New Robot combat game- in progress.
« on: October 26, 2009, 12:06:36 AM »
Ok, A buddy and I were toying around with the idea of creating a new robot combat game, and decided to use the bullet physics engine.

While doing research my buddy found an awesome thread over at the bullet forums:
http://bulletphysics.org/Bullet/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=3699&sid=9563bc5f810040f8b0528d7a39ff7e1b

Someone Has already started making a new robot combat game! Yes, its true. :)

in that thread there is a link to a small demo of what he has so far:
http://www.tomduggan.net/download/botapp0_1.zip

uploaded a mirror to gametechmods:
https://gametechmods.com/files/botapp0_1.zip
after unzipping rename "botapp.asdf" to "botapp.exe"

then lanch the game.

its really cool so far, if I do say so myself.

From what I have gathered:

-it is made with C++
-models are made in MilkShape (Free, unlike 3dsmax)
-made with the bullet physics engine(FREE), rated the third best physics engine today.

I am in the middle of contacting him right now. letting him know he has an entre comunity backing him.

So play, and let us know what you think.

Wow. If you could fuse RA2's ability to construct bots with that combat system, it would be incredible. That guy's amazing.

EDIT: The one flaw I did notice though is with the control scheme. Driving with one hand is difficult, and so is operating certain weapons. I hope that we get to see the finished product of this. It should be spectacular.

truly awesome, its the most realistic robot combat game and its the only non retail one :P much better then the robot wars games haha

shame we never got the source code for RA2 we could have combined the battle system :-D

Edit: ^^ yes the control system was a bit difficult one handed

This is an over-all working skeleton that could be fleshed out. A lot of the primal framework is done... hehe.

Nice features:
Quote
-it is made with C++
-models are made in MilkShape (Free, unlike 3dsmax)
-made with the bullet physics engine(Free), rated the third best physics engine today.

I went through the files and it looks well thought-out (and 'mod-able' too)...
AND.... the guy's asking for feedback to improve it.

Oh, and the 'controls' are no problem, guys...

Glad you're contacting this guy, Goose. Let us know what he says...
(I may join that forum....)

Coolness!

Input is appreciated. :)
-Arrogance is a quantity devoid of quality...
-As a client once told me "This is my story, and it's sticking to me!"
-Relationships these days are like the 'Arrival' section of the airport: a lot of baggage is being revealed in one place, and not a lot of it is being correlated to its real owners...

Ripping stuff up with Nightmare (once you've got the controls nailed) has never been so much fun.

some control adjustments, or at least the ability to do so, and more robots would be nice, but overall, a very nice game.

Nightmare is the best so far, the bots I want in the game are Razer or Warhead.

Not here. No slowdowns, heck, can say that the game runs too fast. A little.

If you close everything the game runs just as fast as RA2, maybe even better than it!

Mine only lagged in battles beetween Minion and Frenzy. Nightmare IMO is overpowered, if you can stay upright and pointed at the enemy, you will most likely win.

Best battle I had with Nightmare was that when I KOd Minion at 180 seconds of round time, thats half a second before it would have been a win by points :D
