Portable RA2
« on: January 07, 2017, 09:51:48 PM »

So I was watching this video from LinusTechTips about a portable windows PC that can do some reasonable gaming, and it made me wonder. Snice he's able to play Batman Arkham Asylum at reasonable framerates, and the machine is windows based, what's to stop someone from loading RA2 up on it and having a portable way to play?

Obviously RA2's interface isn't very controller friendly, but hey, it could still be a lot of fun.

Interesting. Playing RA2 just needs a keybord and a functioning mouse.

Yeah, no reason it wouldn't work. I remember something similar to this called the Open pandora years ago, only it was mainly made for emulators. I wonder what happened to that...

If it runs emulators... RA2 will be no problem!

Open Pandora was the first thing I thought of when I saw this too. This thing is running windows and a proper Intel CPU though, where the Pandora ran Linux and a processor that was low end even in 2009. This thing has roughly the same specs as my laptop from 2 years ago(In fact, I think it might even be running the same processor) which runs RA2 flawlessly.

I believe there's actually a successor to the Pandora coming out relatively soon, however, it's using ridiculously outdated hardware (Pretty sure it's using the same chipset as the Raspberry Pi 2 only running at 1.5 gHz)

well.. i tried the altenative way.. bassicly.. thae first way is to stream games.. but you need a pc turned on for this..
if i could manage to rum WXP on my phone (Galaxy J1 2016, not that powerful) and run ra2 from that, that would be awesome (i remeber running w98 on my tablet via dosbox... maybe running it with w98?)

+1 this isn't really worth it. you want portable ra2? sorry, laptop or nothing. RA2 was never built for pure controller support, only for occasional joystick/controller use in bot wiring. that's it. not worth it imo.

Yes, if you wish to for some reason. I'm simply stating the fact that's RA2 will be terrible  for controllers. And it seems like it would be hard to get the game on or off the system, and it's ultimately not worth it in my opinion.

I can imagine the Steam controller being useable, since it's not too dissimilar to a trackpad and RA2 is playable on a trackpad.

Portable RA2 would be great but its a 13 year old game or older and Laptops are pretty much the only way you can take RA2 on the go as they can run it, Tablets might but they have low memory space and might no be able to handle it. BUT there is a Gaming Tablets so who knows

I doubt tablets will work unless they have a inbuilt keyboard, and even then if your going to play ra2 on a tablet with a keyboard. And at that point, just use a laptop I'd say.

I suppose. But what about the keyboard? If you have a keyboard you may as well just use a trackpad and at that point you're over complicating playing ra2.
