cutsom robot parts
« on: December 07, 2012, 02:17:23 PM »
hi there

I've just been designing my new heavyweight (real robot), I've made it in Solidworks and I've thought that there must be a way to make it into a functioning RA2 robot from the 3d file, is there? anybody want to have a go at telling me what to do or have a go at making it into an RA2 bot?

Hi there!

Yeah, there's no way you'll be able to go straight from Solidworks file to Ra2 driveable. You could probably make the 3d file a component in Ra2 and then attach it to a base you made in game, but that would probably involve witchcraft.

Best bet is to try and recreate it in Ra2 using the chassis tools and in game items. Any images?

yeah, I'm not stupid I'm aware I can't just drop my assembly files into RA2 and use it, It's a brand new robot set for the UK Champs in March and RoboGames in April, so I'm keep it under wraps for now, so no, no images.

I'm looking to find out how to make the 3D files into components that I can use in the game, if someone can point me at a how to guide or would like to do it themselves please leave a message.

https://gametechmods.com/RA2wiki/index.php?title=Creating_Components

This seems to be the most complete guide on the topic. Only problem is all of the download links are broken, including the exporter which seems essential for it. And I can't seem to find a download for it. If you go to the homepage of the site and click tools you get the reference bot and some "Max plugin" but i'm not sure how much help they'd be.

Please note that you must use 3DSMax 5 to create custom components. It is the only modeling program RA2 will work with... And yes, it does have to be that version.

Get   3Dmax .... 5 is easiest, but does not work with Vista, 7 or 8 and the   go to the front page and read all the tutorials on the subject,   especially the Lu-Tze wheel tut https://gametechmods.com/forums/index.php/page,page3111.html

I have not made parts in a long time, but will help you if I can ..... oldtimers has kicked in and I forget a lot these days.
