BOTM ideas:

-BOTM with a rule that all motors (weapon and drive) have to be contained in the chassis... all other components can be outside the chassis if desired.

-BOTM with absurd themes (Like... all bots have to be associated with sadistic pokemon... or bot must be shaped to resemble a snow leopard... y'know, silly stuff like that.)

-BOTM utilizing specific wepons that we don't see much of (because the weapons suck... Ex: Stock Chewblades.)

That would require BFE. With the exception of 123 and the Beetle Bros, almost nobody can do that well. I think we should go with the UHW BOTM.

That would require BFE. With the exception of 123 and the Beetle Bros, almost nobody can do that well.
Too bad nobody remembers the Trovaner Chassis Glitch from on the old forums[/sarcasm]. Although I'm still not very fond of the name, the glitch had its benefits. Here is a short description: (read it through to the end before attempting)
1. Check the rectangle chassis checkbox in 'Step 1' of the chassis creation menu.
2. Click the clear grid button
3. Make a new shape on the grid (but keep in mind that the first four points will move later)
4. Move one of the width or length sliders
5. Watch as the first four points (three if you made a triangle) move to their proper locations (point one goes to the upper right side of the rectangle, point two goes to the lower right side of the rectangle, point three goes to the lower left side of the rectangle,  point four goes to the upper left side of the triangle)
6. Move the scrollers around to make new shapes that would not have been possible otherwise (new rules: lines may not overlap, corners may not be angled more than a two to one ratio, you can't manually move anything if any of the lines are closer than 32 pixels (one box), and the last four points may move if you exit and come back to 'Step 1')


BTW, there are many more people that know how to effectively use BFE.


I would personally like to see a stock face spinner BOTM because it has not been done yet.

Hmm... I didn't try any of them in the garage until you just mentioned it. But it crashes the game. Odd. I will have to tinker with it some more tomorrow and see if I can make it stable.  Does the same for you huh?

Yea. Some designs are so unique they don't make it out of the 'structure(chassis) design', others won't work in the practice garage.  Causes Havok to misfire in a few synapses.
So you have to play around to get a both good, and working one.
 
 
Sage, I didn't notice, but did you post your nice tut vid on this?  Or was Trov going to do that....?

I'm going to do some thorough testing to make sure, but I think I found the little bump in the programming that allows for smaller havok constraints... meaning Trov . Glitch chassis will work in your exhibition matches and test garages. WIN.

Rock on! I did some more variables with chassis size and limits... most of my findings were not agreeable to DSL however.  Glad you got somewhere with your testing. :D

it just uses momentum

the robot hitting the Vlad forks lifts the front up

the robot smashes into the wall storm 2 style making the robot sitting on the flipper fly out of the arena.

I was actually thinking of someone (I can or serge.. or someone else) makes a custom motor or something that doesnt fit in well with common designs and you must use 4 of them or something on a DSL robot.

How about something like tag-team building?

For instance, one person builds the first half and another random person builds the second half.  It'd really be complicated but I've been thinking of ways to make it work.

-do a task,
-fetch an object,
-run a certain course,
-1 or 2 of the above?

I like mads Idea of a task... since we have done weight restrictions, type restrictions, selected parts to be used, themes, all before but never have a robot have to perform something

In response to a question asked by Joe, (He asked me about my suggestion of a "Railed Vehicle" BOTM in BOTM November 2010), I'll elaborate-

- "Railed Vehicle" refers to types of Train, including Steam, Diesel, Electric, or Rolling Stock (Coaches, Freight Cars)
- So for this one, people could compete to make a replica of one of those in RA2 DSL, from HW and up.
It'll probably be a test of component skinning and building a replica of quite well-known engines (IE. Flying Scotsman, Mallard, Rocket), but anything is allowed, as long as it runs on a railway.
- And component skinning? For example, a Toxic Waste barrel could be skinned into a boiler, hex plates and extenders could be used for buffers, and Grape Crates could become Cabs, for example.

The challenging thing about stock HW hs is that BECAUSE there are so many, the challenge in building an effective AND original one is that much higher. Thus, good BOTM. No one would really vote for a generic 36HS that's been built before.

err perhaps we should have an ART botm and a BUILD botm, switching off every other month.

ART botm would be basically what we have now, but with all emphasis on looks.

BUILD botm would have strict guidelines (paintjob must be done in game,nothing custom), no component skins, splash would feature just the default grey background with an inside shot, weight, outside shot from a different angle, battleshot or two, and a title. Would be evaluated on the quality of the build of the robot (messy/clean setup, combat effectiveness, originality). After winning this type of BOTM, the builder could have a few days to make a nice looking splash before it gets put on the front page.

we really need voting criteria for BTOM, for example:

Originality: Yes or No if it's an original design (3 points for yes, 0 for no)
Combat effectiveness: 1-3 (1 = stock standard, 2 = Starcore standard, 3 = PYS/Inf AI standard)
Skin: 1-3 (1 = rubbish, 2 = decent, 3 = great)
Splash: 1-3 (1 = rubbish, 2 = decent, 3 = great)

Total:  /12

BOTM is pretty broken nowadays anyway.. people look into things to much, pick and choose who they think built robots, etc (we are all guilty of it) Should really just simply be the first robot that jumps out to you..

