As commonplace as this style is, it is kind of in the dark as to who exactly came up with it. I do realize that I may have played a role with my realistic designs before the style became commonplace but there is no way I was close to the first. Who do you think made the first IRL bot, how far back does this style of building go in DSL?

can we ban whoever did? thanks. dark web assassination is another option, I'm sure we can crowdfund the fee.

I'd prefer to ban the creator of DSL-S, then people wouldn't complain about the lack of hosts and IRL, when they could be hosting themself

Complaining is easy. Hosting is also easy but also slightly more effort.

i'll have you know

it's been around since the dawn of ra2, just didn't get popular until like 2015 or so
the main reason was the release of ra2cf cause it made it stupid easy

then we wouldnt have any good bots chief

ribbs was the guy who held the first irl tournament but i dont remember if stagfish's ai pack happened before or after that
i know thyrus was building irl since the beginning
im sure you can trace the lineage back to before that but those three kind of got the ball rolling imo

2009.
Though it's still likely that there was IRL building before that. And it's also reasonable to assume that many builders built in an IRL-esque style before being influenced by other users. If that's true, then there isn't really an inventor of IRL. It's just something that has gotten to be more developed and recognizable over the years.

thats pretty much it ^

Then we can have a 10 years anniversary for it next year then?

i mean the 'tenth' would have been in 2013 since its been around since the beginning, it just wasnt popular until recently

IRL has been the dominant meta since around 2012/13. The only thing that's changed is that the other metas are now almost completely dead
-
Surely the answer to this is the guys who developed the game and made the stock AI.
-
When I came here no one really built IRL bots. Stock was going stronger and so did DSL-S. I played RA2 for several years before I joined and I was always building what is known as IRL today (or poor DSL-S)
I wouldn't say I invented IRL but I guess I had some influence in it becoming popular back in the day. I was criticised for my bots not being combat efficient until IRL became a thing
-
IIRC, Ribbs's tournament was pretty much the start of IRL as something mainstream. but yes it existed since the beginning

Who invented DSl-S then

Who invented DSl-S then
jesus christ himself

Doubt it
Jesus wouldn't make such a bad meta

you not being able to build well for it hardly makes it bad
DSL-s has been around since the beginning of DSL. hard to say specifically 'who' made it
-
I haven't even posted any dsl-s bots or IF bots so how can you know I'm bad at it .
Also I think DSL-S started as IRL but people kept building better bots until they were barely realistic. Then IRL became popular as a counter to what DSL had become

Oldest IRL builder I can remember is Pressure. Every BBEANS tournament he was in (starting with the first one in, what, 2004?), he'd come out with a really nice-looking but ultimately non-competitive machine. If anybody "invented" it, I'd say it was him.
