Title: Jaydee99's DSL showcase
Post by: Jaydee99 on March 15, 2015, 01:07:31 PM
Some new DSL2 bots. I made some stuff on DSL3 but converted the game back so I'll upload them as a bot instead.

Not really sure why you're wasting a valuable 20 kg on an unused piglet, but whatever. Isn't the worst robot I've gotten.

I made it quite a while ago, on DSL 2.1 but kept the UI the same. It is for FullImpact.(https://gametechmods.com/uploads/images/72138kd.jpg)

Why is this in your custom component showcase when it's just DSL2.1?

I made this last night, a mix between DSL 2 and 3 components:

Based on the robot Rick, so I called it Grimes.

Do some work on the skins, and the last 4 robots you've made will be awesome. I like the designs a lot, but  the skins let them down.

this angle of view is pretty terrible on the first bot.

the mw is... what does it do ? is it a fodder- I mean poker ?

hw is bland, also underweight.

Sorry
It's a spinner. There are two piglet's there.
The middle one is a rammer.
Ok then.

Title: Re: Jaydee99's DSL showcas
Post by: Naryar on March 18, 2015, 11:30:21 AM
yes, i can see that the first one is a piglet spinner with 60kg of beaters, and lots of discs (use drums in that case, really) simply take it with a better angle.

the second one... a HW rammer with a grand total of 30kg of weapons ? even in irl it is so very underwhelming...

i don't get on how you newbies get to build HW's that should be MW's or LW's. Does it has aluminium 10 or something equally as excessive ?

I do like it aesthetically but it's gonna lose so hard it will not be even funny. Add more weapons, really.

HW... how to improve... make it more interesting, add stuff to it (NOT random stuff) and make it look less like a generic Robot Wars flipper ? Hell even a generic RW flipper can be cool with the right design, I suppose.

Not the biggest fan of the color scheme, but all in all it isn't terrible. Just try to get it closer to the weight limit if you're entering it in anything.

moved that to DSL showcase so you may stop posting DSL bots in the custom showcase.

Post the custom version in the custom thread, and the DSL version in the DSL thread. It's really not difficult.

only custom stuff i see is some reskinned components. but maybe it has custom internal components. if it really counts as custom (and not Jaydee custom) then move it back to your other showcase.

I saw a picture of GoldenFox's General Generic drawing, so I bring "The Genetic" General Generic (had to put my own touch on it) :

Somewhere, a bald eagle just died. What the actual hell is that not-american flag doing on top of your robot.

As the current owner of the robot that came out of General Generic, it certainly isn't the worst robot you've made. Certainly needs a good old fashioned skin cleanup though. You also may want to put something on the flat sides so it can't get stuck there.

Despite the fact that's it's completely bland and uninteresting, I somehow kinda like it. You wizard.

It is a USA lookalike flag, to give GG its own touch. Do you think DSL bars would work on the side for stabilisers? I was gonna keep it flat like the picture but it's a good idea.
Thanks for GIMP Paranoia, btw.

Honestly, this feel like you're actively trying to make GF93's bot look bad. I'm not completely annoyed, yet here are a few things you can do to improve it for using MS paint to make texture:

1. Start with a simple skin you make in the game and use that for a template once you export it.
2. Make a higher resolution skin by raising the pixels to something like 1024x1024 (You can go higher, but I think this is enough). This way you can have more room to make a skin look good.
3. Try to restrain yourself from shrinking the textures that you want to apply so they don't look blurry unless it's almot the same size you need it to be.
4. Handpainting on a computer is harder than you think, especially if you use little room to work with. If you really want to though, try to make sure it doesn't look like something that it would look ugly. (Oh yeah I've tried and it didn't work so well in the end (Example: Before (https://gametechmods.com/uploads/images/83867pokerface.png)/After (https://gametechmods.com/uploads/images/72396pokerfacenewskin.png)) So in a nuthell: Remember the KISS Rule
5. Find a couple pre-made images and experiment with what wold look cool in the end. While I mostly use them for sponsor images and flag decals, you can still find some images that would fit the motif you're going for. The text applies to this too.

If you look at the the above bot, you can see the suggestions I specified apply here. It's not perfect, but If you made the skin look good, you got the job done.

That's basically what I could recommend you to use to make MS paint skins look good. Hopes this helps. That or use a professional version of paint. No one's stopping you.

It kind of has an early robot wars vibe just from looking at the shape and components. It's ok-ish.

the skin is trash though. stop using ms paint. it looks like NES diarrhea.

I have to agree with the others. There's something about it which is pleasing. I think it's due to the mix of Berserk and Steg-O-Saw-Us.

The skin is beautiful. Can I have an HD download? <3

Can we get some inside shots?

Based on the outside, you can do a lot to clean up this bot, the wheelguards for an example, bring them closer to the wheels and loose the carbon attachment stuff. You can also change both wheels to the same wheel, that'd look better. The weapon motors will need more protection. And maybe you can do something similar to death roll by changing the saws to discs which go threw the head, the front large typhoon teeth could be changed to Alu or Ti triangle plates to save some weight in which you can put into the weapon. looks great so far you've got a cool idea, now it's about cleaning it up.

So this was the innards of it before I made small alterations (I took off the carbon extenders and changed parts on the front weapon)(https://image.ibb.co/mkv0SR/prplinside.png) (https://imgbb.com/)

Here's after:
(https://image.ibb.co/gz39Mm/gdgd.png) (https://imgbb.com/)
Inside:
(https://image.ibb.co/cbw77R/vxv.png) (https://imgbb.com/)
Should I change the triangles on the front to be smaller for design? I think they guard the motors a bit, not sure what to do lol

instead of the front spike strips use extenders, its a large waste of weight which can be used for motor protection or better motors. I would mount TMWR's to the top part of the jaw instead of having spike strips. And maybe try changing the plates to 40x40?

it does look cool enough. though it is honestly a mess and you need to remove components that don't enhance the effectiveness and/or the aesthetics of the bot.

Don't use Ant piglets for drive, they are weapon motors. The motors that are placed at the front have even less protection.
