Hello there, i'm a new user, please gib constructive criticism, i suck at english, blah blah blah, let's just get to the showcase.
First bot goes right here:

I've been playing RA2 for a bit now, though this little thingy is one of my first DSL builds. I just damn love the mod, makes the game approximately 14.2 times better.
The bot is intended as a lightweight flipper, supposed to be fairly realistic (as all my builds are). Effective against bots around the same weight, that burst motor packs a punch. Could be way better but sadly i can't just cut out that free space. Oh, and it has Titanium 5 armor.
-
Hey, doesn't look bad for a beginner; it looks like you have the basics down. Maybe consider using fewer, heavier batteries rather than many lighter ones? And maybe make the chassis slightly lower so the bot is invertible? And I see a couple of the ants are intersecting the wheels, I think you should try to fix that.
-
Fewer heavier batteries wouldn't fit, and without bot file editing i can't make it any lower. Also the ants are intersecting, i know, but after all if it were irl then i would most presumably make the wheels thinner. Considering slapping these GrannyGuard wheels or whatever they were called, i really like them but i never can really remember the name. Maybe removing the angled aesthetic flipper parts would free up the weight for an axle extension?

It looks like you may be able to get a couple of black batteries above the drive motors, but I'm not entirely sure. Looks solid for a first bot though.
-
not bad my man

The bot's sides are diamond-shaped, aka angled from both sides. if we could rotate parts on other axis than Y then i could easily do it.
Working on a recreation of my old rammer, literally uttered a quiet evil laugh as i noticed E-Teks have a drive variant.

Thank you!

Ah. I didn't notice that. You could move the drive motors out slightly further and use thinner wheels. The issue is that ant batteries are pretty awful in DSL 2.2 and the Front hinge burst pistons that you're using for the weapon use up a lot of power. In terms of principle though the bot is very nice.
-
Is the height of the bot glitchmin? It's hard to tell since the whole robot is sloped.
In case you didn't know, if you click on the very bottom pixel of the height slider instead of sliding it down, the height will be lower than simply sliding it down.

A quad thwacker, yay! Might look weak but it deals a lot of damage.
-
Needs more weaponry for a LW. Try reducing the battery to a single intercooled (the red one), and maybe reducing the drive to TWMRs. Maybe 2 stronger weapons on 2 arms would be better than 4 weak weapons on 4 arms, but maybe you want to keep it with 4 for the aesthetic, idk.
-
It does fairly well against most LWs. Beater bars swing at bottom-most parts of bots, flinging them around/reducing their wedges to pulp/severely damaging the chassis. But i'll do as you say and see if it's effective.
And why the hell alt-tabbing screws up the botlab?!
EDIT:

And why the hell alt-tabbing screws up the botlab?!
That's one of RA2's quirks. To unscrew it, get out of the botlab and then get in again.
That bot seems a bit tall to me for a LW SnS. Remember, lower to the ground = more stable as a rule of thumb. Maybe get smaller wheels, and you can get rid of the ant batteries too.
-
not bad, you know of the botlab height glitch and ra2cf?
-
Height glitch afaik is clicking the bottom of the slider. RA2cf i never have heard of.
-

You can also quickly move the cursor down from the top.
RA2cf i never have heard of.
It's a building utility. You can get it here: https://gametechmods.com/forums/index.php?topic=18939.0
The tool is mostly used on artbots/IRL bots. If you understand the botlab's limits enough you can do thing's with RA2cf that are legal in competitive metas.
-
I doubt I'll use the RA2CF. I want to build realistic bots, but stacking and such would make it harder. Does realistic building allow something like 'build whatever you want as long as you don't stack electronic and motors, and as long it makes sense' ? Sadly, doubt so. Also people would call me a cheater.

