Title: GarvintheGreat's DSL showcase
Post by: GarvinTheGreat on April 19, 2012, 03:24:48 PM
So here it is (please don't laugh)

Thang

Notes:
Steel 1
Self Rights well
Flipper not as strong as I would like, but then again it is a LW
Battery life not as long as I would like.

Please crop your pics. If you only have MS paint, get Paint.net here for free, and use it to crop out the botlab.

As always, trim the chassis down. Use a BSG (Or 2 if you need) for the flipper. As for the batteries, 1 per spin motor, 2.5 per BSG (Round up). Finally, are those metal hinge wedges? If not they should be. How does it perform in-game?

Also, have you fixed your Internet issues?

I'll edit this post when I've had a better look @ the bot.

Also, have you fixed your Internet issues?

No just using a different user.

Also I'm currently working from a laptop. The screen is only 10" and I have no mousepad (Was tough makin the bot.)

I will {try} to crop it

And at RS, what steel extenter?

Oh, so it's a flipper. Ok. By the way, it's a very underweight middleweight.

Small JXs suck for flipping. Use two BSGs and metal hinges instead of baseplate anchors for wedges. Lower your ground clearance (use hypnodisc wheels) and maybe make the drive faster if you have weight. Steel is kinda mediocre armor too, I'd use plastic 3.

@ty Don't fully understand what you mean

@Awsum Nary deleted it because I had no bots in it

Still working on cropping

Also, what this be enterable in a DSL LW tourney? I mean it does say MW, but its under 249.99 kg. I think Naryar would be proud of me, for building to the weight limit.

It would not be allowed in a DSL LW tournament. The max weight limit is 249.0 for lightweights.

The metal hinge thing isn't workin. Everytime I put the hinge on it glitches out and half the hinge fly's around, preventing me from putting anything on it.

You need to lurk at more DSL bots. The wedges do no good if they are behind the flipper.

Add another BSG and put them above the chassis on multi-extenders, then downgrade the armour to compensate.

Titanium 5.

I'm pretty proud of it. Self rights well. Agile but packs a good punch. I am going to make its identical twin The Confederate (which will just be the same exact bot exept with a confederate flag, but i'll wait until I get better with paint). I figure I could enter the 2 in as a HW Multibot

and use multiextenders instead of baseplate anchors

If I trade them in for BSG's would would I use the extra weight on? Also aren't the BSG's going to make my flipping power worse?

nope they're virtually the same other than weight
you could probably use the weight on bettar drive, slimbodies is painfully slow on mw

you could still try to get npcf's with the left over weight, and change the wheel to hypno's/rubber's/mini's if you want some more weight to play around with

Titanium 3

All skirts are Titanium.

Mr.Asumsause you were right. That stuff does help. I am wondering though, if I could fit another BSG in there, between the other 2. If I Brought the armor down to Titanium 1 I probable would have enough weight. OR instead of changing the armour, I could change the skirts to Polycarbonate. What should I do, Change to Poly or Change the armour. Or just not add another flipper at all?

Use either hypnos or vlads for wheels and try to mount the motors differently.

use vlad wheels and get small/large (if you have the weight) jx's instead.

These big wheels are not only not fitting the bot at all, they're not helping.

Also 2 BSGs for a normal speed MW flipper is not enough.
Title: Re: GarvintheGreat's DSL showcase
Post by: cephalopod on April 22, 2012, 08:54:47 AM
I imagine you could shorten the chassis a bit and just put the batteries on top of each other to free up some weight for JX's. Maybe Hypno wheels would help too. Not so bad though :)

Title: Re: GarvintheGreat's DSL showcase

note: if you rotate the NPC's 180 degrees, you can have them sticking 1/2-way out of the chassis and therefore have a smaller chassis
Title: Re: GarvintheGreat's DSL showcase
Post by: cephalopod on April 22, 2012, 10:15:30 AM
Only thing that could help (but requires total rebuild) is shorter chassis. Could get you better armour.
And yes, it can be made shorter still as Awesumsauce said.
Title: Re: GarvintheGreat's DSL showcase
Post by: Squirrel_Monkey on April 22, 2012, 10:16:16 AM
Guys we all know this is a vast improvement but it is by no means good. The standard for a MW flipper is surely 4 BSGs with that drive setup.

