So I wanted to make custom components again, mostly to see if I still could. Over the years I've attempted to create several mods with varying levels of progress and success before something happened; either getting bored or losing the progress made. If I do go at it again, it'll be a significant upgrade of stock RA2, giving multiple options for pretty much everything possible. You wouldn't just have the rubber wheel, you could have a thin rubber wheel, a wide rubber wheel, something inbetween, it could have foam tread instead of rubber, or it could be solid metal for toughness over traction - in a nutshell, taking the same old components and overloading the player with choice.
Here I'm doing something similar - In DSL there's a weight gap between the Ant sawblade and the regular sawblades.
The bot really doesn't matter, it's just to show it off.

Comes in 60cm and 80cm, 1.64 piercing, 5 frequency. Both sawblades have a efficiency of around 60135: The same as the regular sawblades (in DSL)
I'd call it a working beta. Why? There's two problems.

1. I need to clean up the transparency for the sawblade. The teeth are all over the place and it sucks for removing the background from the picture, much like it does for Polycarbonate extenders/sheets.
2. See the ring going through the teeth? Well, the regular sawblades use a transparent TGA for the faces of the disc, but the teeth on it are fake. The GMF of the sawblade is a disc, lined up so that a texture used for the rim of the disc lines up with the edge of the sawblade TGA. The gaps inbetween the teeth on my sawblade do not, leaving a gap in the sawblade that shouldn't be. I hope I explained that right, but long story short I need to change the mesh.

Awesome.

Nice one

This would be great for DSL 3.

dat blade

sawblade looks sick but teflon is an anti stick coating used on cookware.
tungsten carbide is the material used to coat sawblades and drill bits.

Ah, yes, now that you mention it. I based the description off this however:
Teflon Coating. Resistant to friction and heat build-up. Teflon coated blades last longer, cleaning is easy and the distinctive coating also gives rust resistance.
And at the same time it is described as a TCT sawblade on the Freud official website. http://www.freudtooling.co.uk/catalog1/ (http://www.freudtooling.co.uk/catalog1/)

New stuff ahoy. Decided to try my hand delving deeper into the GMF.

There's the Nifty 6V reskin on the left, which is now 12V. I do have a 6V version of the texture if someone wants to use it instead of the stock Nifty skin, it is attached below. To install, overwrite battery2.bmp in the Components/battery2/maps folder.
Then there's the 'new' Nifty 6V on the right. It's 2/3s of the height of the real Nifty, making it a bit more manageable.
Lastly, I added a third attachment point to the small battery pack, allowing it to be placed on it's other side. There's an interesting issue that needs to be solved however: I raised each battery as high as the chassis allows. For some reason the game acts as if the battery was as tall as it is with the default attachment point when checking to see if the battery intersects with the top of the chassis. But the collisions are fine everywhere else. They can be stacked on top of each other like a tower happily, and I can't intersect a component with them at all. (I'm not counting stacking in the sense of the stock metagame)

Even deeper now, deeper then before. Ooooooh.

I've now repositioned the axle of the Reversible Angle Motor and added another attachment point on top of the motor. so the Reverse style of the motor is no longer needed. The bot shown demonstrates this, along with the custom battery packs (I still need someone to help me with how they collide with the top of the chassis). I haven't changed the texture of the RAD yet.

AW HELL YEAH

Quick update, a 5th baseplate attachment point: on the side. Essentially it's now as versatile as a DSL Magmotor.

This is awesome stuff. Will this get a public release when it's done?
-
Thanks guys. I have plans to release it when it's ready, yup.
-
Cool idea. It kind of reminds me of the unofficial stock 1.31 patch (before the current 1.4 patch). It gave AP points to the control board and snapper.
Something like this is not truly stock IMO but it would be cool if we made this into a total overhaul mod (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mod_(video_gaming)#Total_overhaul) of stock. If you don't mind working with others, I would be more than happy to work with you on something like this. In fact, I've been in the process of doing something like this for quite some time now (note the height guide, random arena selector, action cam, and my practice arena). PM me if you are interested in starting something like this with me.
BTW, I think if you rotated the pink's mesh so that the shortest side is the height, it would fix the chassis ceiling issue.
-
That's good because I'm doing a total overhaul of stock right this second x) I've been rebalancing weapons to an efficiency of ~25000 and stuff for the last 3 days for a sudden reveal when I was ready. I'll gladly let the cat out of the bag to work on a more organized project.
-
I look forward to seeing how this project develops. Do you plan do rebuild the AI? If so, to current standards or just as they were, but utilizing the new points, and possibly adding 3 extra's on each team.
-
I believe a rebuild of the AI would be out of necessity if we'll be making components redundant like the reversed RAD, if not because they are sh**. As for the standard of building, that's not for me to decide.
-
awesome stuff, you skills could be useful for DSL when click ever comes back.
-
I'm pesimistic about how much I can help the DSL project. This is all low-level stuff in a way. A few values changed here, a few values changed there, on GMFs that are fairly small. The complexity of some of the parts in DSL is perhaps unfeasible to work on, let alone achieve in Wordpad.
