DSC's IRL DSL showcase
« on: October 09, 2010, 10:50:53 PM »
I've had RA2 for 3 months now. I build robots, I try to build them with some personality, i'm not a big one for the uber-bots that are "realistic" but honestly are totally unrealistic and are just for pure damage. I like many people try to make robots that could exist in real life.

So onto my first robot, Ratt-E:

Quite nippy, decent flipper that can OOtA quite easily, with the saws mainly used for invertibles. 3mm Titanium armour, and a decent allrounder.

Welcome to GTM!

There are a few things I can't tell from the pics; next time make the screen shots larger and display the weight (I'll give you credit for cropping them though).

From what I can see though, it could definitely use some improvements.

For starters, multidirectional weaponry is not very good on wedges.  Either move the weaponry up front or get rid of them altogether and make it a pure flipper.

If you choose the latter, consider getting stronger burst motors (ideally large JX motors, since this looks to me like an underweight HW) and staying away from Mag Snappers altogether (they're as strong as BSGs, but weigh more and retract slower).

It also needs to be faster.  Use 4WD NPC fasts with hypno wheels or 2WD NPC fasts with technos (I personally prefer the latter since it gives you more weight to work with while still being fairly fast).

Finally, it looks underpowered.  The general rule for powering spin motors is to use 1 ant battery per spin motor, but burst motors need more power than that (they need about the same amount of power as it says in their descriptions, maybe less).
Tournament Record: 94 Wins - 50 Losses
Challenge Record: 2 Wins - 2 Losses

spin motors = 1 ant
bsgs = 2 ants
small jxs = 5 ants
large jxs = 7 ants
beta bursts = 21 ants

*I think*

A few ground rules you need to follow unless your Thyrus and you like bots similar to those in real life:
1. Try and keep your chassis to the minimum size you will need so you can have better armour, drive and weapons.
2. Ants are your friend unless you have a beta burst motor. If you do, use those tall black batteries.
3. Don't use aliminium or DSA armour. If you have to use aliminium but never use DSA armour as it is weaaaaaaaaaak.
4. Lots of motors are as good as each other but ideally you want NPCs to NPC fasts on a middleweight with hypno wheels or vlad wheels, TMWR3 drive for a lightweight and NPC fasts for a heavyweight with Techno wheels.
5. Certain weapons have normals which mean the only do damage with certain areas of the weapon. However, Iron Spikes, Razor Tips, DSL hammers and Sledgehammers, Light DS Teeth, Beater bars and Hypno Teeth don't. Try to use them on a gut ripper.
6. DSL is a war of the wedges. Ideally you want metal hinges with half tite sheets on with a small wedge component on the end. You may also want a snapper or MCB wedge. I'll let Nary, The Ounce and Pwn go into further detail...

It definitely is very underpowered.

BSG motors also are a better choice than Mag Snappers because these were not balanced.

The razors aren't doing much.

Oh and listen to ounce. 99% of the time he knows what he's talking about.

I like the skin. You should send that to Stagfish for his Realism AI pack.

I really like it, especially the skin. Not sure if this helps, but I would try to use the same types of wheels. For good wedges, use the door hinges and small wedges.

Right off the bat, all my images are clickable thumbnails, just to save on anyone opening this thread and having tons of big images to load.
Having taken in all the comments, suggestions, and opinions, i'm still keeping the bodyshape, as I want to keep the "Robot Wars" look to it. Not saying that the efficient bots are bad, but they just don't float my boat at all. Hard to give a robot any personality when its made of extenders and ti sheets. :P However, internals I can certainly take advice on, hence:

- Saws on the back have gone, although ideally i'd like for there to be something similar on the bot at some point, just for the damaging ability.
- Flipper has been upgraded from the Mag Snappers to the smaller version of the JX burst motors.
- 2WD NPCFast/Techno drive, but is there any explanation for why these make the bot faster than say Tornado's or Vlad's?
- Armour upgraded to 10mm Ti, can't remember what it was before (definately not DSA though)
- Made sure the flipper pieces are angled to get under more, same with the additional skirts. May not have been visible but on the original the mis-matched tires put the chassis at a slight angle to the ground.
- Batteries have been re-done. I've gone for extra power than is needed by the motors and bursts because I have the weight. Speaking of which, 58.9kg to play with, any suggestions?

Doesn't look bad.

Your style (Robots not meant to be pure killers, look cool) Is the exact same as Thyrus'. You guys should be great friends.

DSL wheels all have a 'grip' value; the higher the grip, the faster a bot will travel.  Technos have a grip value of 2.3, while Vlads and Tornados have a grip of only 1.3.

As for the bot, the only thing I could suggest without ruining the style would be to upgrade to large JX burst motors.

It seems way too obvious now it's said out loud. D'oh. But yes, I did try the larger motors, but I was only able to fit one in the same space. I dont know if 2 small = 1 Large in terms of performance, so I stuck with two.

And yes, Thyrus seems to be on the same wavelength when it comes to robot designs. :)

Hah ! You do know that last bot goes towards the realm of combat efficiency, you know ?

I don't think the side skirts are helping much.

New robot conceived today, still in tweaking phase:

Its based quite heavily on Vader/IG-88 from Robot Wars, it doesn't seem to be a widely-used style of VS.

Dual Perm 80s to evenly distribute weight (one larger perm on one side screwed with the steering of the robot).

The additional Slimbody motors were placed with some crude form of invertibility. Not really realistic and they will probably be removed to allow more space for batteries.

Not thrilled with the skirts, but they're effective.

I don't think the back wheels are realistic. Also, build to the weight limit.
