Education Cuts
« on: December 01, 2010, 05:15:50 PM »
As anyone who lives in the UK will know, the government is planning to make university into a place where the only thing that matters is money, not talent or intelligence or anything a university is supposed to be for

As you can tell from that last sentence, im pretty peeved about this

Sounds like a good thing to me.  Depending on the major a person choose, college is either a financial investment, or a very expensive recreational activity.  All the other stuff about colleges are just illusions that lets them scam your money.

It's about time they recognize all that junk they taught in schools are recreational and does not prepare people for a job.  They need to stop forcing garbage like "moral and philosophy" or "art history" into the requirements.

Sorry i think i phrased that wrong
What i meant was the only thing that will matter is the money you have when you enter college/uni

In simple terms, the only thing that's changing is the fees trebling

What you say is true though

They need to stop forcing garbage like ... philosophy

I certainly hope you aren't saying that you think philosophy is garbage.
Any comments would be appreciated. :D

I second that comment... but "morals and philosophy" might be some propaganda rather than real philosophy, aka making your own point of view and your own decisions.

From my experience, philosophy is interesting up to the point where they have to shoehorn a bit in about christianity

Anyway, while these cuts don't really effect me, I do agree that these cuts haven't been done in the right places.

Yes I am saying that.  Just because something is "interesting" or "hold with high value historically" does not mean it is an employable skill.

I invest time and money for college so I can get a competitive edge.  I don't want to be force to take and pay for something my potential employers don't care about, when the opportunity cost is another job relevant course.  If I like philosophy I do it on my free time.

I will go one step further and claim that philosophy makes a person less employable in an entry level position.