Yeah, you don't need an angled chassis, the flippers create the "wedge" shape instead. This can save a lot of weight.

note: if you rotate the NPC's 180 degrees, you can have them sticking 1/2-way out of the chassis and therefore have a smaller chassis
Or Trov glitch to save even more :P (Nah, that would be taking it too fast)
Title: Re: GarvintheGreat's DSL showcase
Post by: NFX on April 22, 2012, 10:17:12 AM
Looking pretty good. Chassis could still stand to be tightened up a fair amount. A little trick you can use to save a little chassis weight is to mount the NPC's hanging out of the back. They can pass straight through the walls of the chassis, and that can save you a good few kg. Since they're mounted to the baseplate, they're invincible, so they can't fall off. And it prevents opponents from hitting the chassis should they get around the back. Take a look at Puncture to see what I'm on about. =)

Decided to try a PopUp since it's realitively close to a flipper. First ever PopUp.

Extenders are aluminum, Poly skirts. Had a few exta pounds but couldn't think of anything to spend it on.

a skirt hinge with a full titanium sheet (from the extras menu)

get rid of 20cm from the weapons to make it closer to the bsg and get vladiator wheels, pussycat wheels aren't great at all.

Titanium sheet added

Vlad wheels added

Change the extenders on the popup arms to polycarb, and use the gained weight for hypnos and stronger skirt wedges.

Use the left/right NPC's for hypnos. :P

Cranked out 2 bots last night

I was flippin through the Ex and DL random bots to give me ideas. Came across a HS by Badnick (Very cool bot by the way) and gave me an idea for this. Titanium 1 I think. Personally, I don't like this bot at all. The spinners are too high to do dammage and they break easily. But at least now I have an idea on how to build HS.

Blood Sucker

(https://gametechmods.com/uploads/images/37291Blood Sucker.jpg)

Titanium 1
NPC Fasts
Poly Extenders
Titanium Skirts

For some reason I like this bot. Not great right now, but you guys have made my bots really good. Not sure what the deal is with the skirts. Guess I just added them cuz they looked cool. Maybe you guys could help me figure a use for them?

Glad you guys like my popup!

I suggest angling the spinners- use the angled flipper segs mounted like the current ones are. Its better to have an angled HS if you have wedges. You can also shrink the chassis as you only need 4-5 ants for this. And vlads would be a better choice, as cool aspussycat wheels look xD

This has to do with stock, but didn't feel like makin a new thread. When building a Stock rammer, should I just extenders or T connecters. And if extenders, which color?

Extenders, and they're the same. Just use red to annoy Sage.

use a t connector and then attach red extenders on the t connector because red extenders are master race, just dont use square ones please

I had a dream a few nights ago, (you know you play too much Ra2 when...) and therr was this bot that was fighting Behemoth. I decided to try and recreate it, and a few modifiactions later...

It weighs 394.7 kg, uses a judge motor to flip (I know it cheatbot2 but I didn't want my dream bot to be weak) It uses the TM drive, hypno wheels. The titanium sheets on the bottom prevent it from tipping. Unfortunatley, it dosn't like to self right. I may come up with a srimech but thats for another day

This is why I am looking for advice to make my bots better. Just a couple months ago I was building DOGs. I have yet to learn the Dos and Don'ts of DSl. Now, I would like some "helpful" advice on what to do to make this bot be O.K. Not just "That is a FAIL." I want advice to make it better.

You want a popup/rammer hybrid ? Build your hybrid so the rammer weapons DON'T interfere with the normal function of the popup.

As an example, see Razorback 3 in NAR AI.

