Title: Botober 2019
Post by: F1Krazy on September 15, 2019, 09:31:47 AM
(First off: I'm not sure if this is the right section. If it isn't, feel free to move it.)

[ This attachment cannot be displayed inline in 'Print Page' view ]

Last year, I set myself a personal challenge that I dubbed "Botober": build a brand new DSL-IRL bot every day for the whole of October, using the official Inktober 2018 prompts as inspiration. I unfortunately burned out and stopped about midway through, but the idea proved popular and - to my surprise - a couple of other people actually joined in.

So this year, I've decided to open Botober up, and organise it into a proper event that anyone can enter. My intention is for this thread is to act as a central hub, where people can declare their intent to enter, provide feedback, and (once October starts) post their bots.

  • Botober is a personal challenge - it's not a challenge to see who can build the best bots.
We'll see about that heck

Well, it's up to you. You could make a robot with a pneumatic spike that resembles a slingshot, or a robot with an axe that resembles a catapult, or a Doctor Strange-themed ring spinner called "Sling Ring", or...

I meant to bump this earlier, but just a quick reminder that this starts TOMORROW! Day 1's theme is "Jewelry" - start planning out your ideas!

Someone has to kick this off, right?
DAY 1: Jewlery
Bot: Engagement
Class: CW
So this is Engagement, and I'm pleased with how it turned out. Sadly, the treads AGODed, so I had to put them on regular motors. I was originally going to make it single-toothed, but I'm lazy so I went with this.

day 1: jewelry

made on stock
its a lightweight rammer, the fist is supposed to be a ruby on the ring

Right, how's this for a ring spinner?

[ This attachment cannot be displayed inline in 'Print Page' view ]

I've wanted to build a HS with this kinda chassis shape for ages. The idea was to make it look like one of those rings you see in cartoons where the diamond is comically oversized. Unfortunately, the teeth very slightly clip through the Perm... ah well, such is life. Something to fix after the month is over.

Let's keep the bots coming!

tbh you deserve extra credit just for not making a spinner like the rest of us

Hopefully Day 2 ("Mindless") throws up some more varied designs.

DAY 2: Mindless
Bot: No Brainer
Class: CW
So I had this idea for a while, but I didn't know how to execute it. This was originally going to be an extender bot, but then I realized why I don't do those. So, I settled for this. Maybe one day I'll make a proper skin, but that day isn't today.

Not as proud of this as I was of Zircon, as it's kind of a rush job, but I got my Day 2 bot done regardless!

[ This attachment cannot be displayed inline in 'Print Page' view ]

It's a (very underweight) hammer that loses control when it swings and starts flailing about. Like it's attacking in a mindless rage, get it? It takes heavy inspiration from my old bot Valkyri3, but is an entirely new robot built from scratch.

Tomorrow's gonna be fun...

Just a heads-up that due to a combination of factors, I'll be skipping today and also Saturday and Sunday. I can do tomorrow (Freeze) though, as I have an old friend in need of a rebuild that fits the theme quite nicely.

Day 3: Bear Trap
Saw the prompt and immediately thought back to an idea I'd had to make a bear trap robot. I'll probably redo in DSL but it at least looks passable

I put way too much effort into this, but here you go, my Day 4 entry!

[ This attachment cannot be displayed inline in 'Print Page' view ]

Having finally rebuilt Absolute Zero not too long ago, its kid brother now gets the same treatment. I feel a bit bad about swapping the custom-skinned Mini Minion Disc for a meta device two small Typhoons, but early testing suggests this thing is pretty strong now (and pretty fast!)

Ludum Dare 45 kicks off in ten minutes so I'll see you guys on Monday, keep building in my stead! DON'T LET THE FLAME DIE OUT

I don't have Day 5's build yet, but I have a couple days caught up

Day 2: Spin Cycle
The most mindless bot type in the game made on about an hour's sleep. Might've put too much effort into this tbh
Even better, it can't drive straight and the weapon scrapes the ground

Day 4: Cold Snap
Had an idea to do this kind of shape in RA2, came out as a pretty bad MW, but at least it looks alright

Long ago, before you and I were even specks among this plane, a great terror ruled over the land. It had powers beyond the comprehension of any mere mortal, and it held an iron grip of every dimension, ours included. Then, one day, it vanished. Leaving only marks of its former power in the landscape. We have lived in peace for the greater half of 10,000 years. I fear, however, that it has returned. The signs of corruption are beginning to show. We call upon our gods to stop this terror, but I have only heard one answer. You... cannot... stop... the Scourge

Day 7: Scourge
I've been listening to Starset's new album recently, and the symbols on their vids reminded me of ancient runes of some sort, so I saved an idea for today based around using similar symbols. This was the result, and I'm really happy with how it came out

Boy how to revive a dead thread.

Anyways, Day 18. Which is coincidentally, my birthday. So I've decided to post a bot here that I've been trying to sharpen for so long. Today's theme was misfit. So I decided to do a unconventional approach. Introducing my CW, Contrast.
Title: Re: Botober 2019
Post by: F1Krazy on October 31, 2019, 03:44:49 PM
Well, uhh... this didn't exactly go very well, did it?  :dumb)

I blame myself for that. I knew Ludum Dare was the first weekend of October, and that it would occupy a lot of my time, but I didn't realise how much of my mental energy it would also take out of me. I was totally burnt out by the end of the Ludum Dare weekend, and then not long after that, I began suffering from my annual debilitating cough. By the time I started regaining my creativity, I needed it for tournament builds (Tearaway, Fire Ant, Scylla & Charybdis...) And without the guy in charge putting in any effort, I'm not surprised that everyone else abandoned Botober too.

Thanks to everyone who did take part, though, especially those who stuck it out for longer than I did. Next year I may look at rescheduling this for a different month, so Ludum Dare doesn't burn me out again and I can properly commit to hosting and competing. Third time's the charm, eh?