RA2CF is actually better for IRL building. Just don't plonk stuff in stupid locations (like stacked batteries and intersecting motors) and make it look great and you're good!"
-
So stacking bars and armor and such is legit, as well as parts poking through the baseplate to an extent? If so, RA2CF is a new, permanent addition to my RA2 install.
EDIT: how the heck my phone mistook 'left' for 'legit'?
-
Yes, basically if you could cut slots and/or weld together plates and extenders. You could also put electronics outside of the RA2 chassis where you have polycarb pannels so they will show when fighting.
Example:

-
(https://gametechmods.com/uploads/images/14612Screenshot_5.png)
The Perms aren't touching, but dumb collision mesh would make game think they are. (Ignoring odd collision meshes and relying on the part model mesh)
The extenders are not moving, just 'combined'. (Non-moving part intersections)
The spiky poles are stacked, but something like that would make sense in my opinion. (Stacks that would make sense irl)
Are these things legal in realistic building?
-
Yes
-
Clue's in the name, man. So long as it's possible in reality, it's permissible.
-
In other words, you're allowed to use glitches as long as the end result is still realistic.
-
I would think that the stacked clubs wouldn't be, since that would do double damage. Other stuff is fine though.

What if the weapons have normals?

Have a god-knows-what. (HS?)
Yes, that disc is insanely fragile, but does better than a saw. If the teeth break off you still have a wannabe rammer.
-
Have you tried a hex plate instead of the dsl disc. That way you save weight on the disc to put towards weapons, and allows for either more damaging teeth or a greater number.
I would personally downgrade your drive motors as well for better fit. That also frees up weight for armor and weapons. Maybe add wheelguards and/or a seimech instead.
-
Hex plate? I have to try it.
Downgrading motors would make it slower (duh), it's supposed to be rather fast. But i can try.
-
You see, now that's unrealistic, because it would be impossible to get those drive motors into place that cleanly. Either adjust the skin accordingly, or change the drive motors (I think that would be for the best, as that'd also give you more weight to spend on the weaponry.)
Also, try being inspired by some robots that already exist IRL. If you're going for a HS, look at some other HS that are out there, see what you like the look of, and then try and emulate it.
-

Wait a second, i have to make the skin make sense too?
*groan*
I hate using in-game editor or Gimp for it, has anyone made a good skin editor for RA2?
-
I like the skin as it looks like The Sims plumbob
-
Have you thought about angling the weapon motor? That way when your wedgelets get under a bot it goes right into the teeth.
-
(https://gametechmods.com/uploads/images/67407Screenshot_8.png)
Screw wedges.
Screw spinners.
Screw rammers.
I FRIGGIN LOVE FLIPPERS.
(Also is that what you meant by editing the skin to make it look properly?)
-
Yeah, that'll do - could be prettier, but the hole in the chassis matches up with where the flipper would be when fired, which is the main thing.
...Flipper's a bit small though, isn't it? Also, what's the weight and insides?
-
I know it could be prettier, but I can't toss bot editor and image editor together to make a skin in realtime.
It's a LW, just 300 grams short of the weight limit. Flipper is enough for most lightweight opponents. Also, it's less of flipper and more of a forklift, decided to carry bots out of arena and toss them out.
PC BSoD'd on me, sadly, so no botfile. It had a single red battery, motors are right angle drive magmotors, it also is armored with titanium 3mm (my standard armor choice for lightweights).
EDIT: now that I think about it, by removing all the useless empty space and reducing amount of armor I might be able to take it all the way down to BW without downgrading the drive.
-
I know it could be prettier, but I can't toss bot editor and image editor together to make a skin in realtime.
You can press the windows key and move between your image editing program and RA2.
-
Damn it, i want to play the game but i have absolutely no idea on what kind of bot should i make. Ideas, anyone?
-
clamp
-
You can try a VS/dustpan with a single sledgehammer for the VS weapon.
-
Gonna do exactly that, but with two sledgehammers. Single sledgehammer sounds.... havoky.
EDIT: Screw that, gonna try for a double VS with two bars, each having 2 hammers.
-
Well, mostly went away from the original idea. But still, it's a VS.
(https://gametechmods.com/uploads/images/19114Bez tytułu.png)
The AX-01 Titan (see what i did there?).
Ten milimeters of solid titanium for armoring the 'core' of this beast, but component armor (around three hundred kilos worth of steel and titanium!) makes it far from fragile. Designed as a 'tanky' VS.
Drive: two NPCs (normal)
Weapons: two 4x fire axe 'discs' on reinforced EL perm 80s
Armor: yes
Power: mini control unit and two 'long' batteries
Also, actually it's an IRL build. None of the components intersect, and where armor plates touch the motors or dig into the chassis, you could easily cut them to fit.
Made with looks in mind, but it's fairly effective as well.
EDIT: Waaaagh i screwed up. Not exactly an IRL build, forgot to add the bars which would support the motors. They were in the prototype though, imagine they are there ;)
-
First of all, don't use Fire Axe heads because they do less possible damage compared to more powerful teeth like the steel teeth and the Typhoon Teeth; I try to avoid using the support perms for IRL bots because the weight is unnecessary because you can make your Robot lighter by using anchors and extenders to fake support the perm; also what batteries are you using I know you're saying the batteries long but what are the actual batteries, I keep thinking of either the blacks or the battle packs; and what's your Armour type by any chance (it might help if you post a screenshot of the insides).
I'm not the best person for advice, but I hope it does help.
-

