Title: G.K.'s DSL Builds
Post by: G.K. on December 07, 2009, 01:21:59 PM
Hi all, I'm finally starting my showcase.
Here's my lightweight:

I'm a bit miffed as to why it fails at outwedging other bots.  Any help or constructive criticism would be appreciated, thanks.

not bad although from what ive heard those wheels arent too great.
what armour do you have.

Post by: G.K. on December 07, 2009, 01:28:31 PM
I was using the hypno wheels but although it was still under the lightweight limit the game said it was a MW, otherwise, I still would be.

 the weight limit for LightWeights are 250 kg.

you dont need all of those sheets at the front so if you got rid of some or even downgraded to a light type you would maybe have enough weight to upgrade wheels to hypno.

Which ones should I get rid of?

i would get rid of either the top set and hinge or the bottom set and hinge.

Okay, I'll try that.

@LDL Cheers, it took forever.

Whichever plastic is around 14kg I think.
Title: Re: G.K.'s DSL Showcase
Post by: Reier on December 07, 2009, 02:15:03 PM
Well the reason it isn't getting under anything is because the wedges aren't touching and the end, and the wedge is way too steep. Also Door hinge wedges > skirt hinge wedges.

Ok, about the bot, here are some tips.
Ant batteries are the best. Good job. However you don't have enough.
Mini wheels aren't good. Hypnos are better.
You don't need such a heavy extender for the razors.

Also listen to Naryar and the other vets.

Post by: G.K. on December 07, 2009, 03:34:51 PM
Thanks for the tips Reier.
Can you clear up what you meant by "the wedges aren't touching at the end" please?

Title: Re: G.K.'s DSL Showcase

get rid of the 2 polycarbonate skirt.  All they do is make your wedge worst.
Title: Re: G.K.'s DSL Showcase
Post by: G.K. on December 08, 2009, 12:51:24 AM
I just did that and made the skirt from the top longer, and I just thrashed Hazcon!
Thanks 123.
Title: Re: G.K.'s DSL Showcase
Post by: Naryar on December 08, 2009, 05:06:44 AM
Attach at least 2 skirts to your upper hinge as well. You'll get shredded by any good HS with such a steep wedge anyways.
Title: Re: G.K.'s DSL Showcase
Post by: G.K. on December 08, 2009, 10:33:24 AM
Okay, will do. I have updated it slightly, will post pics in a moment once I have done what you suggested.

EDIT: Unfortunately, any more components takes it over the weight limit. In fact, it is claiming it is a MW when I put the smartzone on.

This version has comfortably beaten Hazcon and Enfilad3.
Title: Re: G.K.'s DSL Showcase

wow. Looks unrealistic though. is the weapon passing thru the burst motor? try to avoid that.

have you tried Mads Smartzones v3 ? I have been told they are weightless
Title: Re: G.K.'s DSL Showcase
Post by: Doomkiller on December 08, 2009, 07:57:43 PM
Doesn't look too bad actually.

Allthough, try cuttting the weight by using poly extenders for the weapon ( will make it weaker, so watch out), and by making the chassis smaller so that the wheels are outside of it. Then try to lenghten the skirt on the door hinge. Will make it better.

As for getting under Hazcon, it's quite easy to do with a metal hinge, but u should try making a skirt hinge that can get under hazcon. Not as easy.

good job overall though.

That is the real razor's collision mesh. Tetrahedron with a "removed" apex.

Title: Re: G.K.'s DSL Showcase

Here's my latest update:

This is actually a completely new build, with a smaller chassis and better wedges. As for realism, the razor just misses the slimbody motor.

