Title: The Ranking System
Post by: Sage on May 27, 2009, 11:15:23 PM
I know this idea has been touched upon but i thought it might actually be a good idea. I introduce...

THE RANKING SYSTEM

For a few months now, I've been enjoying telling my friends that I'm one of the best at RA2 in the world. Some of you may think this true, some may not, but I think I'm up there. I know some other vets probably do the same at times. However, I feel it would be good to legitimize things. There's ranking systems for almost every online game out there. Why can't RA2 have one?

Here's how it would work:

The community votes on three categories. These three categories are TOP 10 Stock Builders, TOP 10 DSL Builders, and TOP 10 Programmers/Contributors. Please note that only ACTIVE members are eligible. For the people who have left, there is also The TOP 10 Members Gone Missing.

The community nominates people for one month, and at the end of that week the top 10 nominees will be chosen. They will then be listed out and the community votes on the order.

Of course, after these nominations, people can move up, down, or even lose their spot to someone else. How this would work is that every month people can nominate a change and then the community can vote on it. So, you better have a good persuading argument!

I have my nominations ready, but I want community support for this before I go on. I know there are some that don't like the idea of a ranking system, so please post your thoughts here.

Sounds good, and since it is a democratic decisions, any flame wars may be less intense. It also seems important to note that its really just for fun. There is no real point in getting all worked up about it.

I was going to criticize this on the BBEANS thread earlier but after reading this, I think this could work Sage.

However, a quick question, how many people can we nominate for each category (if its only one and every choses the same five, for example, then its not a top ten but too many makes the vote counting longer).

How do we define active builder, I mean someone like Firebeetle isn't posting any more, but he's still building bots (for BBEANS at least)?  I think we should probably set a time zone for active and unactive builder (maybe a year or so)

sounds like a good idea, I doubt I will make top 10 on any though lol, maybe put all the ladders in the one thread and get ACAMS to pin it, maybe to avoid stalemates no one can nominate then selves and perhaps justification for the nomination so its not just favoritism

I think it's a decent idea. I like the idea for seeing where the rest of the community ranks people, because I have a pretty good idea of my top 10 in each category.

Thanks Sage.

Nice idea to have 4 categories too.

A vote is on opinion, kinda. Too much bias, or in other words, it's more like a popularity contest at the moment. We should use something to help, like how many bots are made, how good they are at building, how their bots test in tournaments, you know, that stuff...

Indeed, this is a good idea. This is also a good way to change our members Respect Rating, as the members are nominated, their respect can go up by one, as more people are recognizing them (making the limit to +5 points total or if the member won five times). Fear is something else and would not pertain well with this system however. But i do like it and feel that it would motivate more people to contribute for gametechmods.

Volume of robots made probably shouldn't be directly linked to builder skill.

Lots of bots made of a high quality is better than a lesser volume of high quality bots.
Title: The Ranking System
Post by: Reier on May 28, 2009, 12:43:50 PM
But say a guy who stinks made 13000 bots, and A guy who's good made 20. The guy who stinks would rank higher.
Title: The Ranking System
Post by: Hydro on May 28, 2009, 02:06:48 PM
so let's say you get a high rank via quality over quantity. its that simple.
Title: The Ranking System
Post by: Gigafrost on May 28, 2009, 02:10:37 PM
But who determines this "quality" ?

I would say that Admins and most respected people on this forum should have the right to do that.

^^ you beat me to it, SSG.

either that or already known good builders. unless that is what was meant by "most respected people".

Ok, so it's a popularity contest. That's how they decide the winner of american idol, also how they decide the American President. Something wrong with that? There's enough smart people on this forum so that it would be based more on skill then popularity anyway.
Title: The Ranking System
Post by: System32 on May 28, 2009, 04:33:50 PM
George bush, and for the rest, Obama. See how good that is? And don't get me started on the MPs. Popularity doesn't mean good bots. END OF.

we need a rating team, like giga's RR FR teams.

Could we have judges on Aesthetics, Originality and Combat effectiveness?

(Hey, it's best for a fair system.)
Title: The Ranking System
Post by: Sage on May 28, 2009, 05:18:16 PM
And i already said that there's enough smart people on this forum that it won't be a popularity contest. BOTM seems to work fine.

Better bots could also be feared, however. Just a thought. I also say keep it with Sage's original plans and just do it a top 10 for the week. Kind of like a "BOTM" but a Members of the Week.

anyone watch wrestling ?

they have a thing called the power 25 which people go up and down on the list for a heap of factors, match results, popularity (im talking if your a jerk to everyone you move down) etc and its decided by a group of fair people and it changes after each week maybe something like that for each DSL and Stock

maybe the admins and mods do the deciding :-D

I think ranking them could be a little insulting, I think there should just be a prestigious list for them so they can be noted for all their hard work

S32: Popularity contest? What does that mean, that Inf, Sage and Pys are in everyone's top-5? They're "popular" because they're better than you, me, and close to everyone else in this forum.

Also, Venko and Trovaner would make my top-10.

I think a panel of judges is dumb.
Title: The Ranking System

No popularity contest please... I suggest we just post our personal Top10's here (Or send it in secret via PM to Sage), and he will process everything and display the results here.

just one thing .... on a forum like this wouldn't skillful building be the thing that makes you popular ? I mean a completely useless builder wouldn't be the most popular person so in theory popularity wouldn't be much of a problem

Also, i put the outline for the ranks on the first post, so it's easier to get to.

Sage, I have an idea of how this can work!!!

It will be points based.

Say I ranked 10 people:

1.Clickbeetle
2.Sage
3.pys
4.Inf
5.Naryar
6.ACAMS
7.SSG
8.Venko
9.S32
10.Me
(now these ranks mean nothing, so nobody complain)

Rank 1 will get 10 points
Rank 2 will get 9
etc.

The total points decide the rankings.

Good?

I was thinking i would take all the votes for one person and average them out, and then the people with the top ten highest averages would, well, be in the top ten. but that's good too. ill see which one works better.

Every month you can nominate people to move up or down on the list, as well as nominate people to who aren't on the list to replace someone. After a week people will vote yes or know to every nomination made, and we will work it out from there. Still some things I need to figure out, but I'm trying to make it as community driven as I can.
