Title: Somebody's iRacing Paint Showcase
Post by: Somebody on November 28, 2010, 05:07:16 PM: I recently started painting cars in iRacing. I asked someone to paint a car for me, looked pretty simple, fired up GIMP, finally figured out how to use it, and started. So far I've made $20 (people are willing to pay for the paints!). This also means that you might see me competing in future BOTMs ;)

In testing sessions, you automatically have the number 64 put onto your car. In practice, first people in get the first numbers. 1st in the session gets 1, second gets 2, etc. Qualifying, Racing, and Time Trials have numbers decided by ranking in terms of iRating, which is your points. determined by how you finish in races. When driving in spectator sessions (you can drive along with cars but they cannot see you, and cannot collide with your car) you do not have a number.

I was in testing running laps around Bristol Motor Speedway, which I had just bought with the money from the T&W Cars.

Wire layer shows you what shows up where
Turn off layers for things like Wire, number/sponsor blocks, and iRacing logo when saving file for use. File must be saved as a .tga, in the size that it is when you open it. No resizing. If you have any questions, feel free to ask.

Oh, also, there are two sets of things in there. One of the cup and one for the roadster. They are different logos, etc. for each car. Don't leave both on when saving, pick one and stick with it. They are placed automatically in the sim on startup, those are just there so you know where they are.

Post by: Somebody on December 27, 2010, 06:33:16 PM: It can be real money like through Paypal, but I have preferred to be payed in iRacing Gift Cards (real money as well), which give you iRacing Credits which you buy iRacing things with. I can extend my membership or buy tracks/cars so I can complete a series schedule or have the car to paint. One more paint and I complete the schedule for the series I am running (Late Models), and then I will probably start asking for Paypal so I get some actual cash out of it. The gift cards can be anywhere from 10-1000 dollars, so it leaves the payer the choice of what they want to pay.

Like combat robotics, buying consoles, RC Cars, or real racing. And with basic paint skills you can pay for your iRacing easily. I've bought a lot of things from paint money and am planning to keep painting.

I use my mom's credit card and whenever I am going to extend my subscription or something, I give her money to put in and after she puts it in the account, I but things. Paypal works too and I'm pretty sure anyone can get a paypal (may be wrong here).

Sierra has always made the best racing simulators. I have the original NASCAR Racing game from 1994 (maybe '95, not sure). It was pretty far ahead of everyone else at the time.

It's too bad Electronic Arts bought got the exclusive rights to making the official NASCAR simulation in early 2003, forcing Sierra to halt production of NASCAR Racing 2003 Season and making it the most sought-after racing simulator ever released.

In my opinion, The EA NASCAR games blow. I still refuse to play them...

Post by: Somebody on January 23, 2011, 08:24:42 AM: Yeah I got a couple of the EA Nascar games. They sucked, and thats why I have iRacing now. And it was actually the Papyrus group which was owned by Sierra. Papyrus was dissolved and some of the core people hooked up and started to work on iRacing.

Ah, I see. I suppose they don't possess the rights to use trademarks. I'm guessing the same goes for the "Aeru" racing wheels. lol

And on the main page is a NASCAR Promotion under "latest headlines" on the box that gets you a reduced rate and gives you Talladega, Daytona, and the COT for a really reduced price. With those you can run the Carburetor Cup which is a COT Rookie League.
Next to that is a Grand Prix promo for the same price with the F1 car, Zandvoort, and Silverstone. Thats all the stuff for Formula Fun, the F1 Rookie series.

My computer had an onboard ATI Radion chipset (which should work ok with iracing). I upgaded ~~the video card~~ to a higher end video card because I really want it to be smooth and with nice detail.

The more important upgrade was my RAM. I only had 2 gigs while running WIN7 32bit. That was going to be super slow running the game. 6 Gigs shall run it to my liking.

Post by: Somebody on February 02, 2011, 09:24:45 PM: I am going to say it now. The COT is a handful. It is amazingly loose, and I have not had the time to practice with it to get used to it. It surely is not the point and go of the EA NASCAR games. Personally though, if they had the NASCAR Package when I had signed up, I would have gone for it. You get a lot of appreciation for what the real Sprint Cup drivers go through to drive the cars, and its pretty cool to feel like a real Nascar driver.

tl;dr: If you know that you are going to love iRacing and play it for a long time, get the package because someday you will buy them anyways. If you are unsure about how much you will like iRacing, go with the buy 1 month, get 2 free months code.

It is a very realistic racing simulator. I signed up this past week and I gotta say it is pretty intense. I've been waiting for a decent sim like this to come around.

Haven't been able to catch you on iRacing. :P I guess our racing "free-time" is pretty opposite.

I am still bumping around in Legends. Trying to get decent lap times in SoBo Speedway. I can't believe how realistic and hard it is. It could be that I just suck at it... but I refuse to give in too soon!

Post by: Somebody on March 13, 2011, 10:12:44 PM: It has been said that the aim of the Rookie series is to get out of the rookie series. Learning the Legends helps a lot for later driving, but it feels kind of sucky when you are taken out in half the races by people who didn't try to practice before racing. All you really need is to just not spin out. There are guys who spend all there time in the Legends because they like them, and you'll never match them. Just drive safely and at a speed you can do consistently and confidently. And practice avoiding wrecks in practice (Instead of flooring it into the nearest car which I may or may not have done... a lot...).