I couldn't get all three razors flat, but I got two and made the third as close to flat as I could.
Title: Re: G.K.'s DSL Showcase
Post by: JoeBlo on December 10, 2009, 06:33:47 PM
to make razers flat you position the first one correctly then fire your burst THEN click

it will attach it in mid air,

do the same for the others then go into the garage and back and they will all be back on the extender
Title: Re: G.K.'s DSL Showcase
Post by: G.K. on December 11, 2009, 02:01:29 PM
I've tried that, but it doesn't work for some strange reason. Anyway, the third razor is only one 'rotation' away from being flat, so I'm happy with it.

you must still be doing something wrong ?

http://beetlebros.gametechmods.com/ra2techs.htm

look down near the bottom, its called eFFe glitching
Title: Re: G.K.'s DSL Showcase
Post by: G.K. on December 12, 2009, 12:59:46 AM
It's not attaching when I fire the bsg and try to attach it.
Title: Re: G.K.'s DSL Showcase
Post by: JoeBlo on December 12, 2009, 01:13:27 AM
did you hover it to were its meant to be as if you are about to attach it

but dont click

hit fire and dont move that mouse at all

as soon as the BSG has hit max arc click without moving the mouse before it retracts

the razor will then be floating in space
Title: Re: G.K.'s DSL Showcase
Post by: The Ounce on December 12, 2009, 01:18:03 AM
I would also like to say that sometimes you can have all of the razors facing the same way without the eFFe glitch, at least for me.  You can try different sides.
Title: Re: G.K.'s DSL Showcase
Post by: G.K. on December 12, 2009, 01:24:00 AM
After a bit of trying, I did the glitch while I didn't even mean to.

Thanks Joe.

Can anybody suggest anything else I should do to it?

Title: Re: G.K.'s DSL Showcase
Post by: Pwnator on December 12, 2009, 01:29:48 AM
Well, empty space can still be minimized by shrinking the chassis a bit more. With the extra weight, you can upgrade the armor. :D
Title: Re: G.K.'s DSL Showcase
Post by: The Ounce on December 12, 2009, 01:32:13 AM
You could probably downgrade the sheets to aluminum and add another ant (lol alliteration), or add another razor.
Title: Re: G.K.'s DSL Showcase
Post by: G.K. on December 12, 2009, 03:29:53 AM
Here it is with the new changes. I added another extender and a razor, and spread the razors out more evenly. I also downgraded the skirts to aluminium. I believe the armour is currently 5mm plastic.

Here's a MW flipper I made:

Titanium 5
12 Ants
NPC Fasts
398.5 kg's I think

Title: Re: G.K.'s DSL Showcase

Solid armor tends to be better than skirt hinge ones.  But if you want to stick with skirt hinge, just put 3x 40 polycarbonate skirt on it (you can use stronger ones if you want).

Anything that doesn't move, off the top of my head there are, anchor, multi extender, half sheet, and omni extender.
Title: Re: G.K.'s DSL Showcase

I'll see about using an anchor. What should I use as armour if I choose to do so?
Title: Re: G.K.'s DSL Showcase
Post by: 123savethewhales on January 15, 2010, 04:32:53 PM
Firestorm flipper, if you can figure out how to fit that in.

Otherwise, there's always light plow and angled side panel.

The benefit of solid armor is that they don't sink in upon impact.
Title: Re: G.K.'s DSL Showcase
Post by: Naryar on January 16, 2010, 08:48:32 AM
Niiiiiice

BSG's are better for flippng though since they have the same torque.
Title: Re: G.K.'s DSL Showcase
Post by: G.K. on January 16, 2010, 12:26:52 PM
:embarr I couldn't fit the BSG's in the chassis.
Anyway, the beater bars were making it a HW, so I swapped them for half-hexes
(https://gametechmods.com/uploads/images/74446enigma4.png)

Also, Joe's amazing 42 skin inspired me to make a new team. Here are the AW and BW, the flipper's in it too:

Edit: has been upgraded to tite 1 since pic was taken.
Now has Typhoon spike in front of control board, plastic 3

A possible first DSL HS/VS from me on the way soon too.

Title: Re: G.K.'s DSL Showcase
Post by: Pwnator on January 16, 2010, 09:37:13 PM
The AW has more weapons than most AWs. It doesn't need more. I also can't say anything about the BW. But at least the flipper still does damage. :D

Wait the arms are static ? Forget what I said about Fallen Hero then... I thought it was a flail SnS.

