Problems using a avatar

I am trying to get a picture of Razer as my avatar but when I try to save it, it says its either too large or not an avatar. Is there any tutorials on how to make a avatar?

I changed it to 249x249 but it still wouldn't work

It's actually 150x150, I've had a lot of fun cropping and shrinking my various avatars to get them that size
