Title: Badnik's sprite work.
Post by: Badnik96 on July 24, 2012, 04:57:33 PM
So I decided to start a thread for my spriting. It's not amazing so far as I just started yesterday, but I think my first project is coming out pretty well. I've decided to make top-down sprites for each machine in F-Zero GX.

So here's my first sprite (not shaded at all sorry), the Dark Schneider.

1. What are you using to make these?
2. I can haz help? :3 My experience with Pokemon spriting should lend me a hand here

1)MS Paint. It takes a while but it works.
2)Ehhh I kinda want to do this myself, but if I need help on something then sure.

Is it just me or does that seem a little long? Idk it just looks disproportionate compared to the actual thing which seems much shorter

Post by: Badnik96 on July 25, 2012, 04:49:52 PM
Nope, it's the same length, it's just the perspective. Gazelle is meant to be a stick XD

Also if you notice, all machines use the same size image so I can make them on the same scale. One or two later on will need some widening to fit (Like Magic Seagull) but most will use that same size.

Maybe, if you found the right software, you might be able to make a fangame out of these.

That actually was the plan eventually. 027 went to a computer camp about 2 weeks ago and got some good game programming software. Once I get all the sprites done I'll install the program onto my laptop and see what I can do.

No, it works for all sorts of games.
Title: Re: Badnik's sprite work.
Post by: Badnik96 on July 26, 2012, 03:52:25 PM
In that case, could you send it to me when you get it? I've been looking for the right software so I can start my MM fangame...

First I have to finish the other 37 machines, then I have to wait for 027 to finish the game he's working on (all he's told anyone is that it's a platformer, and he hasn't worked on it in weeks DX)

It's already like a quarter of the way through, so you can't join it now sorry. Basically you tell me driver stats and car sponsors and stuff and I paint a car and all the cars race for a season. I'll message you on gameFAQs when the next season rolls around.

And thanks :D

but what kind of game programming software is it? c++? python?

I dunno, it's something on a disc. I'll try to explain it when I get it installed.

Iron Tiger:

Oooh, I like this. But I have some criticism for it too.

Maybe you can make the beak/top/wings a little brighter gray? They seem too dark when I look at the picture and back. Also, I think you should draw in the little scoops on the side of Iron Tiger, they're on top of the blue sides.

Also, if you can do this, it'd make it just a teeny little bit more detailed if you added the paint chips, scrapes and whatnot on the sprites

Looking fantastic so far, I must say. Although if you're planning on making it into a game, depending on what kind of game it is, you'll need to make them in different positions and so forth. Maybe diagonal sprites as well, or crashed ones, things of that nature. But it will probably be great if you can pull it off.

Nice sprites Badnik. :D
But yeah, you should make a game with these. (I'd prefer Game Maker)

I tried doing the scoops but couldn't get it right. I'll try again tomorrow. Thanks for the criticism.

I can't wait until you do that one twin-cockpit one, I wonder how that'll look

The Twin Noritta? Heh, I've been wondering that myself.
Here's the Wild Goose. In hindsight I shoulda made it  a bit longer, I'll get to that. Next is the series' icon, the Blue Falcon...

It's a little longer than the first one, to make it look more like the real Wild Goose.

It's been a couple days, hasn't it? :P

Anyway, I have some sprites to show off. I re-did the palette on the Dark Schneider to make it look more like the real thing, and I widened the Red Gazelle's base a little to go along with the car.

Deep Claw, Octoman not included:

Note: This is the first machine I've had to stretch the template for. There will likely be more. Next up is the Great Star, a nice break from the Deep Claw's complexity.

All of them are looking brilliant so far. I'm wondering if Deep Claw would look better if the rear wing was thicker. It doesn't look like it goes back far enough to me.

Purples could be a little more distinct, in my view. I thought it was all the same colour to start with.

Thanks to Gaz, I have the Little Wyvern driving around on a blank background in Scratch. This is the foundation for my game because 027 is a lazy ass.

After a week's hiatus, here's the Super Piranha. I actually had this one half-finished before I left, but I wasn't satisfied with it. Here.

Feedback is appreciated.

Comeback Sprite!

Pretty complex for my first sprite in 2 years, but screw it it's a sprite and I did it. It might be a little too small compared to the others I did, and it's probably not as detailed. Once I get back into the groove entirely I'll probably rework it.
