Idea for next DSL update
« on: October 29, 2010, 03:49:57 PM »
Is it possible to change the game so that the chassis can be edited even while components are in it?

It seems to me you are as much designing the bot as building it, so I think its reasonable that you should be able to adjust the chassis whenever you want.

It must be possible to alter the code so that the components stay in place when you want to edit the chassis.

I doubt Adrian Newey starts from scratch every time he wants to make an adjustment.

I don't believe it is possible. Not without some serious .exe work. And so far nobody's been able to edit the .exe. Not even the might of Serge has penetrated it.

It's a pain, I know, but it's something every RA2 builder has to live with.

You get a point for mentioning adrian newey and in turn f1.
You the lose that point for not seeing that there's a thread for all discusion of dsl 3.
Then again I give you that point back, because this can have a thread of its own actually.

I don't think you could, I may not knoww that much about the inner workings of RA2, but I know that it'd take quite a bit of programing to do that.
Also, I think a lot of builders pride themselves on having tight chasis's and therefore won't want any newbie to be able to build as tight chasis's as them.

Plus people like shouting EMPTY SPACE here for some reason.

The thing is, Scorps, there's no real way to get a chassis properly airtight unless you resize it in the bot lab. One thing you can do, is lay out all your components before you start properly building, then take a few tries to resize the chassis accordingly. It's frustrating, but does make your bots better, on the whole.

What I usually do is build the largest possible (sticking to grid) version of the shape of chasis I want to build, make the bot, check that the idea could work, then resize down to what I think will fit.
There's nothing worse than having to rebuid the chasis WHILE trying to make a prototype of a bot.

I hadn't thought of that - all you basically need to know is the volume of all the components you will use then you can make an educated stab at it.

Another idea would be to make a stand-alone bot lab application that allows you to edit the chassis size, and simply import the bot into the game.

It can be done out of the bot lab by editing the bot file, but most of the people here howl "CHEEEAAAATING" when it is done

yup just like AAM, i use it on occasion just to get past the unreal CMs. but i keep it realistic. all i want in the whole wide world(at the moment) is the bot hight bar to stay where you set it when you go to tweak it. to bad it cant be done.lol thats way off topic............more options for extenders and skirts in the length area. i bet thats in the DSL 3 thread already lol
Holy crap they do exist!!!! :Rob2