F11 takes a screenshot of the RA2 window, and saves it to the Screenshots folder in the game directory. You'll need to both crop it (Everyone konws what the Bot Lab looks like, and it takes up vastly more memory space than necessary), and save it as either a .JPG or - preferably, because you don't get the blurriness - a .PNG format.

It seems there is a problem. I was trying to download DSL on my new laptop (windows7) so I could take a pic of that bot. After installing winrar I went to Sages sig to DL Dsl. But after a long wait, the DL list says "Your file may have been moved or deleted" and sure enough, it was gone. Why did this happen and what can I do so I can DL DSL.

Title: Re: GarvintheGreat's DSL showcase
Post by: Mr. AS on May 06, 2012, 07:17:21 PM
bsg's are approx 2 ants or 1 battlepack, and spin motors are 1 ant so it's probably underpowered, you could try rotating the npcs 180 degrees and putting them halfway out of the chassis, and reduce the chassis and see if you have enough weight for more batts

5 ants? That needs 7 at least. BSG needs 2.5 ant bat. That plus the usual 1 ant per spin motor = a requirement of 7 on this bot.
Title: Re: GarvintheGreat's DSL showcase
Post by: Naryar on May 07, 2012, 10:36:41 AM
Not 7 at least, but exactly seven ant batts. Nothing less, nothing more.

most vs dont need wedges, get rid of it, and those t- wheels are pretty bad, swap them out for grannies, and 8 batts is overkill, i'd recommend 5
Title: Re: GarvintheGreat's DSL showcase
Post by: NFX on May 07, 2012, 05:06:27 PM
Snowplows tend not to work as stabilisers. Obvious Pneudonym showed that in RoboLeague. Get rid of them, get rid of the wedge on the front, and add some angled skirts (preferably 80cm at this weight) to stabilise it. Also swap the wheels (Vlads, maybe), swap the Baseplate Anchor for an ME (lighter and smaller), and make sure the weapons don't go through anything. They're slicing the control board in half right now.

I was using the Snowplows as traps. I think they were used in 123AI. (I have know clue what I'm doing) And if I replace the plows with angled skirts won't that make it easier to break the trap arms?

Also, if I use the ME it will make the spinner go straight up.

No. Know is for knowing things, as in knowlegde. No is a negative response, the opposite of yes. [/grammarnazi]

You can use flipper segments to angle it with an ME, and how many batteries does this have? It only needs 3.

Apart from that, good bot.

*sigh* You really need to go and find advice and ideas in other showcases in order to improve your building.

Also, newfags giving average quality advice.

5 ants is more than enough. I would put four on that one honestly. Three for power, one for additional battery longevity.

Apart from that, good bot.

Good ? Nope. This is at best below average for a VS.

It needs more total weapon weight and a stronger weapon motor. Less weight invested on the drive and on general extender work would be good as well.

Also, iron spikes are kinda bad for these.

This is my first VS bot, don't expect it to be god quality. And look in other peoples showcases to improve? Lolno. Learning is best done by trying, and reciving advice, and using that advice to expand you abilities. I know not much in terms of VS. Instead just saying "That bot is bad, give up now" give recomondations. Tell me what I parts I need to swap. Irons bad? O.K. then, what parts should I use instead? And look in other peoples showcases to improve? Lolno. Learning is best done by trying, and reciving advice, and using that advice to expand you abilities.

If learning is best done by receiving advice, how do you explain how the precursors of the DSL realistic style (that includes me) learned ? By receiving advice ? Most certainly not !

Learning how to build is done by gathering data by yourself OR listening to advice, analyzing it and applying the conclusions to your bot building.

... Do you have any initiative or are you unable to learn anything entirely by yourself, instead relying on other's advice to go forward ?

I know not much in terms of VS.

Obviously, and that is why I am giving you advice by telling you to go watch other showcases. I partially learned stock by doing this. Craaig's would be the best exemple for VS.

Instead just saying "That bot is bad, give up now" give recomondations.

I have never said that you should give up and I have given four general recommendations, and one specific, and you complain about me not giving you recommendations ? Nonsense.

