Title: Celestial Panda's Showcase
Post by: Celestial Panda on March 12, 2012, 11:35:31 AM
Hey there, I'm Celestial Panda. I've been lurking around a year, playing RA2 for two. DSL's a great improvement on the original game, wonderful for building all kinds of things!

As someone who is still lamenting the loss of Robot Wars, I like to build things similar to what you'd see on the show, I just wish flippers were better in this game. Is there a method to building very powerful flipper-bots?

So I hope you like the robots I've built! I still need to learn patience, and the best way to line up motors for symmetrical-ness. I also overpower them, but that's because I like to put battles on for 5 minutes and want to be prepared.

Flipping Out
Armour: Titanium 1.
Power: Entirely too many batteries. Put in the Red battery for the flippers, but I don't think that's right.
Drive: TWM3R Drive. It's still a little slow for my tastes, but gets the job done I guess.

(https://gametechmods.com/uploads/images/76552Flipping Out - OOTA.png)

Saw Point
Armour: Aluminium 1. This is a terrible choice, I know. This bot needs a slight tuneup. =P
Power: Still entirely too many batteries. It's also really easy to stack the orange ones, so I do that quite a lot, so there might be even more hidden there.
Drive: NPC-T64s, wonderfully fast and keep me pretty close to the ground.
There's a Schrimech made with two bursts and two perspex extenders. It tends to Self-Right too well, putting me back on my back sometimes.

Very nice robots for a newcomer. I'll be looking forward to see more.

Also welcome to forums.

The major thing (rushed as I have to leave) - spin motors only need 1 ant battery each, however beta bursts need >20. There is a guide to this somewhere, hopefully someone nice can link you up.

looks pretty cool, liking the dual weapon system on the first bot. otherwise it isn't great :P
and you would need about 46 ant batteries to power the first bot or a few of the really tall black batteries. and npc drive is better for a heavyweight.

for the second bot, you can get rid of a burst motor and have 2 arms coming off one motor and get rid of all the ants except about  9. and it needs better armour choice as you said (the first bot could do with thicker armour aswell).
if you're using wedges then you'd want to go for metal hinge wedges. and there are way better weapon choices and even armour choices (the extra wide ramplate isn't that great iirc)

On the second bot, are those mag burst motors? if so then change them to bsg's.
and if you want a better flipper then you can go with judge burst motors (cheatbot2), you need atleast 30kg on them so they dont go crazy and havok everywhere iirc

Post by: Mr. AS on March 12, 2012, 11:47:19 AM
30 kg ramplates and mag snappers suck hard
aluminum is pretty awful as well
sideways pole spikes also seem pretty pointless, if you're going to do that, at least put on a weapon with no normals like irons/razors/etc.

Interesting designs there. I like your style.

Made some tweaks. I think it's running a Titanium, but might be Plastic 3, I forget how to check. Less Ants (10), and looks a little more visually pleasing while being more armoured thanks to the DSL bars. (The spikes are for aesthetics more than anything). The Schrimechs are a lesser motor, so now it doesn't flail wildly when self-righting XD

It does have this issue where driving forwards, it just veers to the right. I've another bot that does the same thing, maybe I'm a lop-sided builder? As far as I can tell one of the Perm-80s sinks through the chassis more than the other.

Looks nice. Only thing I can think now is a little bit of chassis shrinking to get some more weight for more substantial weapons :P

Flipping Out II
Power - 2 Large Blacks, 24 Ants.
Armour - Titanium 3.
Uses regular NPCs, and rubber wheels. I tried Hypnos and Micros, but I want more speed, and cant really get it. I guess I should lower the armour..

I think it needs more power? It's too slow for my liking, but if a robot can go Out Of The Arena, it will. Sometimes the force causes my robot to do a forwards flip XD
So far it's beaten Grog, Wide Load, UnDeadbeat all in the RW Arena.

have you tried making something that's  invertible? its the one thing that will automatically troll a flipper (hovercraft engines are not a robot type.)
Title: Re: Celestial Panda's Showcase
Post by: Celestial Panda on March 22, 2012, 11:51:03 AM
I do have an invertible robot ready to show, but it's at a PC I'm unable to reach for a week or so.
Flipping Out tends not to care if you're invertible (and it's in an arena where you can go OOTA) ;P

Getting better. There's a few things you can do to make it better, though. For starters, the flipper skirts you're using are VERY flimsy. Ideally you want Titanium, or preferably Steel. For a faster bot, you probably need NPC Fasts, and Hypno Wheels to give reduced ground clearance. It also looks as though you could reduce the height of the chassis to get the weight you need, you can have the top part of the Beta Burst, with the gear and flipper part sticking out of the top, thanks to the collision mesh. Perhaps you could try swapping a few ants, which seem to be eating up quite a lot of weight for a couple more of the tall batteries. A Beta Burst requires 17 ants for full power, IIRC. Or 21. I forget. The tall batteries are the equivelant of six ants for less weight.
Title: Re: Celestial Panda's Showcase
Post by: Naryar on March 22, 2012, 01:05:58 PM
Needs to be faster.
Title: Re: Celestial Panda's Showcase
Post by: Celestial Panda on March 22, 2012, 02:02:58 PM
Yes it does. The rebuild that's taking part in RIWS3 is much faster with 4 wheels, 4 black bats and ants to make sure it's fully powered.
Interesting about the flipper skirts, I thought I remembered a post that said; The lighter the thing on a burst, the more "powerful" the flipper. That's why I went for Polycarb skirts, I've noticed they fall off a lot though, so I will try Titanium or Steel, definitely.
Title: Re: Celestial Panda's Showcase
Post by: NFX on March 22, 2012, 02:16:18 PM
That's true, but the Beta Burst is so damn powerful, that you could have a 120cm Angled Steel Skirt, and easily throw the opponent into the air with a pair of them. Provided you've got enough batteries. And the Poly Skirts you're using have a disastrous HP to Weight ratio, for some reason all the skirts of the same material have the same HP. So the 40cm skirts are twice as strong per unit weight as the 80cm skirts.

