Title: I am the only one that absolutly can't make any decent wedge ?
Post by: Mystic2000 on July 17, 2013, 02:21:38 PM
Seriously neither of my bots can't outwedge ANYTHING in NAR AI and since DSL-S is a giant wedge war for the most part...

i've tried everything, snapper wedges, skirt hignes, mako wedges, metal hinges it ALWAYS sucks

i can almost hear the game doing the trolol guy sonbg and says to me: "you won't make any good wedges and so all your bots will suck trololol"

seriously it really start to pissing me off

so i wanted to know if i was the only one that can't make any wedge good ?

sorry about the raging but at one point you just have enough that all your bots are ruined by THE WEDGE

There's no such thing as a good wedge.  Only average wedge.

I don't see where the difficulty is.  Put a 80 cm angled skirt on a metal hinge on 2 sides, hit F12 and make sure it doesn't agod.  Don't expect your wedge to win more than half the time since everyone else has the same freaken wedge.

in general when i use 2 metal hnsges they won't be at the same angle and wiring then and rotate didn't help

Yo.
Great advice.

Through tests by 123, the skirt hinge is usually the best wedge if you only use the center AP. Metal hinge wedges can cause problems with AGOD, but it can be minimized by attaching the hinges before any other motor.

Yo.
Great advice.
It's not advice, it's me agreeing that I suck at wedges.

Most of my good wedges are complete luck :dumb)

Use the pause button on your keyboard when attaching the wedge components, should keep the problem away for the most part

I read somewhere that on recent keyboards (like mine) pause button just pause the audio and nothing else

Yeah, I have that same problem.

If you have an old USB keyboard lying around, use one of those.

I found out by accident (while trying to hit PrintScreen) that PauseBreak inverts the esc control, so when you pause the game the pause menu appears but the fight still continues. When you unpause it, the menu disappears but the game pauses itself.

I was quite bad with wedges too for the longest amount of time. A good way to make a decent wedge is by making a 2-wheeled bot.
wheels in the back and a wedge up front that just slides on the ground.

At that point it is all on your driving skills and weapon effectiveness because you will either get under them or clash because they are just as low as you.(http://www.totalinsanity.net/tut/mechanical/botypes/wedge.jpg)
Now it by no means a sure win as I have implied. Both RA2 and reality can back that up. It is a good starting point though.

Actually Mystic was talking about wedges in RA2 specifically, where this doesn't quite apply.
In RA2 there are a few ways to make a good wedge, such as using skirt hinges, metal hinges and burst motors, all with wedge components mounted on them. A chassis wedge, as you suggested, will almost always be outwedged by one of these designs in RA2.
Welcome to the forums, by the way.

As everyone copies the same few working setups, every wedge becomes average.  "Good" wedge, as define by actually being better than average, no longer exists.

So while the game runs on a different mechanics than real life and requires a slightly different setup, both faces the same problem.

No one has thought to use your Neo-Mako wedges, though.

And by that I mean the wedges in the wedge test that you did that were at edgy angles

Not really Neo-Mako wedges. Flail wedges are actually decent on slow bots though so for some VS they're a valid and quite light option.

I agree that the whole angled skirt hinges thing is cool but it's surprisingly hard to use those as effective wedges

I called them Neo-Mako wedges because they were steep, like the wedge on Mako.

I referenced them because, of the test of wedges, those steep, oddly angled wedges were the most effective at getting underneath things.

I'm aware, but it's actually a rather vulnerable setup. Actual mako wedges are decent on slower bots too. It's not just a matter of skirt hinges vs metal hinges really, both Mako wedges and snapper wedges are decent options if you've got the right setup (IE a slower VS for the former and a bot needing a shrimech for the latter).

Axle wedge are terrible regardless of setups.  Even at it's best it still stinks.

It's just not the logical conclusion most people would jump to given there are many bots that are a better example, like basically the ones in that thread.

He doesn't know the significance between free axle and skirt hinge, so he just judge based on looks.
