How do people feel about using each others chassis?
« on: April 24, 2013, 11:49:45 PM »
So as some of you know I have uploaded my AW chassis for all to use freely to build there own AW's etc. but how do people feel about stripping other peoples bots and using the chassis to build another bot? Should this be allowed? would it be frowned upon?

Having pre-made air-tight chassis for each weight class would make bot building a lot stressful for some and might even increase the number of entries in tournaments and number of new bots shown in showcases. I have noticed some using H.A.N.N.A.H's chassis and don't mind at all, how would you feel if someone used the chassis of one of your bots?

Perhaps a chassis part in the bot exchange could be a good thing?

I'm afraid it will degrade building quality amongst the newbies. although considering nearly every single newbie doesn't build DSLS...

This.
DSL was at least engineered to have AWs, BWs, and SHWs be more of a thing, compared to Stock which only has the standard 3 weight classes.
so I can see why AW chassis are a good thing, as getting bots that size isn't exactly a walk in the park(unless your used to it, though)

I actually have various "battery box" chassis for Stock and DSL2.  But I find that in heavier weight class, most bots require specialized chassis anyway.

Besides anyone can download an AI pack and steal a chassis if they really needed to, so I don't really see any harm in having them in BotExchange.

I have noticed this and been guilty of doing it myself with an AW chassis which is why I created this topic, to see how people feel about it.

IMO :
[I will use the "no personal attack/s to anyone here" script from now on, just in case if someone decide something else...]
Making a good airtight chassis and some insane stacking in it takes time.
The time is the most precious resource in a human life.
If someone wants a good chassis, he must build it, no free lunch here.
I'm with Nar on that, because the newbies will not learn to build, if you give them a half-ready bot.
Plus, it's a known fact, that I don't like the copying, I even don't showcase any bots, that looks like a clone.

using a chassis that you have already made is OK. i have done so on multiple occasions (anty c's chassis, purplesands 3's chassis, mini dolsa II's chassis... etc and so on you get the idea  :dumb)) and it certainly speeds up bot production since editing the chassis takes up the most time.

using someone elses chassis (even an aw template) is stealing someone else's work though.
How you make Alarm Clock Pizza is:
Step 1: You buy an alarm clock from the store, and then you have to break it and put it in the sauce.
Step 2: Fold the sauce in 5 slices and put it in the dough.
Step 3: Paint the eggs with a pitcher of a clock showing what time you want to wake up and eat pizza for breakfast.
Step 4: Put the eggs in the dough.
Step 5: Make it flat into a round shape and draw the time you want on it.
Step 6: Put some old steel to prevent other peple from stealing it.
Step 7: Make it flat and cut into 60 slices 1 for each minute in 1 our.
Step 8: Put in the oven set the timer to 30048813.2884 seconds and put the temperature on 'Volcano' setting.
Step 9: If you think it is take to long, then get yor alarm clock and set it to now so that it will ring and you can take it out.
Step 10: Take it out uv the uvin wen it is redy and go to bed. In the morning eat pizza and also eat yor hands bi mistake.

Unless they hand it out like I did  :dumb)  honestly I'm quite stocked someone else would want to use my chassis and I don't mind it as long as they come up with unique designs. It seems like this all comes down to one question, what do you prefer?

1. Quality and Quantity.
2. Hard work.

This is a game so I prefer option 1 plus I was and still am planning to build more chassis templates for other weight classes. These chassis templates won't help people build uber-bots (unless it's like a 36HS template), like Trov said most HW's need their own custom chassis for maximum effectiveness so does chassis sharing really hurt that much?

Not really sure why anyone should be upset at using someone else's chassis. If the skin, or the entire robot looks like the original, then yes, someone may feel upset. Even then, the robot itself could be homage.

Edit: And if it IS a homage, then it should be stated, then nobody can be upset. Hap' days.

Interesting question I would say.

I'd partly agree with Venko here that it takes alot of time to stack and make an airtight chassis but for people who actually has a busy life I can see why they would use someone elses chassis as it would take ages to perfect making it in how little time they have.

But making a good chassis is part of learning how to play RA2 no matter if you DSL or Stock.

I'd only use someone elses chassis if I'm rush making a bot at the last minute or using Ian's AW chassis.

For me, this is a design oriented game, so I will use every tool at my disposal to make the building process easier.

Probably why I am mostly a DSL builder where the actual building process is quite easy.  I don't have hours and hours of free time to put together a design I have in my head.

I'm not a big fan of it just because the chassis is the starting point of every bot. It is my opinion that it is best to start with nothing than try to make something unique out of a chassis that has already been over used.

There used to be a contest which required participants to build a bot using a provided chassis but many of the entries looked similar because the chassis was better suited for certain arrangements. This made it more difficult to be original especially in the lower weight classes.

I could add a section to the bot exchange for it but it would make cheating easier (for example, a DSL chassis in stock) and harder to spot (for example, hosts wouldn't be able to use the chassis as a fingerprint for identifying cheaters).

It doesn't take as much skill as making there own chassis, its okay but what i would do i make my own chassis and reuse it for a couple of bots.

Pretty sure you won't be able to fit any stock parts into your typical DSL Chassis.  I mean, what kind of epic fail DSL chassis can fit those ginormous black batteries and blue bursts?

Besides, if you really want to cheat like that, you can just port your stock bot into DSL and change the chassis armor.
