Title: Knex Creations
Post by: cephalopod on September 13, 2011, 01:51:05 PM
Yes, it's in CAD Showcase because there's nowhere suitable but it's designed (CAD), and S_R's card models fit well in Artwork Thread so I thought I'd put it here.

Basically, I cleaned up earlier and got a total Nostalgia moment when I found my Knex, and proceeded to recreate monSTAR, as best I could, using Knex.

Anyone else get a little nostalgic? XD

I think I am gonna get Knex for about a Tenner the next time I get money. :trollface

Still looks awesome.

Is it possible to make flippers?
Title: Re: Knex Creations
Post by: cephalopod on September 13, 2011, 01:55:34 PM
Very possible. I haven't played with it in years so the designs I used to make were very basic but it's very easy to make almost any realistic design.

I think Knex is better because it looks like it would suit robot combat better.

I had actually built some pretty badass looking K'Nex mechas that consisted of the basic figure's body, then it had custom arms/legs that made them look like they were from Mobile Suit Gundam.

...But that was years ago, of course.
(I still have my K'Nex, they are just in my attic... or something)

Another difference between US and UK English I see- the plurality of Lego. Here it's Lego, there it's Legos- maybe that's where the S on the end of "Maths" went?

An intriguing observation. But Lego itself doesn't necessarily work as a plural, us Brits wouldn't say "I have many Lego", would we?

Getting back on topic,  I should probably post the picture I took of a wierd geometric shape I made out of k'Nex this afternoon.

Walkerbot 2.0 and Walkerbot 3.0

Walkerbot 2.0
First ever walker I made. Took less than 30 mins and it uses the motor as a leg. Also - if it gets flipped over it can srimech from any position possible!
(https://gametechmods.com/uploads/images/93360walkerbot 1 001.JPG)
(https://gametechmods.com/uploads/images/23911walkerbot 1 003.JPG)

Walkerbot 3.0
Took a day to build the legs and chassis and another day to build the motor/gear system. Keeps getting stuck which is annoying.

Question: Is this thread for replicas of RA2 bots, or just K'nex bots?
Title: Re: Knex Creations
Post by: cephalopod on October 01, 2011, 05:52:29 AM
I created it with the intention of any 'combat' robots being shown, be it RA2 reps or not.

Finally a K'nex thread! All the bots you see are from 2003, I built them when I was like 7 or 8.

WELL GUYS I got bored last night. And then I got some inspiration. And then I got out all of my K'nex and built a working walker :D

I also have a video of it in action that's unfortunately sideways, and this stupid netbook doesn't have the capacity to run any sort of video editing software. Does anyone know if Youtube lets you re-orient your videos? If so, I'll upload it.

EDIT: Never mind about the video, I'll have it up shortly.

Lol alright. I still don't have those triangle thingies, though. And I can't seem to fix my motor's commutator (I derped once and used an AC commutator but I was 7, and I tried to fix it again at 9) and the inputs seem to be glued shut by a battery leak. D:

Title: Re: Knex Creations
Post by: R0B0SH4RK on October 16, 2011, 12:32:03 PM
Well, since his Strandbeests were my inspiration for building it, I tried to emulate them as best I could. It's pretty close to it from the designs I've seen on Youtube, except I needed some supports.

Will be designing new legs for it today, hopefully so it can walk without any type of supports.

£12.99 for 510 pieces - you could get 2 for under £30 and have a crapload of Knex (':
On Toys R Us you're looking at £20 for 350 pieces (although you do get a nice storage box - http://www.toysrus.co.uk/Toys-R-Us/Toys/Construction/KNex-350-Piece-Tub(0084891) (http://www.toysrus.co.uk/Toys-R-Us/Toys/Construction/KNex-350-Piece-Tub(0084891))) so I think the eBay thing is worth it :L

It fires very well. Sometimes the trigger gets caught if it's not pulled back enough, but you just need to pull it a bit harder.

Also yes, that is my hair. :gawe: No-one else in my house has hair that long.

Dove into Knex for the first time this past weekend.  Got a kit as a gag-gift for Christmas a couple few months ago because my folks saw the word "battlebot" on the back of the package.  XD

Built it up in a couple hours.  Now I gotta tear it down and follow the trend of making something DSL-ish with the parts.

I used to build robots with Knex like you, then I took an arrow in the knee.
Anyway, I had this set where you could control the robot through infra-red. The motor was so slow so I had to gear it to make it go decently fast. I might post some pictures of some of my other stuff soon, assuming anyone visits this thread anymore

I made some small replicas.
Currently I have made: Chaos 2, Atomic, Hypno Disc, Terrorhurtz, Panic attack, Cassius III (never competed in robot wars due to Rex's protest.), Stealth, Cedric Slammer, Behemoth, 13 black (needs rebuild, ineffective discs) and Oblivion 2.
No pictures yet.

The arm is so long that the pieces may bend before it can lift even a very light mass

Hang on I see how this works now, pretty cool.
I would just say tidy up the work on the end of the wheel axle