I actually think allowing discussions is somewhat to blame... Other members are swaying undecided voters with comments.

Also I think maybe splashes should go for the voting portion of the competitions (but still nice a pretty look on the home page) but they are deciding outcomes..

My offer still stands to produce a generic splash that everyone just inserts a a few robot pics into is open.. I have a few ideas about how to go about doing it..

Then the winner submits a candy-fied splash for the home page..

However, I find this unfair. Splashes welcome new members into our forum, where the first thing they will see is the home page, including the BOTM winner. A plain splash would just draw people away.

I think a while back there was the idea of a default splash that people would use. It could be a reasonably shiny one, but everyone would be using it, so that would nullify any advantages that are gained from the splash being quite elaborate.

When you go to a car show... some people will admire the engine, some will admire the exterior.  Admiration does not have to be the same amongst everyone, so why change the way BOTM is done?

People keep Bawwww-ing because they think that a combat effective bot should always win.  I disagree, I think that a work of art like 123's reindeer deserves props as well. (and apparently many people agreed)

I say, don't permanently change the rules of BOTM.  I think that every now and then ACAMs should insert rules into the monthly requirements like:

-Bot must be Combat-worthy
-Single color background splash only
-etc etc etc

Mix things up sure.  But please don't permanently change the format.  I think that function and form are both admirable traits to bot building and deserve equal respect.

But Razor Tips are the only 7kg weapon, and I believe one of the lightest weapons (I'm talking about Stock here, btw, it's the only one I know). In order to have successfully created my lightweight for BOTM, I needed to use razor tips - I had no choice if it were to stay LW

I disagree with this, it actually is a great incentive to build ABSOLUTELY ANYTHING YOU WANT. Just take a look at the previous No Restrictions BOTM's we've had, one was won by a spaceship with laser guns on turrets, and another was won by a giant icicle-wielding snowman.

They don't come across as cluster<expletive>s if they're built well. Chances are if it's a random mish-mash of components it's going to be horrible in combat, and worse to look at. I'm struggling to come up with any way you could come up with "realistic" legged propulsion in RA2, short of chaining Linear Actuators. That might be havoky as anything. But I suppose it's worth a try.

Unfortunately true walkers can't move in RA2 due to the low friction of both components and the arena floors.  You can make a walker, but it can't push off the floor because there is no friction to push against.  The closest you can come to walking is a froglike 'hopping' motion.
 
Now, if you had a custom arena with a high-friction floor and custom high-friction components, that would be another story.  But of course, regular wheeled bots can't drive on high-friction floors.

maybe it is possible but it would be a box with sticks

I think I suggested a video game themed BotM before, and it prompted TRiaS to make a whole tournament out of it, but had to cancel it, sadly...

The rules said that you could pick any video game for your theme and only one person could use a game.

My bot was RA2: DSL themed. I was the first to find the loophole. :laughing

A game console BotM would definitely be interesting, in my opinion.

The only problem I can see would be the NES and PS2 bot spam, due to the ease of replication.

You have to keep in mind that most on here anymore come from the newer generations of gaming and think anything before Xbox 360 isn't worth messing with.

Plus the ones you mentioned are VERY obscure. Unless they are knowledgable of gaming history, they probably don't know what they are.

As an idea~

Robot has to look like a household appliances
And as an added twist, every bot can only have 2 wheels, and have part of its design dedicated to what it looks like, outside of paintjobs.
And then for a list of appliances you can do, just stuff like blenders, toasters, etc, just something that requires a lot of effort.

And then DSL, for added rage.

That's more or less what I meant. Basically if it is similar to an actual robot that has competed in any competition, it counts. That means that even some cheatbot components are allowed - there was a Robot Wars entry that was basically an RC airship with a net, so hover engines would work.

Just as a suggestion ACAMS, to prevent the delay between a winner being announced and the new criteria, would it be possible to add a new field on the entry form to signify your choice for next month's BOTM should you win? Just an idea I had earlier that could speed the process up.

Failing that, why not an extended deadline, or other incentives such as a badge system similar to RA2's kill points, which indicates how many BOTMs you've participated in.

The only flaw with this is people would have to remember when things were posted etc... it'd place too much on the voter, and I don't mean to sound awful, but people won't vote if there's effort involved :P

What do you guys want for November's BOTM?

The first 9 months were spent going through all three major weight classes for the three major versions of RA2 (with a few variations on versions). This month, we did a Halloween theme and December is traditionally a Christmas theme. That just leaves November...

You can just use the tool for BOTM on a normal bot. The internals aren't checked for a tournament. If you don't abuse ra2cf you won't get caught.

Considering that the next IRL BOTM has a wacky building rule, the less realistic BTOM should have an odd theme too. A few ideas

I think we should have themes for each month. Like next month could be animal themed, or maybe pride month themed. Some can be serious, and some can be comedic.

BOTM once used to have themes tbh. Then it got changed to the current system August ago
