Title: Drgnslyr's DSL Showcase
Post by: drgnslyr on September 07, 2010, 05:46:05 AM
Hey, Im new here, and to RA2 and DSL, so I hope some of these arent too stupid, just please bear in mind that im just trying out building things other than rammer/pokers, or hammer bots, so these will probably look quite generic/boring untill I get a bit better.

Ive forgotten to take screenies, so ill add them in my next post.

'Tis fine, most newcomers do build generic bots for a while and then develop their own style when skilled enough (or do not and end up as clone builders)

Looking forward to what you can build !

Welcome to the forums, dude. ;)

Looking forward to what you come up with. =] You'll probably want to take some of the more experienced members' advice on board, the people with coloured usernames tend to get it right most often, and your bots should start getting better. =D

Heheh, yeah, I was looking through Naryar's DSL showcase when I found myself unable to view anything, hes got some really good bots.

Not good enough :P

On topic, we are waiting for yours !

Welcome to GTM, man. Don't piss anyone off with a coloured name and listen to the advice we give you and you should be fine. How old are you, just so we know what we're dealing with?

I'm not terribly sure age is as important as how he acts. Stagfish is younger than Sparkey, IIRC, which I probably don't.

There's no need to reveal your age. Act as mature as you feel you should.

This is currently my only purely mine bot, a lot of the rest are based off of bots in AI packs, with things modified.

apparently the upload wont let me upload the standard screenshot format, and i dont have any decent editing software that doesnt take half an hour to load, other than paint (although I did say decent)

And for the record, im 21 in december.

If you upload it into Paint, you can just crop the image around the bot (we all know what the bot lab looks like ;) and save it as a .PNG format. Then you should be able to upload it.

Screenshot looks to dark to see anything and no one here likes bmp files. (I don't know why though) Everyone here likes png pictures.

The forward teeth aren't going to do much.

.bmp files take up much more memory than .PNG files, as they save each pixel's attributes individually. I think .PNG files try and find clumps of pixels with the same colour, and then save them together, though I'm not entirely sure. But .PNGs give you .bmp quality for much less memory space, normally.

You can also use 2WD NPC with Technos, will save weight and power.

Right, heres a better image of KaotiKa

Thats the geared version of the beta, btw, hence the disc, didnt think to save weight by mounting the rod via is perpendicular mounting point....

just fyi, i tend to use that paint scheme on all my bots, its a base black, with blood red edges, and HnV crud&scratches, with a "Kill" Decal near the front/around the weapon.

I like it, its simple, yet not just plain solid-coloured...

Yeah, ill post the insides in a little bit, its nowt special, probably over-bat'd, but its got some ballast in the front to keep it down when the weapon swings...

Remove the ballasts before naryar finds out  ;)

The teeth on the front don't do much, but they look cool. I'd replace the wheels with Hypnos, personally. Or Technos.
Title: Re: Drgnslyr's DSL Showcase
Post by: drgnslyr on September 07, 2010, 12:39:52 PM
without the ballasts, it lifts the front end up when the beta motor is fired, and ive tweaked it a little, and took some screenies.

Why doesnt Naryar like Ballasts, if theyre to keep the bot stable? its the whole point of them?

Ant batteries act as ballasts, are lighter and give extra power.

yeah, switched to Razor tips, I was actually getting around 40-80 if an bot was pressed up against them, with a bit of sideways movement, and ive gotten 100-ish in a ram (speed is alright with the NPC's, i cant remember if theyre fasts or not, though)

It turns ridiculously fast, and having switched to the spring beta motor, it really does lift the front end up when its fired....

1) Too much empty space
2) Bad wheel choice
    Good Wheel Choices:
    Hypnos,
    Technos,
    Vlads,
    WBCs,
    Wide Ant Wheels,
3) Is that a spring loaded beta? If so, its underpowered, needs 25 ants
4) Front spikes aren't much use
5) Use multi extenders instead of baseplate anchors (lighter & smaller)
6) Needs more hammers, or atleast a70kg one
7) Use door hinge wedges instead of skirt hinge ones
8) Don't use ballasts, EVER, if you really need ballast, use ant batts

1) Too much empty space Yes
2) Bad wheel choice Yes
    Good Wheel Choices:
    Hypnos,
Technos, These are best for this bot
    Vlads,
    WBCs,
    Wide Ant Wheels,
3) Is that a spring loaded beta? If so, its underpowered, needs 25 ants But 5 PCwhatevers are probably too much actually
4) Front spikes aren't much use but they help protect it, he could do with a weapon rack as armour
5) Use multi extenders instead of baseplate anchors (lighter & smaller) Yes
6) Needs more hammers, or atleast a70kg one Or many small weapons
7) Use door hinge wedges instead of skirt hinge ones Yes
8) Don't use ballasts, EVER, if you really need ballast, use ant batts Or weapons

right, ill probs stick some armour on the front then, either titanium halfplate, or something...

Cheers for all the Info, didnt realise Ant batteries actually affect balance, I knew the others didnt, from trying to use them as such...
I didnt realise multi extenders could be mounted on the baseplate, either...

Right, ill go stick the heaviest hammer possible onn.

Actually, strike the above, ill just rebuild it with that info in mind, heheh, cheers ;)

Expect more screenies of KaotiKa 2.0 ina bout half an hour :)

Right.

(https://gametechmods.com/uploads/images/12944screenie 4.jpg)

Those Ant batts are stacked, like 4 or 5 on each side...
I dont think im gonna get 25, like...

Title: Re: Drgnslyr's DSL Showcase
Post by: martymidget on September 07, 2010, 03:39:04 PM
Dont stack batteries in DSL. Its asking for flaming.

