Drae-chan's DSL Basement
« on: January 18, 2017, 12:47:49 PM »
Hello there, i'm a new user, please gib constructive criticism, i suck at english, blah blah blah, let's just get to the showcase.

First bot goes right here:

I've been playing RA2 for a bit now, though this little thingy is one of my first DSL builds. I just damn love the mod, makes the game approximately 14.2 times better.

The bot is intended as a lightweight flipper, supposed to be fairly realistic (as all my builds are). Effective against bots around the same weight, that burst motor packs a punch. Could be way better but sadly i can't just cut out that free space. Oh, and it has Titanium 5 armor.

Hey, doesn't look bad for a beginner; it looks like you have the basics down. Maybe consider using fewer, heavier batteries rather than many lighter ones? And maybe make the chassis slightly lower so the bot is invertible? And I see a couple of the ants are intersecting the wheels, I think you should try to fix that.

Fewer heavier batteries wouldn't fit, and without bot file editing i can't make it any lower. Also the ants are intersecting, i know, but after all if it were irl then i would most presumably make the wheels thinner. Considering slapping these GrannyGuard wheels or whatever they were called, i really like them but i never can really remember the name. Maybe removing the angled aesthetic flipper parts would free up the weight for an axle extension?

It looks like you may be able to get a couple of black batteries above the drive motors, but I'm not entirely sure. Looks solid for a first bot though.

The bot's sides are diamond-shaped, aka angled from both sides. if we could rotate parts on other axis than Y then i could easily do it.
Working on a recreation of my old rammer, literally uttered a quiet evil laugh as i noticed E-Teks have a drive variant.

Thank you!

Ah. I didn't notice that. You could move the drive motors out slightly further and use thinner wheels. The issue is that ant batteries are pretty awful in DSL 2.2 and the Front hinge burst pistons that you're using for the weapon use up a lot of power. In terms of principle though the bot is very nice.

Is the height of the bot glitchmin? It's hard to tell since the whole robot is sloped.

In case you didn't know, if you click on the very bottom pixel of the height slider instead of sliding it down, the height will be lower than simply sliding it down.

Needs more weaponry for a LW. Try reducing the battery to a single intercooled (the red one), and maybe reducing the drive to TWMRs. Maybe 2 stronger weapons on 2 arms would be better than 4 weak weapons on 4 arms, but maybe you want to keep it with 4 for the aesthetic, idk.

It does fairly well against most LWs. Beater bars swing at bottom-most parts of bots, flinging them around/reducing their wedges to pulp/severely damaging the chassis. But i'll do as you say and see if it's effective.

And why the hell alt-tabbing screws up the botlab?!

That's one of RA2's quirks. To unscrew it, get out of the botlab and then get in again.

That bot seems a bit tall to me for a LW SnS. Remember, lower to the ground = more stable as a rule of thumb. Maybe get smaller wheels, and you can get rid of the ant batteries too.

You can also quickly move the cursor down from the top.

RA2cf i never have heard of.

It's a building utility. You can get it here: https://gametechmods.com/forums/index.php?topic=18939.0
The tool is mostly used on artbots/IRL bots. If you understand the botlab's limits enough you can do thing's with RA2cf that are legal in competitive metas.

I doubt I'll use the RA2CF. I want to build realistic bots, but stacking and such would make it harder. Does realistic building allow something like 'build whatever you want as long as you don't stack electronic and motors, and as long it makes sense' ? Sadly, doubt so. Also people would call me a cheater.

RA2CF is actually better for IRL building. Just don't plonk stuff in stupid locations (like stacked batteries and intersecting motors) and make it look great and you're good!"

So stacking bars and armor and such is legit, as well as parts poking through the baseplate to an extent? If so, RA2CF is a new, permanent addition to my RA2 install.

EDIT: how the heck my phone mistook 'left' for 'legit'?

Yes, basically if you could cut slots and/or weld together plates and extenders. You could also put electronics outside of the RA2 chassis where you have polycarb pannels so they will show when fighting.

Example:

The Perms aren't touching, but dumb collision mesh would make game think they are. (Ignoring odd collision meshes and relying on the part model mesh)
The extenders are not moving, just 'combined'. (Non-moving part intersections)
The spiky poles are stacked, but something like that would make sense in my opinion. (Stacks that would make sense irl)

Are these things legal in realistic building?