Tell me what I parts I need to swap. Irons bad? O.K. then, what parts should I use instead? Not only have you done this in my showcase multiple times, but others aswell.

I there somthing you don't like, tell me what needs to be done and I will gladly fix it.

I gave you general clues, so that you must think about it to change these general clues in specific advice custom-tailored for this bot. I have helped you for free, so don't complain about it and start thinking about how to apply that advice to your bot.

Honestly I'm tired of skilled people just giving precise advice on a silver plate so unskilled people can just pick it up automatically without any effort and not much thought from their part. And I have done it in the past, and I realize that is wrong, but that will end.

1-It's not a guessing game, it's a matter of YOU finding the right advice BY YOURSELF.
2-I have absolutely no obligation to you but the ones I choose. That is, to teach you how to become a better builder. That you can do mostly by yourself, not by relying only on people's advice.
3-"Cut me some slack ?" You are seeking advice, i am giving you advice and you ask me this because you don't like it ? Do not test my patience !
4-Why are you, the student in all of this , trying to teach ME how to give advice ? Because you want easy advice ? That you're not gonna get from me.
5-What you seem not to understand is that you can learn the rights and wrongs by YOURSELF. Of course, it's easier to just absorb easy advice given by others. It's also the idiot's way.

I would recommend
- using stronger wheels, something of the Vlad, DSL, or Granny type (maybe even Hypnos, if you can manage it),
- cut down to about 6 or 7 ants,
- remove the wedge (it gets in the way when a bot is under it),
- swap the plows for some angled skirts,
- change out the baseplate extender for a Multiextender
- and rearrange the control board / batteries so that the weapon isn't cutting through them

Maybe work on the weapons, but I'm not exactly an expert on which weapons to use.

6 to 7 ants for 3 motors? How long have you been out Freez O.o

@Garv- Dude, chill. Use the advice that you've been given and showcase improvements. If you've done it wrong, then we'll help you go back into it. The best builders got good from interpreting vague advice, showcasing what became of it, recieving more advice, and generally improving the bot until its as good as can be, or close to it. Looking at other showcases also helps, even though it may sometimes lead to partial kloning. Getting everything handed to you on a platter isn't going to help your building skill much.

@Garv- Dude, chill.

I am not angry. When I typed those posts, I wasn't angry and they wern't negativley posted. Naryar might be getting a bit angry though, but I'm not sure.

1-It's not a guessing game, it's a matter of YOU finding the right advice BY YOURSELF.
Yes, I understand that.
2-I have absolutely no obligation to you but the ones I choose. That is, to teach you how to become a better builder. That you can do mostly by yourself, not by relying only on people's advice.
I understand that aswell.
3-"Cut me some slack ?" You are seeking advice, i am giving you advice and you ask me this because you don't like it ? Do not test my patience !
I am not "testing" your patience.
4-Why are you, the student in all of this , trying to teach ME how to give advice ? Because you want easy advice ? That you're not gonna get from me.
I do not want "easy" advice. I never have. I get the whole "Things cannot just be given to you" thing.  I was giving you advice on how to give better advice. I was telling you that you have to be nicer. Not so harsh from the getgo.
5-What you seem not to understand is that you can learn the rights and wrongs by YOURSELF. Of course, it's easier to just absorb easy advice given by others. It's also the idiot's way.
Where do you keep getting this "You don't understand that you can learn the rights and wrongs yourself" at? I have posted repeated times that I get it, and I always have got it.

This whole thing has become a problem. Maybe it is a sign that I should stay away from VS. Hopfully HS will prove opposite...

Ai,Oh! New bot.

Since VS didn't go well, I decided to with something more, in my comfort zone.

NPCF
9 ants
Titanium Skirts.
Titanium 1
4 flippers, 2 static wedges on bottom

Since I had extra weight, I thought about sticking a razor in between the two top flippers, so it could do damage. But with the Multi Extenders are defaultly at 90*. I want the Ex to be facing outward so I can stick a razor out. Any tips on how to make it easier to turn the ex?

