. I'll be honest... its pretty bad.

(https://gametechmods.com/uploads/images/9474C86 int.png)

C86. Because letters and numbers sound cool.

Go on, give it all you got!

Also, as a side note, I can't get the 'Export' or 'Import' paint buttons to work at all. Any ideas on why that could be?

Spin motors only need 1-2 ants to power it for 3 minutes.

Not too bad if a little bland.

Yeah. It kinda has the bad habit of not winning anything, and getting really slow after like 2 minutes.

I'm reading through all the advice given to me back in the day, and then I'm going to rework this thing.
Title: Re: King Mushroom's showcase

Rebuilt it, looks way better now. And it can actually win fights!

However, the weaponry now has a habit of just falling off.

(https://gametechmods.com/uploads/images/53072C63 ext.png)

Oh, Armour is Titanium 5.

I think this is more like it. The other one was... lets not go there.
I kinda want to keep with the vertical spinner thing, works well.

Also, any ideas on why the paint import export thing is still broken?

What is it with me and vertical spinners now.

Anyway, some new bots.

(https://gametechmods.com/uploads/images/42969F90 ext.png)
(https://gametechmods.com/uploads/images/31623F90 int.png)

Armour is Titanium 3
I have forgotten how to wedges at this point. This gets outwedged horribly.

However, some showcase scanning and old critique reading reminded me of hinge and small wedge is best.

(https://gametechmods.com/uploads/images/19124H798 ext.png)
(https://gametechmods.com/uploads/images/3129H798 int.png)

Armour is Titanium 3 again, and weapon motor is a 6-mag ultra thing. So fast.

Not sure I'd the last one is Ninja IRL or Standard, then again who am I to accuse people of that. Maybe you could consider adding some protection to the motor or adding more armor.

I love the new upgrade on the first one.

The second however isn't quite IRL. The disc needs more support. Also the wedges & especially that titanium half-skirt look out of place.

Due to all the wonderful things that are happening, with Robot Wars coming back and all that, I have decided to re-download this game and DSL 2.2.
I would like to start getting the habit of building things again, and now I have finally learned to run RA2 in compatibility mode so it doesn't crash every 2 seconds, I think I can do that.

By far the best thing I have built in the past few days is the HW axe-bot Gladiator, using those new piston burst motor things.

I tried to re-make Gladiator to make it somewhat smaller and better. This is the end result. I give you...

799.3kg of pure pain, with Steel 3 armour, its no pushover. The axe hits much faster and harder than the original using the large burst piston.