However, your axle will appear to be floating when that support is gone, and that is ew

I didn't think this straight through about perms, sorry for any trouble caused with the advice.
-
Long batteries. Aka 'blacks'. Two of them. Battlepacks are battlepacks.
Can't send a pic of insides because of so much armor being slapped onto the bot that i would have to disassemble it. Can do but give me a hour or so ;)
Fire axes seem to be legit 'amount of firepower' for this bot, though sure i can try with the teeth. The catch with fire axes is that it now slightly resembles these concrete cutting blades. Why nobody added them to DSL? We only have sawblades.
...now on that topic, why do we only have saws and 'chewblades' (which are saws too)? Making concrete cutting and grinding discs/blades should be relatively simple.
-

They're also very ineffective IRL, you wouldn't usually see one on a combat robot. There is the Potter's Wheel grinding disc - it deals pretty mediocre damage but has great HP so it's good for a tanky robot.
I agree with the others: this bot would look better with Typhoon teeth or maybe the big ripping teeth, and would also do more damage. Your armour seems a little excessive too (which feels weird coming from a guy who also builds tanky bots...) You can definitely save a little weight on armour and beef up your weapons and supports more.
Finally, the wedges aren't very IRL. Try swapping them for some steel or titanium extender wedges (you can find them under beater bars in the Weapons tab). They'll look better, they jsut be just as effective, and they also deal a little damage at the same time.
Looks promising though! I'd like to see it upgraded.
-
With CF you can layer saw blades on top of each other, and if you swap attachment point sides the teeth go in opposite directions and give a concrete saw look. Gets heavy though.
-
ALRIGHT, job for today is making the Titan II. Lemme see. Make it less bulky? Can do. Modified weapon? Sure. Bah, I might be even able to pack it under MW if i'll do it well.
...is the name Titan II taken?
-
Nyaaaaah! Titan's blueprints lost due to virus randomly deleting my sh**, it's getting irritating. Anyway, made this little dustpan-esque wedge/VS/sawbot thing:
Fairly effective against rammers and spinning stuff but fails miserably against, well, everything else. Any idea on how i could improve the design?
Armor is Titanium 5mm, and a ramplate for butt protection~

I really like the look of this, though I recommend having some wheel guards, also moving the wheels further back so it can roll back over using the discs and I think the motors might need some protection. But overall it's a good concept just needs refining. Hope this helps
-
I don't think you need rear protection, you're not going to get attacked there (unless you're getting shoved into the sawblades in the tournament arena, and that shouldn't be happening either). I'd remove the ramplate and put a couple of wedges on the front, for getting under opponents. I agree with Hoppin about the motors as well, they need some kind of protection for this to be IRL.
-
I could always go and turn on 'attachment point hermaphroditism' in RA2CF. That way I could attach stuff to the sides of motors for example, and make many more things possible, but I dunno if it's okay with ya guys.

If it's for IRL building then it should be perfectly acceptable.

ISN'T IT CUTE?!
(Plastic 3, two copals, two big ant wheels, smallest saw, a battlepack, right angle magmotor, extender anchor, 20cm aluminium extender, the big control board. That's everything. Makes for a fun-to-use BW sawbot at 124-ish kilos... was 125 limit for BW or 175?..)
EDIT: it's an antweight, playing on IF screwed the weightclasses up for me
-
You built an AW: AW is 125kg, BW is 175.
-
HOLY sh** DRAE MADE TWO UPLOADS IN ONE DAY?
Yes.
This thing is so small that it havoks, i tried to get under the nonexistent 75kg weight class.
-
You could always give the robot more weapons and enter it into the Fleaweight class. Whatever that weight class looks like now.