It might be wiser to put the flamethrowers farther from the chassis and just near the hammers since it'll have increased range.
Title: Re: G.K.'s DSL Showcase
Post by: JoeBlo on January 20, 2010, 04:06:35 AM
nooooooo

if the flails make heavy contact with another robot it will havok

Betting Limits has such an issue as the AI FBS_1 spins it in the wrong direction (another fix I am making for 2.2) thus feeding robots into the flails

Flail Flamethrowers need to be safely out of reach while spinning (they only havok at that point)

I don't really see the point of that middle-placed small DS tooth.

For stabilizers, you could just keep your multi-extenders and chain 40cm Ti skirts (total of four).

You could downgrade the top plow to upgrade your feeder wedge on the sideways popup, and try to find a better way to attach the Dual Perm on the second one. The poly extender is kinda brittle on that spot. :D

I have no such popup... Urjak has one though, and i saw another one in a showcase that looked a lot like this.

Also 2 plows are not worth it. Just use one attached to a medium/long multi-extender.

Anyways, I like the side popup, But the Polycarbonate extenders were the Razor tips are seem kinda weak, Specially if the bot fires too early O_O
You could try making the armour Plastic x10 & Upgrading the Polycarb extenders & The Polycarb sheets.

You might want to get rid of the beater bars and just upgrade the poly extenders to flipper segments.

And I haven't seen a bot that intimidating since SCRAMJET. XD

QFT

Oh and also i'm not sure about these beater bars because they don't cover much. The large hammers will probably be ripped off before them *remember Cataclysm 1 sometimes losing the 70kg hammers before the 25kg ones*

Edit : GAH ! I didn't notice that Pwn posted the same advice :FFFUUU

Secondly, a MW Trapper.

More like make lateral extensions on the extender, so you might actually self right with it instead of just avoiding immobility.

The rammers look good, but the SnS has way overkill drive for a LW and not enough weapons.  How fast does it spin?

The Judge weapon is only 10 kg and not a cheatbot2 weapon any more.

On the SHW: I really did not tried them, but Frenzy hammers aren't really a good choice according to 123. You might try the Shrederator shell or simply good ol hammers on a DSL bar. It's probably too slow as well and the armor plow setup isn't convincing.

On the MW: Hypno teeth aren't going to do much placed that way.. Can't you manage to get a smaller disc (Edit: PWN BEAT ME TO IT ARGH) and win some KG's for moar killalot drills ?

On the ant: You should really fill up these 2.5 kgs

On the BW: It doesn't really looks combat efficient to me :P

It's probably too slow as well and the armor plow setup isn't convincing. I'll AI it and see how it fares. The plows are stabilisers, and believe me, they are needed. Speed seems fine, any more, and it'd overbalence.

On the MW: Hypno teeth aren't going to do much placed that way.. Can't you manage to get a smaller disc (Edit: PWN BEAT ME TO IT ARGH) and win some KG's for moar killalot drills ? Ok, I'll try a stranger shaped chassis to do so.

On the ant: You should really fill up these 2.5 kgs I'll see what I can do. Any suggestions?

On the BW: It doesn't really looks combat efficient to me :P This team is meant for trying out new designs/weapons. I've never seen a BW TS before.

Some MW VS I made out of my LW SnS' chassis:

Quite deadly in all honesty, but it can't drive straight and I don't know why.

3 ants,  forget the armour, NPC drive.

verrrry exxxxposed plastic connectors... You should really remove all these plastic extenders, axle load the wheels and just use 80cm Ti angled sheets.

But it is original

It is original-ish because of the extender work and the SnS-likey motor placement.

IMO it would be better if you just use metal hinges instead of a burst since the design's still invertible.

And I had a DSL version of Helix sometime ago, but AGOD just loves to ruin things for me. XD

To make the sawbot drive straight, remove the wheels and put them back on, but when they are over the axle, hold ctrl and move the mouse, then attach. It makes it drive straight for whatever reason.

Or not....

Anyway, here's a couple new bots.

(https://gametechmods.com/uploads/images/39883asylum seeker.png)

Rebuilt Asylum Seeker. Just as bad as the original, and scrapes being realistic. Plastic 5.