Feedback welcomed.

why do you keep usingpussycat wheels?

You all want to know? ...fine

The reason I use them over hypnos is because, of the NPC rights and lefts. They never seem to work. Regular NPCs can be stuck way out of the bot, allowing for more space. NPC lefts and rights cannot do that. They won't stick out of the bot at all. Then I use NPC regulars and I choose Pussycats because... well I don't really know. I just like them.

NPC Lefts and Rights can easily stick out of the chassis, if you turn the correctly. Take a look at my Puncture series to see what I'm on about. All you have to do is line them up by eye, then you can get the better Hypno wheels on.

Speaking of, when you turn a component, it doesn't turn smoothly. If you pay close attention, you'll see that it "jumps". Each jump is an increment of 10 degrees, so all you need to do is watch for nine "jumps", and you'll have rotated the Multi Extender by 90 degrees.

Any other things I should try? Are 9 ants enough?
Title: Re: GarvintheGreat's DSL showcase
Post by: ty4er on May 20, 2012, 11:10:44 AM
you'd want 11 ants preferably
Title: Re: GarvintheGreat's DSL showcase
Post by: NFX on May 20, 2012, 11:28:46 AM
I'd have said 12 ants. Each BSG uses 2.5 ants worth of power, so four of them would be 10, plus one for each NPC (spin motors use one ant's worth of power, Copals to Dual Perms), making 12 ants total. Reminds me of Smashbox 2 a little bit.

12 ants added. No more weight left. Anything else?

One of my better creations:

Titanium 1
NPC Fasts
Problem with this is that it won't turn well. Not sure if it is because of the hypnos...

Probably. Also, it's far too long. You could get that stuff in a simple box chassis, which will save you a ton of weight. And don't overlap your wedges like that, it hurts the wedge quite a lot. And is technically unrealistic.

Ah, I see now with the chassis. Rebuild coming soon hopefully.

EDIT: Also, I'm guessiing it would be better if I roatated the extenders so that the razors stick up?

It's awful. Really.

Hammer-like weapon shape is utterly pointless at that arm length, the chassis is indeed far too long and unefficient, it has no front armor, it can't self-right, it has not enough batteries... It's not even aesthetically pleasing or uses a revolutionary new system.

Yes it would be.

Build a standard, efficient generic popup and fight it against different bot types until you figure what makes a popup good, THEN try and innovate.

Yeah. I was going to make a popup, but when the extenders were preset at 90 degrees the opposite way of what they needed to be for a popup, I got lazy and decided it would be easier if I just left it the old way. New version will come soonish.

Simply rotate them 90 degrees. Press F12 to see the collision meshes, it's tricky to see the Poly extender turning on its own.

Title: Re: GarvintheGreat's DSL showcase
Post by: NFX on June 12, 2012, 11:53:18 AM
Better. But if you attach the poly extenders by their side AP's, that will give you a shorter reach, more acceleration, plus they won't stick out the front like that. It's kinda generic now, but it's much more effective and efficient than it was before.

Yeah, but the Hypnos for some reason weren't turning well. It still has some issues but it's better.

Yeah, I liked the previous because I didn't want a generic bot. But this on is much more effective.

yeah just take off the beater bars and emphasise the weapon arm more and it would look like a pretty cool IRL design IMO
Title: Re: GarvintheGreat's DSL showcase

Looks reasonably IRL. Similar to Armour Geddon from Robot Wars Series 3. Too many beaters to seem IRL, though, that'll do a lot more damage than it would normally. Maybe add some more weapons on the tail rather than the wheels.

You don't need so much drive, and a stronger weapon motor, as well as bottom protection.

A smaller disc should let you get more weapons. Screw logic.

Try stabilizers like this:
Finally Blood Orange 2 - need definate help here. Gets beaten by the original, but the layout on this is better (I think). I think it's due to the lack of back support, it flips back quite easily, and the skirts are weaker than on the originals. Any advice?
