Due to having 7 entrants, one competitor will receive a bye. Rather than assign it randomly, a mini challenge was held to see who could kill the dummy bot (driven by me) the quickest. The best time automatically receives the bye and gets to skip the first round.

Most of these robots appear to be "front-loaded." I had an idea for some sloped armor that turned on a motor but never went through with building it, sorry. Hopefully, Mystic's robot does well because I've built similar designs in DSL.

Badnik, cringey, trackerzod and 8bean all did their qualifiers today. some results were... interesting 

once everyone plays their match I'll combine them all for the first video, then we'll get to the main bracket.

If you can call "getting to the semifinals with a noob bot because half the competitors dropped out due to scheduling issues, and then getting completely destroyed by a generic HS in my one and only fight, but not seeing what even really happened because lag had me jumping all over the arena and even winning at one point" experience, then I suppose I do.

Really hoping Parsec improves the online multiplayer experience.  I'm willing to give it a try.

Winning isn't the goal here so much as testing the waters for Parsec online play, and trying to build something "cool and hard to AI"... but I'm still pleased to see no one has a big VS (the one bot type my entry has no chance against).  Thrackerzod and freeziez do worry me though.

I wonder if running away and hoping your opponent pits themselves would be a valid strategy in this tournament?  It worked well enough for bud; only backfired once.

General comment: I'm really impressed with Parsec-based online play.  I had practically ZERO lag in this.  Parsec online is not going to replace AI tournaments (fight scheduling is still a challenge, especially on a large scale), but this removes the biggest obstacle.  Hope to see more like this in the future.  (I wonder though, is there any risk of sabotage if you let strangers push buttons on your keyboard?)

in theory yes. not much we can do about it unless one party uses a controller and one uses keyboard (the host can mutually exclude these) but many people don't have controllers and it's a bit tricky to get them going even so.

doesn't seem like there's much of a risk, but I guess you never know. I do know the host has the capability to instantly terminate all connections with a key command if needed.

Lightning v 8Bean:
Very tense.  When they were both up on the ring above the pit, I was sure someone was going to fall in.  Plus the cheeky one-wheeled pitting at the end - hope we don't see that again!

Freeziez v [cringy]:
Freeziez putting the flipper to good use.  Plus good speed, this is one to look out for.

Clickbeetle v Thrackerzod:
Welp, there's another one wheel pitting.  I realized over the course of the three rounds that if I just dived into Falling Star's face and spammed my spikes, I could knock off the ninja stars before he could remove my armor plate, so my strategy changed from "try to get around" to just "barrel into him and mash space".  Fun stuff!  Gotta be more careful about those pits though.

my thoughts:

lightning v 8bean:
i swear the clone matchup was total chance. really good fight though, i didn't know which way it was gonna go. it's constant twists like this that make even laggy pvp way more entertaining than ai. also fun fact 8bean's bot has about half the batteries it needs.

freeziez v cringey:
freeziez boyyyoooo your bot is possibly a tad too fast. good job controlling what you had to work with though. i feel like cringey is an accountant or something irl, he likes to be very sure about his move before he makes it.

clickbeetle v thrackerzod:
cb did a very good job working with what he had (mainly meaning no weapon). rolled with the punches real well, that's what you need to do. some people panic if something gets ripped off. there is still a losers bracket, keep an eye on him.