A CC1V prototype:

Basically a 'Survivor' bot (Like Flee Beatle). 4 lots of narmour, 2 halfsheets, npc normals, a dsl disc and motorcycle wheels. Reasonably inpenetrable. But likes to tip itself upside down. I was never going to really enter it though.

I also have a bunch more stuff to showcase, but I can't be bothered atm.

It isn't. But the CCIV rules haven't forbidden it yet. :P

I like the name of the Narmoured bot.

Its safe from gutrippers, but not quite so much spinners in general. Rammers may have fun with it too. Though, really, it depends on how efficiently you placed the narmour :P Does look like it could survive a while though.

EDIT: Just seen JB's post, so it wont be quite so good.  XD

But when it goes up, a bot can fly right up the wedge and clip it right off, because it will take a while to retract because it is so long.

It will have only used the weapon to flip a bot over, so it'll detract before anything self-rights and turns to come up the wedge again.

At least it's not that easy for opponents to take off when it's inverted, in the same way a carbon extender is.

this kinda shows what bot building has come to. we can't even put some on our bots for decoration without getting bad comments on it. so we still have the chassis to give a paintjob, but be fair, in some cases the chassis isn't even visible and all that counts is serious building, no matter how a bot looks, as long as it is combat effective. well i don't like that all to much. i say let GK put decoration on his bots if he wants, it makes his bots original. something you don't see to much these days.

Weird hybrids are never good in LW class. You don't have the weight to make both weapon systems competitive compared to pure-type robots.

Good point, though both bot types here don't really need to much weight focused on them, apart from maybe the power source problem.
Title: Re: G.K.'s DSL Showcase
Post by: Naryar on December 06, 2010, 12:35:35 PM
Let us see... Already 36 kg of power components minimum (4 ants, 1 small Puma, 1 CB). The drive probably would weight 70 kg, so that's 106. Side hammer, at the very least 50. 156. Flamer, 186. Extender work, minimum 195. Chassis, 210.

And then you have only 40 kg to spend on wedge and armor. More like 20kg on armor.

Plus it would be probably unbalanced, hence not going straight, hence getting screwed by popups. And have no more than 3-4 razors on it's weapon, hence getting screwed by rammers/SnS/FSS.

Need I add more ?

Well *plucks up courage to disagree with clickbeetle* if he made it invertible then the potter wheels would probably be on the floor (i imagine that the front wedges keeps them off the floor when right way up) If it was invertable, when flipped over those wedges would hinder it quite a lot aswell, so making it self rightable is surely a lot better in the long run.

Power isn't everything, from my experience, the sacrafice to get large JX'sis just too much

One of the most improtant things for a flipper is stability, which decreases as you get more power

Its just the amount of weight spent on flipper sheets/stabilisers, there isn't that much left to create a decent wedge
Title: Re: G.K.'s Showroom of Cannonballs
Post by: Squirrel_Monkey on February 20, 2011, 04:47:41 AM
You argument about small JX's is that you don't need large ones, but I'm simply saying, if you can use large ones, use large ones as they have m ore power, therefore more chance of an early win.
EDIT: 3V=3IR has the same drive, wedges and flipper components as Enigma 21 but with large JXs and weight left for stabilisers.

If you don't want flails, then you want pure concussion.

See the weapons being spinned are considered pure momentum because the entire chassis is spinning with it.  Try using 4x 30kg hammers.

It didn't. It just...happened.

I've not tested it vs SHW's yet.

Title: Re: G.K.'s Showroom of Cannonballs

Well most wedged SHWs have double wedges and they are on average longer, so your spinners will be on top of your wedges before you can stick yours under their chassis.

Here's a new bot. Hammer meant to totally bypass stuff at front and go for vulnerable rear of the top which I've found on quite a lot of bots. Unfortunately, this proto is disproportionate and falls over if it really turns at all, and I could have probably made a nice chassis too, this one is a touch too long.

7 ants, NPC Fasts, Plastic 5, 40cm angled tite wedges.

Looks quite good, I reckon. Should be excellent with a bit of tweaking. If the poly and titanium extenders were swapped, would that allow the weapons to last longer?