If its a geared beta, it only needs one ant. If Spring loaded, what vertigo is said is true.

Im not brill at hammers, so lets let somebody else do the rest.
Title: Re: Drgnslyr's DSL Showcase
Post by: drgnslyr on September 07, 2010, 03:45:32 PM
Right, ok, il unstack asap.

and yeah, its spring, so ill need a lot, which is why i was stacking. could use the space either side of the spring beta, though, tbh.

Ive got 17 ant bats, there... cant fit anymore, unfortunately...

A CO2 powered version would be sweet.....

I might try a crusher-style bot...

*dreams of Razor*

*EDIT*
Talking of Razor, the one in the DSL mod, is a mix of two versions, the Srimech was added at the same time as the front wedge was added, IIRC, and the wheels where changed, too....
Title: Re: Drgnslyr's DSL Showcase
Post by: SKBT on September 07, 2010, 07:34:21 PM
It would be lighter to use 3 PC645s and two ants. (143 vs 162.5) Also a bot like that is going to be über fast without enough weapon.  Try 2 NPC fasts with technos and try to get enough power in the bot and if you have enough weight add more weapons or armor.
Title: Re: Drgnslyr's DSL Showcase
Post by: drgnslyr on September 08, 2010, 02:13:38 AM
hmmm, k. I was using Ants because i needed to keep the front end down when the hammer fired, but i might just switch back to DSL Hammer 3, and use those bat configs, and a bit more armour...

Although theres still too much free space in the chassis, so that could be cut down, i guess. Only problem witht that is that it removes all the components. I wish there was a way to edit chassis size without removing the components, I wonder if theres a 3rd party tool that does that?
Title: Re: Drgnslyr's DSL Showcase
Post by: NFX on September 08, 2010, 02:35:36 AM
Unfortunately not. but with a bit of practice, it becomes a bit easier to guage how the components will lie in the chassis before you build it.
Title: Re: Drgnslyr's DSL Showcase
Post by: Naryar on September 08, 2010, 02:56:28 AM
You don't need more than 2WD NPC Fast with techno wheels on a hammer.

You will also need a wedge, to prevent bots from getting under, and front protection, to protect from HS or rammers or etc.

EDIT: I do believe you can edit chassis size without removing components with bot file editing, but even I apostle of BFE don't know how to make it. ACAMS, Click or Madiaba might though.

Ask 123. He used BFE to mathematically plot the points for his SnS (I think it was Morning Star).
Title: Re: Drgnslyr's DSL Showcase
Post by: Naryar on September 08, 2010, 03:11:34 AM
123 just moved the baseplate points when the chassis is not built, but the baseplate imprint is. It's MUCH easier than changing an already-built chassis.

Hmm, righto.

Ill have a look at it.

Whats used to decompile the .bot?
or is it simply changed to .txt and opened with notepad?

dp.

Oh, and btw, by wedge, you mean a skirt, or physical wedge component?

Im guessing Skirt....
Title: Re: Drgnslyr's DSL Showcase

Skirt here.

You do not have to decompile bot files, just open them with notepad.

bot file editing, i think.

And i thought that was only for custom bots, not dsl?
Title: Re: Drgnslyr's DSL Showcase

i'll just go with that. it is DSL and such. custom is mainly custom components and such, i think.

Right, well, ive completely redone Kaotika again, replaced the Beta with a Piston-enhanced JX Burst, and gone 2WD with NPC's, and Tit skirts on the front, polycarb on the back...

(https://gametechmods.com/uploads/images/26594screenie 5.jpg)

I saw one of Naryar's that was a lot like this, and based this off of it, so the design is basically one of Naryar's, with some differences (basically how the skirts are mounted, really.
Title: Re: Drgnslyr's DSL Showcase
Post by: Naryar on September 09, 2010, 03:49:27 AM
Add 2 ants, and use a skirt hinge rather than this overly heavy rear stabilizer extender work.

It also is underweight it seems ?
Title: Re: Drgnslyr's DSL Showcase
Post by: drgnslyr on September 09, 2010, 04:14:57 AM
yeah, about 520, with 10mm steel armour...

tbh, i dont think HW should be from 400 to 800, maybe 550 to 800, but oh well, what can you do, eh?
Title: Re: Drgnslyr's DSL Showcase
Post by: drgnslyr on September 09, 2010, 04:30:13 AM
actually, having just looked at it, its 720, so its not too much underweight

Post by: drgnslyr on September 09, 2010, 04:34:05 AM
ive just tried it out, and... its complete crap :/

whe turning, it topples over, i think the burst motor isnt mounted properly :/
Title: Re: Drgnslyr's DSL Showcase
Post by: Pwnator on September 09, 2010, 05:01:24 AM
Nope. It's because your stance is too small for a HW. Make it longer and wider so it won't steer like a drunk.
Title: Re: Drgnslyr's DSL Showcase
Post by: Naryar on September 09, 2010, 05:27:32 AM
On a HW you should be able to mount 2 piston enhanced hammers.

10mm steel is also weight wasted.
Title: Re: Drgnslyr's DSL Showcase
Post by: drgnslyr on September 09, 2010, 05:59:17 AM
Its only got 10mm steel because I set all bots to 10mm steel so i know i can have my pick of armour, and then add extra weapons if i have weight left over.
Title: Re: Drgnslyr's DSL Showcase
Post by: Somebody on September 09, 2010, 06:16:11 AM
10mm steel is wasting a huge amount of weight though. Use the weight for more weapons, its put to better use that way.
Title: Re: Drgnslyr's DSL Showcase
Post by: drgnslyr on September 09, 2010, 05:52:41 PM
Yeah, im gonna swith it for something lighter, try and cut a bit of weight, get it under 400 for use in Middleweight...
