Title: The Ole' Days When You Were A Noob
Post by: qwertythe300th on April 24, 2012, 07:16:35 PM
Admit It, Everyone here was a RA2 noob at 1 point. I was curious about your noob stories, what was the toughest opponent when you were a noob, first robot, failing when trying to make bots, and more. Well Lemme See, When I Was a noob, I always made replicas. BUT I never knew how to wire em correctly. All my bots just went in circles. so I always used "The Rookies" . So, that's my story. Yours?

I built a robot with 4WD HPZ and thought it was so awesome I'd never make a 4WD HPZ bot again since that'd ruin its legacy

Must've asked about 19 times if Cassius II was going to be in DSL3 back in my day...

You bitches didn't even know what RA2 was yet, and I had a bot with 10 pistons that was totally amazing because it could beat EMERGENCY every time.

That's nothing, I couldn't figure out how to program my robots for about a week. Thought I got cheated.

What can I say?  I was building replicas before it was cool, and convinced that they were good fighters because they could beat almost 50% of their weight class's AI.  I lashed out at Inf and Psych for very stupid reasons, and paid the price.

I made a 3-year bump and my first dsl bots were horrible (but IRL). In Stock, again I built IRL and with custom parts for months before I found GTM.

Does anyone rember Riptec Z?

let's see.
I didn't know how to wire my bots.
I didn't know about attachment points even after having the game for like 6 months.
I was pretty dumb.

I was one of those people who fell into the trapping of having "too realistic" expectations for the game.  How to make a bot go forward, I figured that out in like 5 minutes.  I just couldn't (and still have some trouble to) wrap my brain around making a bot that didn't look feasible from a real life standpoint.

Im The Exact Same Way. Also my 1st replica, discector, *August 2005* Also Only Went In Circles. And I Still Have A Love With Using C.R.U.S.H. , As You Know My Robot C.R.U.S.H. And S.M.A.S.H.

I had the game since it came out and just figured out how to wire bots and use attachment points in like 2006. Every bot I made up until then was a mod of a XTRA or rookie with the same drive and chassis. Either that or hope a bot that just spun in circles would win.

It took me weeks to figure out how wireing works but when I did i started building bots inspired by RW bots. I god a pretty good Beast of Bodmin ripoff that is sadly lost and a Firestorm inspired bot aka DirtDevil

I have everyone beat

On the first bot I made I literally attached all the wheels to axles thinking that the axles were actually motors >_< I didn't know anything about wiring, different attachment points, or how to raise and rotate components. I also always used the mini control board and blue control board on all of my early DSL bots thinking that the blue control board was the receiver for the mini control board.

I think I got you beat.  My first project was a replica of Razer, and I spent hours getting the chassis just right.  Then I mounted the crusher on a baseplate anchor, and tried to use snappers for drive. (didn't know about any patches yet btw)

I remember the time when I started playing RA2. Back in 2008, in the beginning of December I built my very first bot, Spyro. Of course I had no idea that Sawblades sucked in it, I also didn't know how the drive worked, so I kinda used CRUSH very often, and learned later from it how the wiring works. My Second bot was Radiation, HW Flipper which was already very good against Stock AI bots. Then I noticed that My bot needs to have damaging weapons to prevent I would win, so I made Radiation 2 with Ice Pick VS. In the beginning of 2009, I discovered DSL parts, and used them in stock... Joined to GTM in May, and Started Playing DSL in the summer/fall...

Hmm... The similarities are uncanny...

This was my go-to design every time. Ever since it came out way back in 2003, before some of you were able to read. One-hit KOed EMERGENCY on several occasions... Beat the living sh** out of any other bot, easily.

Back before I joined the official forums, I had a standard test to determine if a bot was good or not.

It was this:  If a bot can beat Tornado at least 1 out of 3 fights or so, it's a pretty good fighter.

I'd go to FB and say, "I made a really cool bot, you have to come see it!  It can even sometimes beat Tornado!"  :laughing

Oddly, EMERGENCY was always more of an annoyance than a serious threat.  I'd get tossed around of course but usually ended up winning.

even though i'm probably considered a n00b by most but my worst moments so ar have been a flipper that used the biggest chassis possible, mud tires and 1 motor on a heavyweight flipper with  2wd npc's.
i think my worst mistake though was using custom components and thinking that they were legal for the first 2 months and using a similar test that click used but instead it was against razer because i overestimated the realistic-ness of the game

well, my first bot was R.A.M:
Insides:
https://gametechmods.com/uploads/images/62167R.A.M%20insides.PNG (https://gametechmods.com/uploads/images/62167R.A.M%20insides.PNG)

https://gametechmods.com/uploads/images/18878R.A.M%20outsides.PNG (https://gametechmods.com/uploads/images/18878R.A.M%20outsides.PNG)

and i thought it was so good cause it could beat EMERGENCY. :P

even though R.A.M could beat EMERGENCY he was still the hardest stock matchup for me.

I bought the game so I had to install and stuff but it didn't install right so all the bars in the top looked like 6 big pixels. I had to figure out myself what the Continue, Forfeit and Come back later ones were in tournaments.
I didn't know anything about how to put the components on so I found that if I double clicked the item it would come up, which was a pain in the arse trying to get the HP Z-Tek. I didn't know how to raise/spin components either and found that out by fiddling around with my keyboard. I didn't know how to wire motors so I just thought that it went automatically, but then I looked at C.R.U.S.H. and worked it out. My first bot that I can remember kept flipping itself upside down and wouldn't get back up.

Okay....... here we go:
before i've had DSL, i've tried 30 minutes of stock(because it's the trial version). Back then, i can't even rotate stuff(at first i thought that
by holding shift, it'll rotate by itself, but no, it didn't do that). so, i took Barbershop Chop and then turned it into a sawbot. After that i held a 4 way rumble with some of the stock AI bots( i don't remember who were them but i remembered that Grog was with one of them). After i killed 2 bots, i took on Grog, pinned him into the wall, and then grind him to his death. And then after that the purchase now button come up, and then the 30 minutes of stock was up.

DSL
after i found DSL a few days later, i've become immensely inspired by Hypno-Disc, so i tried to built a Hypno Wheel HS. The bot was so bad that Nary could fly from France to Indonesia, come to my house, and then eat me before killing me(the bot had Long black batts, and piglets for drive, and a whole lot of empty space). So, after i found out how to play as the AI, i took Hypno-Disc and then played as it. Then i held a challenge fight with my friend(whom i have told him 'bout DSL and then played it), so i've lurked through the forums, and then created Le Vertical Disc(pics will be up in my showcase sometime this week). Then, after a few days later, i've decided to join the forums.

My first ever bot was a pusher called Ralph. Steel armour, 4WD redbird, 3 ants, fatboys, and a snowplough on a bsg with an iron spike at the back. MW, of course.

Built with insanely overpowered cheat parts, Built a treaded bot without locking motors and did at least one instance of unnecessary flaming. My n00b showcase is somewhere out there on the GTM fourms http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UQttYepny70# (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UQttYepny70#) the content on this page pretty much tells the tale of most of my n00b days.
Oh i also ripped off other people's designs and made a few tweaks (1 or 2) to make em my own.