I do like it and I think it's a shame that I had to reject it.
To back myself up on my glorified vs point. It's a vs in the same way that Sage's Mammoth and 123's Candy Bar (http://s895.photobucket.com/albums/ac159/123savethewhales/candybar0.jpg) are Vs's. Just because the chassis is enclosed like that doesn't make it a FBD.
Title: Re: G.K.'s Showroom of Cannonballs
Post by: NFX on June 27, 2011, 06:52:30 AM
If you build an FBD, does the chassis have to spin as well? Because that would be nigh-on impossible to AI properly.

I know this probably doesn't answer your question fully. But this (https://gametechmods.com/RA2wiki/index.php?title=Full_Body_Drum) is what i'm using as the definition. There is a difference between FBD and TRFBD.

Also on a completely unrelated note; why do I always get you and G.K mixed up? At first I thought I was replying to G.K. I think its because you both have usernames which don't seem to stand for anything.

A year to the day since I last posted in the thread... Page 6 of the showcase board... I've really let myself go...

Well, I wondered if I could get an NPC and a Dual Mag on a LW Flail Sheck Spinner - continuing on from where I left off with Minifridge 7. I ended up with this monstrosity:

This is Minifridge X. Below picture should give some clue toward the setup:

2 ants, tite 1, 4 flail razors, 2 flail light beater/razors. It's a pity that I couldn't get more weapons on but never mind.

I've not tested it AI'd yet but I think it's stable enough to work with FBSPlus. There's a huge problem in that the DSL disc doesn't cover the whoel baseplate but the NPC's collision mesh prevents that.

Really, it's just nice to build again.

Started going over my NAR AI teams for Nary. I'm going to rebuild anything that needs it.

Team 42 was relatively easy. Judging from NAR AI 2.7's bindings, the bots weren't updated to the incarnations I'd had. Here's the team now:

Clockwise from top left:

Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster 2: No changes since I last showcased it.
Enigma Redux: Complete rebuild I made recently. 4 BSG's.
Marvin 2: No changes since it was made a while back. About as good as a Sir K Drill dome FSS can get unless I put the Dual Perm out of the chassis.
Mostly Harmless 2: No change from most recent showcased edition.
Deep Thought 2: Now has 9 razors and a large beater bar. NPC Fast.
Plural Zone. It's not the best bot, but seems to perform decent enough. No changes from its life as 'Kit Car' except skin.

Another easier team here, Team G.K. The team's just some of my favourite/successful (in case of Minifridge 6) bots. Not the most competitive.

Clockwise from top left:

Lobos CP: New rebuild of my LW popup. I'm trying to lose 10kg off it for hypnos but it's decent enough. Can sometimes outwedge DoA2 (No idea if it is a benchmark any more - if someone could tell me that would be appreciated).

Defiance of Asimov: Not changed since I showcased it way back.

AAM? Never! - Unchanged.

Minifridge 6 - Replaces Minifridge 4 here, to date my only solo tournament winning bot.

BW - Gracchus - Replacing Tribune, a rammer that didn't even get into NAR AI (though I built it just now using Tribune's chassis), this is probably a clone, idk.

Fedex Uno 2 - Again obsolete now but I look back on it fondly.

I'm getting more into IRL building these days. Here's something I made today.

Pretty interesting, I like it. In particular I like the chassis shape and spikes + wheels at the back.
I'm not a fan of the iron spikes on the sides though, they look a little too long for me, maybe lightning spikes would work as a replacement? (a little lower down on the sides too, since the lightning spikes are wider)
The wheels at the front are interesting too, I can't decide whether I like those or not. I think I would switch the back wheels to hypnos too for consistency, but on the other hand the wider back wheels look cool already... I can't decide :S
Finally, is it possible to add an extender between the two sets of blades at the front, as an IRL support?
Overall, I think it's a pretty cool build

The whole shape of the bot was inspired by the sort of appearence of F1 cars, so naturally I wanted to make it fast. That said, 10 of the drive motors are slimbodies so it isn't really that quick. :P

The rams work surprisingly well, although still quite badly. That and I've only really been testing it against my AI'd LWs from 4 years ago :P

All kidding aside it looks fantastic, it looks like a shark with those 2 Ripping teeth at the back and the wheels poking out the front wedge, I do worry about the ant discs effectiveness though. However since it is IRL it should not really matter, what does matter is that it is terribly underweight for a Heavyweight.