Q: What happens when you take Typhoon's chassis, and attempt to build a robot without changing it's shape or height?
A: Typhoon DSL! HW, lots of power, Plastic 1 (I think). It likes to veer right when moving forwards.
(https://gametechmods.com/uploads/images/55471Typhoon - Build Area.png)

Rotated Sheck parts are so that it reaches the floor (sort of), but it also looks kinda cool so a double whammy!

And then I made a MW version of it too:
(https://gametechmods.com/uploads/images/50283Cyclone - Build Area.png)
Same chassis, 392kg, less damaging but more IRL.

Not effective at all, scoops suck against wedges 'n' jazz. Also, if you spin on the spot it gets unstable. But firing the axe doesn't make it lift up much, so there's that.

New robot!

If it's IRL, you may want to improve your skin.
Title: Re: Celestial Panda's Showcase
Post by: NFX on April 07, 2012, 03:59:54 PM
If it's IRL, you might want to think about the MOE Motor. It's much longer than the Perm EL, so that'll allow you to avoid the unrealisticness.
Title: Re: Celestial Panda's Showcase
Post by: Celestial Panda on April 07, 2012, 04:05:49 PM
I think I wish this was IRL but in the end was just kinda cool. It's not even as effective as Vengence, which makes me sad.

it's not IRL since it's unrealistic.

Forgot to put it on the splash, but has Titanium 3 I think.
Title: Re: Celestial Panda's Showcase
Post by: NFX on April 18, 2012, 01:58:22 PM
Looks decent. What I would do is remove the rear assembly, that's eating up a huge chink of weight that could either be used for batteries (flippers like this need as much battery power as you can get), or some more drive, it looks quite slow at the moment. And try to get metal hinge wedges as opposed to skirt hinges, they're generally stronger for getting under your opponents. And don't overlap the flippers like that. It compromises the wedginess of them, and it makes it easier for you to be flanked, like what happened in RIW3.
Title: Re: Celestial Panda's Showcase
Post by: Celestial Panda on April 19, 2012, 09:27:50 AM
I've been watching a lot of old Robot Wars (Seasons 1 to 4), so I tried even harder to keep to an IRL standard.

Henry: Judge burst powered flipper strong enough to lift even a heavyweight! It likes to push and it likes to zip around the arena. Strength is its massive flipper, weaknesses are an uncontrollability and a tendency to flip itself over, leaving it vulnerable. Let's hope it's better than the vacuum cleaner!
(https://gametechmods.com/uploads/images/95814Henry - Build Area 1.png)
(https://gametechmods.com/uploads/images/79962Henry - Build Area 2.png)

Ramp Trap: Taking cues from Mousetrap (http://robotwars.wikia.com/wiki/Mousetrap) this robot is long with skirts to upend it's opponent from all angles. A terrifying lifting spinning blade will chew up opponents, and doubles as a Schrimech! Don't get trapped, or it's curtains!
(https://gametechmods.com/uploads/images/8228Ramp Trap - Battle.png)
(https://gametechmods.com/uploads/images/37961Ramp Trap - Build Area.png)

Scorpion: Scorpion by name, Scorpion by nature! It may not be the fastest in it's weightclass but with a clinging, tangling front and a dangerous 'spike' tail will leave you feeling the pinch. Can also self-right, but is slow to do so.

I know efficiency isn't important here, but I really just have to say that ramp trap doesn't that flipper segment next the motor. It's 3 kg saved and the piglet has 8000(?) hp anyway.

They're not IRL-ish are they. I was definitely building an IRL bot though, so I suppose if I ever enter an IRL competition with it I'll take the hinges off for more power or something.

IRL Design + Metal Hinges = Poor Show. But don't worry, I say that to literally anyone who does it. :gawe:

It looks like a pretty good IRL design, I reckon. Although the Frenzy hammer looks quite out of place there, I might swap it for something like a series of flipper segments and a Lightning Tooth on the end, maybe. Something that would better match the flipper and the overall design.

797.8 is weight, I'll try fix the blurring in future splashes.
Spiked Cheese is IRL, the vlad spikes are an attempt to weight it down further.
Dragon's Rage was IRL until I extended the beater bars to pass through the motor supports >>

797.8 is weight, I'll try fix the blurring in future splashes.

If you save your pictures as PNG, rather than JPG, that will solve the blurring. JPGs are largely for photographs, where blurriness might not be an issue, so they're quite a lossy format. For the sort of screenshots and splashes you see here, PNG's give much higher quality for roughly the same file size.

It looks a little better in action. The problem was I made the back-arch-thing first, then had no idea how to connect it all up to something pretty. Download it here for yourselves. (https://gametechmods.com/Robot_Exchange/DSL_HW/celestial%20panda_Gatekeeper.bot)
The wheels do intersect, could I argue they look a bit like tracks (and the movement is similar) just to keep  them?
(Edit: Oh, and yes, it self-rights fine Kurt)

Also, I made an update to Blue Raptr:
(https://gametechmods.com/uploads/images/23474Orange Raptr.png)
I call it Orange Raptr. There's slightly less armour, (Tite 5 I think) to make way for 4WD, and spikes that do just enough to stop it being useless on it's side.
