Title: Difference between stock and DSL
Post by: isaacmanjr on February 12, 2014, 11:35:09 AM
Just out of curiosity, what is the difference between DSL and Stock version of the game?

You posted it in the wrong topic... anyways fixed.

DSL has far more components and more variety, and bots featuring these new components. Also it's a bit more balanced than stock.

DSL is also aiming for a realistic style... Stock bots may look like a mess and we use plenty of glitches, motors on bursts, motors overlapping batteries.

DSL bots don't do all of that intense glitching, sure you can glitch but only if the result looks OK.

Also stock is dominated by a few bot types and the other bot types are useless. So is DSL, but at least in DSL more bot types can be made competitive.

Short answer: Everything

Exploration is always the best way to check out different things, dont forget you can copy your RA2 game folder in case you want to undo anything you install ;)

Stock is just manlier than DSL. How can you claim to be a so-called "manly-man" when you're obviously an effeminate DSL builder?

As of right now, I would say DSL 2.1 tournaments will remain the norm. DSL 3 is still in the beta stage.

I've played RA2 quite a bit but I'm still not sure what the differences are between the clean Stock version and the DSL version (Currently playing DSl 2.1)

Could anyone tell me? Thanks.

Stock is the unmodified version of the game. All the original components that came with the game when it was released.

DSL is mostly all new components that were made by the community.

See I'm a little confused on which version to play, as of now there is Stock, DSL(2.1) and DSL 3(Beta) I don't really know what version most people prefer on here. I just want to play it for fun and use RW replica's, but I would like to have a go at the online tournaments sometime in the future. Currently I'm using DSL(2.1). Also, I'm assuming you're not allowed to install/use stock components on the DSL version and vice versa?

Thanks for the help!

Using Stock components that are hidden by default in DSL is considered illegal in tournaments and you wouldn't want to use them anyway - their hitpoints are pitiful in comparison to DSL components. All 3 versions are used here - I mean, I have at least 10 different copies of RA2 with different mods, they all have their upsides.

I will find you Nary

It's all about what fits your building style IMO, people like me love stock because I want to build something that has no limits. Others love having more components to build good looking IRL bots, and others build DSL-S because it adds more variety from stock building...

Same. To me, stock is fun because you can send components into space and build weird stuff that you couldn't make in reality. But in both DSL standard and DSL IRL, there is a realistic rule.

in stock, it's commonplace to use Red Extenders over the Black ones, they add flair to the robot.

huehuehue

It's best to try them all- there's also stuff out there like Space Arena. Would be pretty cool to have a space arena tourney, actually.

Nah, DSL is awesome. The amount of work put in is insane. But it's more about combat effectiveness. RA2 is more of an art form for me now, and I can show off my skills better in Stock.