You think you could use some of that extra weight you have left and maybe give it at least a skin of something that would look like an F1 car as you stated before? I feel like that's more so nitpicking that offering advice. Still, I like what I am seeing.

So I tried building something DSL-s that wasn't a flipper today for the first time in maybe 2 years. Heavily inspired by Ripper of Guts, the sawblade VS Somebody won BTTB 2 with. However, the design is quite glass-cannon-y, as the discs are easily knocked off. I've decided to experiment on the other end of the spectrum with durable weapons, and so created this:

Mini wheels because a) they're small, and b) they're not too grippy.

Initial testing had me take ages to hurt bots, though the weapons' durability did mean they tend to outlast quite a few other bots'. This makes me think the bot isn't damaging enough, but I'm not sure if this means change weapons or look for a better way to make sure I hit vulnerable parts of opponents... thoughts?

What's up with the random beater bar on the extender?
But yeah potter's wheels are poop for damage, I would just drop it to 2wd with NPCF + techno and use 3 Perm 80s for more weapons but Perm 80s have terrible HP which wouldn't help the durability at all.

The extenders got knocked off a couple of times during testing, so they're there for protection. Prolly a waste of weight though, I admit.

I'll investigate 2wd for sure, that would also make it less of a total knockoff of Somebody's bot.

Title: Re: G.K.'s DSL Builds

It throws a bit, but I probably should look into ways of making it do it more.

I had a really productive RA2 day today, I've built like 10 bots. But as I've spammed the forums enough with all the BTTB stuff I'll just post my DSL things.

Firstly, I redid the back and skin of my IRL SHW (https://gametechmods.com/forums/index.php?topic=2904.msg597350#msg597350), and did a funny with the name. Up to the w/l.

(https://gametechmods.com/uploads/images/71299False Blackjack.png)

Made what was meant to be an IRL MW but ended up being a HW, a bot I call Steel Shark:

And then there's this bot. I was inspired by my very first BOTM entry (https://gametechmods.com/TournamentFiles/botm/Jan10/001.png), back in January 2010, that I found today, and also Tentomushi. It's coincedental that Somnium posted something that isn't totally dissimilar today in his Stock Showcase.

The idea is that I drive over the top of other bots like a Flying Guillotine, then use the servo pistons to bring the weapons down on the opponent. Other than the fact that it simply isn't very efficient, there are 3 major problems with it.

1 - The legs are not tall enough.
2 - The servo pistons cannot physically lift the bot back up once it comes down. I've tried actuators and burst pistons but both are worse - the actuators' axles just glitch out so I can't use it, and the burst pistons are too powerful - the bot just flies away like that thing Stagfish entered into Clash of the Titans
3 - And even if the other things weren't problems, this is (https://gametechmods.com/uploads/images/12845DropperInFloor.png). :(

Still, it's always nice to build something new.

False Blackjack is pretty cool, I like the front grill design a lot, as well as the use of the lightning spikes. Skin is maybe a little dull, but otherwise I like it.

Steel Shark is kinda ridiculous, in a good way. I think the maces on the wheels are unnecessary, but that's really all I don't like about it.

On the flying guillotine bot, would making the pistons point downwards, rather than use the extenders coming from the top and down, make any difference to its ability to lift itself?

-Thanks. Skinning is something I really struggle with, have you got any pointers?

-The maces make it actually be able to drive :P

-My choice of photo is not the best - that is the bot after it has fired. If the pistons were pointed the other way they would be lifting the chassis up and it would have to start low down. I hope I've explained that alright.

Uh, how? If it's a weight thing, to drag the wheel down, you could use a large beater bar or something so it looks sleeker. Looks cool though, however the random spam of teeth on the flipper(?) looks weird imo.

I was in the process of writing a tutorial before I went on holiday for a bit, so I'll try and scrape that together into something readable and PM it to you, if that works for you.

Ah yeah I see, didn't think of that.
